Visualizationcomesfromusingthestored-upimagesofbutoneofour
senses,thesenseofsight.Idealization
comesfromusingthestored-upimagesnotonlyofthesenseofsightbut
ofallothersenses. To attainthatwhich
wedesireitisnecessary,notonly to seethevisualimage,but to act.
Trynowanotherprocess:Idealizethepaintingyousawintheartmuseum;
bringitvisually to your mind;re-see
itjustasyoudidbytheprocesspreviouslydescribed.Thenimage
action,-everypersoninitinaction;feelthem
doingthethingtheyarepicturedasdoing;feelthemovement;feelthe
activities.Ifitportraysthemasspeaking,
hearthetones,-hearwhattheysay.Imightcontinuewithallother

ifweidealizeaction,ifweusethe
mentalclutchofconnectinguptheidealofthethingdesiredwiththe

substanceofallothermaterialactualitiesarebut
theinfiniteenergy-spaceofGod,certainly your idealscomposedofthis
substance-theonlysubstancethatexists
-can and will and docometrue.Infact,thisethericenergy-space
substance,whichmakesmatterseem to be
dense,istheverysubstancethatgivesbodies to your ideals and thus
makesthemmanifestinmaterialactuality.
WHATATTRACTIVEMATTEROFENERGYGIVES TO YOUR DESIRES

Anotherstoneinthepathoffaith and theattainmentof your ideals and
desiresistheideathatmatterissolid.As

OBTAININGINREALITYTHEIDEALPOSITIONYOUDESIRE

exists,notonlyinthemental and spiritual
world,buteverythingthatreallyexistsinthematerialworld.
Ifyouthink and planinideas and actinaccordwiththem,becertain

of your mind.Thesubstanceofthereality
maynotyetbeyours. To makeityours,youmustmakethebodyof your
idealcoincidewiththebodyor
actualityofthatwhichyoudesire.

energy and place. To missnofactor,unify
stepbystep,-as to color,sound,taste,smell,balance,heat,movement,
directionofmovement,form,size,
finenessorroughness,hardnessorsoftness,cold,weight,use,pleasures
fromuse,etcetera.Missnoneofthese!

hisdesk?Didhewastethosefirstfive
minutes?Thisiswhathedid:

Takeanyideayouwish to cometrue.Imageitin your mindasitnowis,

Wishesarebutwishes;theyleadonly to wishingmorewishes.Desiresare
heartbeatsofsoul;theydemand and

come to makeitselftrue.Adesiregoes
outfromself;itdaringlyreachesout,demandingthethingdesired, and
divinelycreatesitinreality.
Putthefollowingtruthstogether:Desireistheheartof your ideal;in
thisheartarethefiresofattainment;
sometimestheydiedown and aredim;sometimestheyburnbrightly and
glowwithhope and setfire to action;
unlesstheythusburnwiththelightofhope and thefireofaction, your
idealwillnotcometrue.Whenthefires
ofdesirearedimmedbydisappointmentsordiscouragement,ormemoriesof
thefailuresofthepast,whatare
yougoing to doaboutit?Feedthefireswith your feelings and emotions!
Your thoughtswillnotdo;theyarebut
dampwood and wetsand.Desiresareoftheheart;theycannotbemade to
burnbrightlybyaddingideas and
thoughtsofthemind.
Isitathing-amaterialthing-youhavedesired and forwhichdesire
burnslowbecauseofpastfailures to attainit,
orisitanewdesirethatdaresnotburnbrightlyforfearof
disappointmentshoulditnotbeattained?Fire your
mayfallthrough.
Ifyouidealizethevalueofthatwhichyouwish to sell,yougiveit
additionalsellingvalue.Ifyouidealizethe
processofsellingit,youdiscovernewmeansofselling.Ifyouidealize

Ifinourgreaterknowledgeofmatterwefindthatitisonlyenergyin
reality,thatitisnotrestrictedenergybut
infiniteenergy, and thatitisofthesamesubstanceasspirit-thenour
conceptofmatterbecomessolikeour
conceptofthesubstanceofwhichidealsaremade,thatitispossible
forus to perceivesomedefiniteconnection
-arealrelation,perhapsasimilarity,perhapsevenaco-existence-of
thesubstanceofeveryideal and the
substanceofeverymaterialreality.
Withsuchknowledge-foundinnextsucceedingchapters-ourfaiththat
idealscometrue,becausetheyareofthe
samesubstanceasmatter,canbe and isjustified.Suchfaithwillfire
anewourideals and desires and impelus to
ceasenoeffortuntiltheybecomerealities; and withknowledgeofthe
processofattainment,weshallknowby
experiencethatitisnotsodifficultasitonceseemed. And you,
yourself,canmake your idealsbecomerealities.
Faithisthesubstanceofthingshopedfor.Idealsarethesubstanceof
thethingsthatare.
WHATCOMPACTNESSOFMATTERGIVES TO YOUR IDEALS

Your ideasarealwayschanging and youareeverchanging your attitude
regardingthem.Why?Theyhaveno
form,nobodyofspiritualsubstance;beingwithoutbody,theyare
notions and verychangeablenotions at that.
Butyouareloyal to your ideals;youaresteadfastin your allegiance to
them.Why?Becausethereissomething
fixed and realaboutthem;theyaremadeofspiritualsubstance;theyare
theactualbodiesof your desires;of
paperswerefullofthenewsystem and how to getfromonepoint to
another. At leastnineoutofeverytenofthe
millionsofadultsinNewYorkmusthavereadthedirectionsprevious to
theopening,althoughprobablynotone
inahundredthousand-whentheyreadthedirectionsover and overagain
-idealizedthenewroute,noridealized
themselvesgoingaboutthecityor to and fromworkonit.TheResultof
NotIdealizingtheProcessonthedayof
theopening,intelligentmen and womencrowded and jammedeachother,
wentwheretheydidnotwish to go,
evengotlost,thoughmanyofthemhadknownNewYorkalltheirlives.
Theconfusion and jammingofthemob
at twotransferstationsweresogreatthatscoresofwomenfainted, and
manywereseriouslyhurt.Morethana
millionpeoplelosttheirheads-morethanamillionwereconfusedfor
weeks.Itwasnecessary to closethecrosstown
subwayforamonth to preventaccidents-actually to preventpeople
killingthemselves and eachother,
becauseoftheirconfusedmobaction. And allofthisconfusion,trouble,
injury and delaycouldhavebeen
preventedifeachofthesevenmillionpeoplewhousethesubwayshad

route,ofwheretheywanted to go, and of

Your attituderelates to yourself, to others, to conditions, and to the

Consciouslyornot,youdotakesomekindofanattitudetowardyourself.
Youmaythinkyourselfawormora
god.Youarefree to takeanyattitudetowardyourselfyoudesire to
take;butthereisonlyoneattitudethatleads
to success and itistheidealizedattitude!Incompletethinkingin
“ideas”makesyouseeyourselfasachildofsin,
suffering,sorrow,weakness,mistake and failure.Thinkofyourselfas

Then,idealize your attitudetowardothers,"Thatwhichyeseekyeshall
find."Ifyouthinkthatallmenaretrying
to crushyou,youwillbecrushed;first,because your attitudecloses
your eyes to theopportunitiesofferedyou;
and second,becausesuchanattitudediscovers and draws to youthosewho

othersaswilling to helpyou,youdraw to youmen and womenwhowilldo

doesnotmakeyouatrustingsimpleton,for
theidealizedattitudealsoidealizeswisdominknowingothers.
Theidealizedattitudechangesalltheconditionsoflife.Inbusiness,
itleadsus to expectgoodresults, and,
expectinggoodresults,weplanbetter.Whenweplanbetter,-thatis,
in,amoreidealizedway-wegetbetter
results.Idealizetheworldingeneral.Theuniversemustbegood.Ifit
werenotgooditwouldgo to piecesover
night,-forevildisrupts and destroys.Goodattracts and unites and
holdstogether.
Youcannotidealize your business, your profession and your workwithout
conductingthewholeaffairasan
idealizedservicethatinevitablywillforce your ideals to cometrue!
YoumayidealizetheThingDesired,
down.Oneacrossthetable,onebesideme.LaterIlearnedthatonewasa
coaloperatorofIndiana, and theother,
-well,therestofthestoryconcernstheotherman.
Onelook at thismantoldmehewasnotaso-called“manofideals,”-
thatis,notinaccordwiththeordinaryuse
oftheterm.Helookedveryprosperous;hewastalkative-menarealways
morecommunicativeafterdinner,
smokingagoodcigar,onatrainwithnothingelse to do.Thismanisthe
soap-dyekingoftheworld.Onlyafew
yearsagohe and afriend,hiswife and hisfriend'swife,startedin
businessmakingsoap-dyes.Altogetherthey
had$800.Todayeachofthemismorethanamillionaire.Theirsoap-dyes
sellfortencentsapackage,yetthey
doabusinessofmanyhundredthousanddollarsamonth.Theysecuredthe
originalpatent and consequently,in
addition to theprofitstheymakefromtheirownconcern,theyarepaid
royaltiesbyallothersoap-dyecompanies.
How didhedoit?Ihavesaidthatheisnotamanofideals.That
statementisbothtrue and nottrue.Heisnota
manofidealsofthePhariseekind,butheisamanwhoidealizesthe
thingwithwhichheworks. To himthe
soap-dyeisoneofthegreatinventionsoftheage.Hisfaceglowedashe
toldaboutit;hiseyesshone.
"Thinkwhatitmeans,"hesaid,"foreverywomanintheland-infact,
allovertheworld,fornowwe'reselling
soap-dyes to Europe,Australia,India and Japan -to beableintwo
minutes to changethecolorofhershirtwaist,
ofapieceoflace,oranylighttrimmingmerelybydippingitinour
dye,withoutanyboiling, and without
stainingherhands."
Fromtheverybeginninghehadidealizedthethingheproduced.Hehad

idealoftheProcessyouintend to use to get to Boston.Ifyougo to
your garage and sitin your carforaday,a
monthorayear,holdingfaithfullyallthetime to theThingDesired and
holdingalsoamentalpictureofbeingin
Boston-mentallypicturingthefirst and thirdsteps,butomittingthe

failed to usethesecondactivity-thatofthe

to hunchmywholebodyupwardinorder to swingtheotherlegforward.

world and everyonewouldnowaccept and usethem.
WehaveidealsofGod,spirit, and spiritualhealing.Wehavenoidealof
matter,thething to behealed.Our
failureshavebeendue to ourpartial and verymistakenideasofmatter.
Somehavetried to getaroundmatterby
callingitanillusion.Thinkofmatterasanillusionasmuchasyou
pleasebut-ifyouhaveacancerontheendof
your nose-deepin your heartyouknowthatyoucannotdenythat your
mindrecognizesthatthatcanceristhere!
Solongasyoucallmatteranillusion,youadmitthereissomething to
becalledanillusion; and thatsomething
makesyoudoubt to onedegreeoranotherthepossibilityofthehealing.
Otherstry to getaroundmatter,by
denyingitsexistence.Solongasyoufinditnecessary to denymatter,
your verydenialis your admissionthat
thereissomething to deny.Isitconsistent to denytheexistenceofthe
matterwecallacancer and then to turn
ourmindstopsy-turvyinasecond and demandthatuniversalsupplybe
manifestedasmatterintheformof
money and meansofmaterialexistence-food,clothing,houses,etc.

Visualizingistheactofholdingamentalpicture;idealizingistheact
ofperfectingthementalimageofall
factors,-thepicture,theprocessofsecuringit and theactofmaking

Youoftenignitetheheartof your idealbyvividmentalpictures and
strongfeelingsofdesire to possessthe
reality;butunlessconnectedupwith your motorpowerofaction,it
remainsmerelyanurgentunfulfilledpicture
ofdesirewithinyou-anidealthatdoesnotbecomeareality.Clutching
your ideal to actioncannotbeeffectively
accomplishedbyapicture.Letmeillustratethisclearly.
Go to anartmuseum;look at anypaintingrepresentinganumberof
people.If,aftergoingaway,youclose your
eyes and visualizethepainting,youholdin your mindamentalpicture
ofthepainting.Withcare and practice
youcanmakethismentalpictureveryvivid and increase your ability to
re-seeinthemindeverydetailofsucha
painting-lines,forms and colorsofthings and people.Yet,itisstill
amerepicture;itisflat,lackingaction, and
itdoesnotimpel to action.ThatwhichIhavejustdescribedisthe
visualizingprocess.Visualizinghasproduced
marvelousresultswhenthepersonvisualizinghasturnedsuchmental
picture-makingintotheidealizedprocess,
eveniftheyhavenotrecognizedthattheyhavedoneso.
Idealizing,however,ismoreremarkablebecauseitincludesvisualizing
and addsallotherelements to it.
Visualizationcomesfromusingthestored-upimagesofbutoneofour
senses,thesenseofsight.Idealization
comesfromusingthestored-upimagesnotonlyofthesenseofsightbut
ofallothersenses. To attainthatwhich
wedesireitisnecessary,notonly to seethevisualimage,but to act.
Trynowanotherprocess:Idealizethepaintingyousawintheartmuseum;
bringitvisually to your mind;re-see
itjustasyoudidbytheprocesspreviouslydescribed.Thenimage
action,-everypersoninitinaction;feelthem
doingthethingtheyarepicturedasdoing;feelthemovement;feelthe
activities.Ifitportraysthemasspeaking,
hearthetones,-hearwhattheysay.Imightcontinuewithallother
elementsofthepicture,butIthinkthisis
sufficient to showyouthedifferencebetweenvisualization and
idealization.Visualizationproducesanonmoving,
non-activepictureinthemind,eventhoughitbevivid and clear.Being
non-active,itdoesnotimpel to
action and hencemanyofourpicturedidealsdonotbecomerealities.But
ifweidealizeaction,ifweusethe
mentalclutchofconnectinguptheidealofthethingdesiredwiththe
processofobtainingthatwhichwedesire,
actionmustresult; and actionisoneoftheessentialfactorsinmaking
anyidealcometrue.
theactuallandbycreatinganidealizeduseofit,avisionofalittle
parkamongthemillionaires-forforty
familieseachwithitsownlittlecountry home. Thefirstresultwas
accomplishedwithinforty-eighthours.The
planwaspresented to arealestatemaninNewYorkCity. At oncehe
wished to buytheentireplot at $300an
acre.Butthenephewshadseenavision-theidealizationhadgivenvalue
to theirland -and theyrefused.Thereal
estatemanoffered$400, and then$500anacreforit.

Whatthenisdensity?Densityisthespiritofmatter-theinfinite
ethericenergy-spaceofGod.Itisthatinwhich
allthingslive and move and havetheirbeing.Itexistsbetweenthe
infinitelysmallwhirlingelectronsbuta
billionthofaninchfromoneanother;itexistsbetweenwhirlingstars
and infinitelylargesunsthousandsof
millionsofmillionsofmilesapart.
Thereisnodensityofmatter to hinderthemanifestationof your ideals
and desires.Sinceyou, your ideals and
desiresareofGod, and sincethecellsof your body and alsothe
substanceofallothermaterialactualitiesarebut
theinfiniteenergy-spaceofGod,certainly your idealscomposedofthis
substance-theonlysubstancethatexists
-can and will and docometrue.Infact,thisethericenergy-space
substance,whichmakesmatterseem to be
dense,istheverysubstancethatgivesbodies to your ideals and thus
makesthemmanifestinmaterialactuality.
WHATATTRACTIVEMATTEROFENERGYGIVES TO YOUR DESIRES

Anotherstoneinthepathoffaith and theattainmentof your ideals and
desiresistheideathatmatterissolid.As
densitywasfound to bebutinfiniteenergyspace-thespiritual
substanceinwhichideals and allthingsexistwhat
willsolidityturnout to bewhenyoucome to knowitasitis?
Ironseems to beasolidsubstance and veryhard.Doesitshardness
resideinmatterorisitdue to thespiritor
energyofmatter?Themolecules and atomsofironarenoharderormore
solidthanthemolecules and atomsof
butter.Yet,itisdifficult to driveanailintoapieceofiron and
easy to driveoneintoachunkofbutter.That
whichmakesitdifficult to driveanailintoironisthedegreeof
attractiveforceexistingbetweentheparticles.It
isthisforcethatholdsmolecules and theirrespectiveatoms to each
other.Whenyoudriveanailintoiron,what
youovercomeistheattractiveforcethattries to preventthemolecules
beingpushedapart.Itis easy to force
apartthemoleculesofbutter to makespaceforanail.Inthiscase
also,whatyouovercomeistheattractiveforce
thatholdstogetherthemolecules and atomsofbutter.

thantwo and ahalfmonths,theownertried
IdealizingtheProcess.First,heidealizedthelandinallitsdetails.
And at onceanewthoughtcame:Ifthisland
isnotnowvaluableasaresidencesite,certainlythereareotheruses
forit; and sinceGodknowsalluses,the

Second,heidealizedthechangesinitscondition at differentseasonsof

thoughthehadnotthoughtbefore:Sincethelandwasinahollow and the
moistureofthesurroundingland
an“illusionofthemind,”youcould-knowingthecertaintyofthelaw
thatonlylikeperceiveslike-smile to
yourselfovertheideathatnothingbutanillusionarymindcould

islackofknowledgeofthetruenatureofmatterthatmakesusthinkof
itasdense,solid,motionless and lifeless.
Ifinourgreaterknowledgeofmatterwefindthatitisonlyenergyin
reality,thatitisnotrestrictedenergybut
infiniteenergy, and thatitisofthesamesubstanceasspirit-thenour
conceptofmatterbecomessolikeour
conceptofthesubstanceofwhichidealsaremade,thatitispossible
forus to perceivesomedefiniteconnection
-arealrelation,perhapsasimilarity,perhapsevenaco-existence-of
thesubstanceofeveryideal and the
substanceofeverymaterialreality.
Withsuchknowledge-foundinnextsucceedingchapters-ourfaiththat
idealscometrue,becausetheyareofthe
samesubstanceasmatter,canbe and isjustified.Suchfaithwillfire
anewourideals and desires and impelus to
ceasenoeffortuntiltheybecomerealities; and withknowledgeofthe
processofattainment,weshallknowby
experiencethatitisnotsodifficultasitonceseemed. And you,
yourself,canmake your idealsbecomerealities.
Faithisthesubstanceofthingshopedfor.Idealsarethesubstanceof
thethingsthatare.
WHATCOMPACTNESSOFMATTERGIVES TO YOUR IDEALS

Your ideasarealwayschanging and youareeverchanging your attitude
regardingthem.Why?Theyhaveno
form,nobodyofspiritualsubstance;beingwithoutbody,theyare
notions and verychangeablenotions at that.
Butyouareloyal to your ideals;youaresteadfastin your allegiance to
them.Why?Becausethereissomething
fixed and realaboutthem;theyaremadeofspiritualsubstance;theyare
theactualbodiesof your desires;of
paperswerefullofthenewsystem and how to getfromonepoint to
another. At leastnineoutofeverytenofthe
millionsofadultsinNewYorkmusthavereadthedirectionsprevious to
theopening,althoughprobablynotone
inahundredthousand-whentheyreadthedirectionsover and overagain
-idealizedthenewroute,noridealized
themselvesgoingaboutthecityor to and fromworkonit.TheResultof
NotIdealizingtheProcessonthedayof
theopening,intelligentmen and womencrowded and jammedeachother,
wentwheretheydidnotwish to go,
evengotlost,thoughmanyofthemhadknownNewYorkalltheirlives.
Theconfusion and jammingofthemob
at twotransferstationsweresogreatthatscoresofwomenfainted, and
manywereseriouslyhurt.Morethana
millionpeoplelosttheirheads-morethanamillionwereconfusedfor
weeks.Itwasnecessary to closethecrosstown
subwayforamonth to preventaccidents-actually to preventpeople
killingthemselves and eachother,
becauseoftheirconfusedmobaction. And allofthisconfusion,trouble,
injury and delaycouldhavebeen

soap-dyekingoftheworld.Onlyafew

businessmakingsoap-dyes.Altogetherthey
had$800.Todayeachofthemismorethanamillionaire.Theirsoap-dyes
sellfortencentsapackage,yetthey
doabusinessofmanyhundredthousanddollarsamonth.Theysecuredthe
originalpatent and consequently,in

ourmindstopsy-turvyinasecond and demandthatuniversalsupplybe

Go to anartmuseum;look at anypaintingrepresentinganumberof

eyes and visualizethepainting,youholdin your mindamentalpicture
ofthepainting.Withcare and practice
youcanmakethismentalpictureveryvivid and increase your ability to
re-seeinthemindeverydetailofsucha

Visualizationcomesfromusingthestored-upimagesofbutoneofour
senses,thesenseofsight.Idealization
comesfromusingthestored-upimagesnotonlyofthesenseofsightbut
ofallothersenses. To attainthatwhich
wedesireitisnecessary,notonly to seethevisualimage,but to act.
Trynowanotherprocess:Idealizethepaintingyousawintheartmuseum;
bringitvisually to your mind;re-see
itjustasyoudidbytheprocesspreviouslydescribed.Thenimage
action,-everypersoninitinaction;feelthem
doingthethingtheyarepicturedasdoing;feelthemovement;feelthe
activities.Ifitportraysthemasspeaking,
hearthetones,-hearwhattheysay.Imightcontinuewithallother
elementsofthepicture,butIthinkthisis
sufficient to showyouthedifferencebetweenvisualization and
idealization.Visualizationproducesanonmoving,
non-activepictureinthemind,eventhoughitbevivid and clear.Being
non-active,itdoesnotimpel to
action and hencemanyofourpicturedidealsdonotbecomerealities.But
ifweidealizeaction,ifweusethe
mentalclutchofconnectinguptheidealofthethingdesiredwiththe
processofobtainingthatwhichwedesire,
actionmustresult; and actionisoneoftheessentialfactorsinmaking
anyidealcometrue.
theactuallandbycreatinganidealizeduseofit,avisionofalittle
parkamongthemillionaires-forforty
familieseachwithitsownlittlecountry home. Thefirstresultwas
accomplishedwithinforty-eighthours.The
planwaspresented to arealestatemaninNewYorkCity. At oncehe
wished to buytheentireplot at $300an
acre.Butthenephewshadseenavision-theidealizationhadgivenvalue

purchasedinsmallplots,whiletheownersoftheestateswouldnot
considersellinganacreoreventenacresof
thelandtheyowned.Hencethisland,which-fourdaysbeforetheplan
wasconceivedbyidealization-as at the
tailoflandvalues,becametheleaderoflandvaluesincomparisonwith
farmlandvalue and thatofthegreat
estates.
Wheneveryouwish to increasethevalueofanythingyouhave to sell,add
mentaleffortbysaneidealizationthat
fitsthebestusethatcanbemadeofthething.Wheneveryouwish to
giveapredominantvalue to anything,
idealizeaplan and createadesireforitinsuchawaythatthething
youhave to sellleadsallotherthingsnearit
orapproximatelylikeit.
Thus,byactualpractice,youprovethatallvalueisofmind and thus

Thereisnodensityofmatter to hinderthemanifestationof your ideals
and desires.Sinceyou, your ideals and
desiresareofGod, and sincethecellsof your body and alsothe
substanceofallothermaterialactualitiesarebut
theinfiniteenergy-spaceofGod,certainly your idealscomposedofthis
substance-theonlysubstancethatexists
-can and will and docometrue.Infact,thisethericenergy-space
substance,whichmakesmatterseem to be
dense,istheverysubstancethatgivesbodies to your ideals and thus
makesthemmanifestinmaterialactuality.

desiresistheideathatmatterissolid.As

divinelycreatesitinreality.
Putthefollowingtruthstogether:Desireistheheartof your ideal;in

unlesstheythusburnwiththelightofhope and thefireofaction, your

ofdesirearedimmedbydisappointmentsordiscouragement,ormemoriesof

dampwood and wetsand.Desiresareoftheheart;theycannotbemade to
burnbrightlybyaddingideas and
thoughtsofthemind.

refused to cash;theywantedcertifiedchecks.Afterafailureofmore
thantwo and ahalfmonths,theownertried
IdealizingtheProcess.First,heidealizedthelandinallitsdetails.
And at onceanewthoughtcame:Ifthisland
isnotnowvaluableasaresidencesite,certainlythereareotheruses
forit; and sinceGodknowsalluses,the
ideaofanotherusewillcome to me.

thoughthehadnotthoughtbefore:Sincethelandwasinahollow and the
moistureofthesurroundingland
an“illusionofthemind,”youcould-knowingthecertaintyofthelaw
thatonlylikeperceiveslike-smile to
yourselfovertheideathatnothingbutanillusionarymindcould
conceiveanillusionaryworld,eatillusionary
vegetables,wearillusionaryshirts,handleillusionarymoney,use and

Iholdthatmatterisexistent and thatitisveryunwise and detrimental
to denyitsexistence and attempt to liveup
to thedenial,-forinstance to denytheexistenceofmaterialfood and
try to livewithoutit.But,Iholdalsothatit
islackofknowledgeofthetruenatureofmatterthatmakesusthinkof
itasdense,solid,motionless and lifeless.
Ifinourgreaterknowledgeofmatterwefindthatitisonlyenergyin
reality,thatitisnotrestrictedenergybut
infiniteenergy, and thatitisofthesamesubstanceasspirit-thenour
conceptofmatterbecomessolikeour
conceptofthesubstanceofwhichidealsaremade,thatitispossible
forus to perceivesomedefiniteconnection
-arealrelation,perhapsasimilarity,perhapsevenaco-existence-of
thesubstanceofeveryideal and the
substanceofeverymaterialreality.
Withsuchknowledge-foundinnextsucceedingchapters-ourfaiththat
idealscometrue,becausetheyareofthe
samesubstanceasmatter,canbe and isjustified.Suchfaithwillfire
anewourideals and desires and impelus to
ceasenoeffortuntiltheybecomerealities; and withknowledgeofthe
processofattainment,weshallknowby
experiencethatitisnotsodifficultasitonceseemed. And you,
yourself,canmake your idealsbecomerealities.
Faithisthesubstanceofthingshopedfor.Idealsarethesubstanceof
thethingsthatare.
WHATCOMPACTNESSOFMATTERGIVES TO YOUR IDEALS

Your ideasarealwayschanging and youareeverchanging your attitude
regardingthem.Why?Theyhaveno
form,nobodyofspiritualsubstance;beingwithoutbody,theyare
notions and verychangeablenotions at that.
Butyouareloyal to your ideals;youaresteadfastin your allegiance to
them.Why?Becausethereissomething
fixed and realaboutthem;theyaremadeofspiritualsubstance;theyare
theactualbodiesof your desires;of
paperswerefullofthenewsystem and how to getfromonepoint to
another. At leastnineoutofeverytenofthe
millionsofadultsinNewYorkmusthavereadthedirectionsprevious to
theopening,althoughprobablynotone
inahundredthousand-whentheyreadthedirectionsover and overagain
-idealizedthenewroute,noridealized
themselvesgoingaboutthecityor to and fromworkonit.TheResultof
NotIdealizingtheProcessonthedayof
theopening,intelligentmen and womencrowded and jammedeachother,
wentwheretheydidnotwish to go,
evengotlost,thoughmanyofthemhadknownNewYorkalltheirlives.
Theconfusion and jammingofthemob
at twotransferstationsweresogreatthatscoresofwomenfainted, and
manywereseriouslyhurt.Morethana
millionpeoplelosttheirheads-morethanamillionwereconfusedfor
weeks.Itwasnecessary to closethecrosstown
subwayforamonth to preventaccidents-actually to preventpeople
killingthemselves and eachother,
becauseoftheirconfusedmobaction. And allofthisconfusion,trouble,
injury and delaycouldhavebeen
preventedifeachofthesevenmillionpeoplewhousethesubwayshad
spentbutfiveminutesprevious to its
openinginIdealizingtheProcessoftravelingonit.

onthem.YeteveryindividualinNewYorkcouldhavedoneitinfive
minutesiftheyhadonlybeeninthehabit
ofIdealizingtheProcessofDoingThings.Othershadideasofthenew
route,ofwheretheywanted to go, and of
how to getthere.Iturnedmyideasintoideals.Idealizingtheprocess
ofdoingthething,includedmorethanthe
re-seeingofthementalpictureofthenewroute.Ididmorethan
visualizeit.Iputintoitanelementofaction.I

Your attituderelates to yourself, to others, to conditions, and to the

Consciouslyornot,youdotakesomekindofanattitudetowardyourself.
Youmaythinkyourselfawormora
god.Youarefree to takeanyattitudetowardyourselfyoudesire to
take;butthereisonlyoneattitudethatleads
to success and itistheidealizedattitude!Incompletethinkingin
“ideas”makesyouseeyourselfasachildofsin,
suffering,sorrow,weakness,mistake and failure.Thinkofyourselfas
youare:asonofGod-idealizingtheend
youdesire,theprocessbywhichyouattain, and theattitudeyouhold
towardyourself,others,conditions, and the
universeitself.
Then,idealize your attitudetowardothers,"Thatwhichyeseekyeshall
find."Ifyouthinkthatallmenaretrying
to crushyou,youwillbecrushed;first,because your attitudecloses
your eyes to theopportunitiesofferedyou;
and second,becausesuchanattitudediscovers and draws to youthosewho
donothelpyou.Ifyouidealize
othersaswilling to helpyou,youdraw to youmen and womenwhowilldo
thesquarethingbyyou and helpyou,
-inthemyouwillfindhelp and ajustreward.Thisidealizedattitude
doesnotmakeyouatrustingsimpleton,for
theidealizedattitudealsoidealizeswisdominknowingothers.
Theidealizedattitudechangesalltheconditionsoflife.Inbusiness,
itleadsus to expectgoodresults, and,
expectinggoodresults,weplanbetter.Whenweplanbetter,-thatis,
in,amoreidealizedway-wegetbetter
results.Idealizetheworldingeneral.Theuniversemustbegood.Ifit
werenotgooditwouldgo to piecesover
night,-forevildisrupts and destroys.Goodattracts and unites and
holdstogether.
Youcannotidealize your business, your profession and your workwithout
conductingthewholeaffairasan
idealizedservicethatinevitablywillforce your ideals to cometrue!
YoumayidealizetheThingDesired,
down.Oneacrossthetable,onebesideme.LaterIlearnedthatonewasa
coaloperatorofIndiana, and theother,
-well,therestofthestoryconcernstheotherman.
Onelook at thismantoldmehewasnotaso-called“manofideals,”-
thatis,notinaccordwiththeordinaryuse
oftheterm.Helookedveryprosperous;hewastalkative-menarealways
morecommunicativeafterdinner,
smokingagoodcigar,onatrainwithnothingelse to do.Thismanisthe
soap-dyekingoftheworld.Onlyafew
yearsagohe and afriend,hiswife and hisfriend'swife,startedin
businessmakingsoap-dyes.Altogetherthey
had$800.Todayeachofthemismorethanamillionaire.Theirsoap-dyes
sellfortencentsapackage,yetthey
doabusinessofmanyhundredthousanddollarsamonth.Theysecuredthe
originalpatent and consequently,in
addition to theprofitstheymakefromtheirownconcern,theyarepaid
royaltiesbyallothersoap-dyecompanies.
How didhedoit?Ihavesaidthatheisnotamanofideals.That
statementisbothtrue and nottrue.Heisnota
manofidealsofthePhariseekind,butheisamanwhoidealizesthe
thingwithwhichheworks. To himthe
soap-dyeisoneofthegreatinventionsoftheage.Hisfaceglowedashe
toldaboutit;hiseyesshone.
"Thinkwhatitmeans,"hesaid,"foreverywomanintheland-infact,
allovertheworld,fornowwe'reselling
soap-dyes to Europe,Australia,India and Japan -to beableintwo
minutes to changethecolorofhershirtwaist,
ofapieceoflace,oranylighttrimmingmerelybydippingitinour
dye,withoutanyboiling, and without
stainingherhands."
Fromtheverybeginninghehadidealizedthethingheproduced.Hehad

callingitanillusion.Thinkofmatterasanillusionasmuchasyou
