eyesandvisualizethepainting,youholdinyourmindamentalpicture

youcanmakethismentalpictureveryvividandincreaseyourability to
re-seeinthemindeverydetailofsucha
painting-lines,formsandcolorsofthingsandpeople.Yet,itisstill
amerepicture;itisflat,lackingaction,and

comesfromusingthestored-upimagesnotonlyofthesenseofsightbut
ofallothersenses. To attainthatwhich
wedesireitisnecessary,notonly to seethevisualimage,but to act.
Trynowanotherprocess:Idealizethepaintingyousawintheartmuseum;
bringitvisually to yourmind;re-see
itjustasyoudidbytheprocesspreviouslydescribed.Thenimage
action,-everypersoninitinaction;feelthem
doingthethingtheyarepicturedasdoing;feelthemovement;feelthe
activities.Ifitportraysthemasspeaking,
hearthetones,-hearwhattheysay.Imightcontinuewithallother
elementsofthepicture,butIthinkthisis
sufficient to showyouthedifferencebetweenvisualizationand
idealization.Visualizationproducesanonmoving,

substance,whichmakesmatterseem to be
dense,istheverysubstancethatgivesbodies to youridealsandthus

stepbystep,-as to color,sound,taste,smell,balance,heat,movement,
directionofmovement,form,size,

divinelycreatesitinreality.
Putthefollowingtruthstogether:Desireistheheartofyourideal;in

Ifinourgreaterknowledgeofmatterwefindthatitisonlyenergyin
reality,thatitisnotrestrictedenergybut
infiniteenergy,andthatitisofthesamesubstanceasspirit-thenour
conceptofmatterbecomessolikeour
conceptofthesubstanceofwhichidealsaremade,thatitispossible
forus to perceivesomedefiniteconnection
-arealrelation,perhapsasimilarity,perhapsevenaco-existence-of
thesubstanceofeveryidealandthe
substanceofeverymaterialreality.
Withsuchknowledge-foundinnextsucceedingchapters-ourfaiththat
idealscometrue,becausetheyareofthe
samesubstanceasmatter,canbeandisjustified.Suchfaithwillfire
anewouridealsanddesiresandimpelus to
ceasenoeffortuntiltheybecomerealities;andwithknowledgeofthe
processofattainment,weshallknowby
experiencethatitisnotsodifficultasitonceseemed.Andyou,
yourself,canmakeyouridealsbecomerealities.

Yourideasarealwayschangingandyouareeverchangingyourattitude

notionsandverychangeablenotionsatthat.

NotIdealizingtheProcess on thedayof
theopening,intelligentmenandwomencrowdedandjammedeachother,
wentwheretheydidnotwish to go,

Theconfusionandjammingofthemob
attwotransferstationsweresogreatthatscoresofwomenfainted,and

millionpeoplelosttheirheads-morethanamillionwereconfusedfor

subwayforamonth to preventaccidents-actually to preventpeople

youreyes to theopportunitiesofferedyou;
andsecond,becausesuchanattitudediscoversanddraws to youthosewho

othersaswilling to helpyou,youdraw to youmenandwomenwhowilldo
thesquarethingbyyouandhelpyou,

doesnotmakeyouatrustingsimpleton,for
theidealizedattitudealsoidealizeswisdominknowingothers.
Theidealizedattitudechangesalltheconditionsoflife.Inbusiness,
itleadsus to expectgoodresults,and,
expectinggoodresults,weplanbetter.Whenweplanbetter,-thatis,
in,amoreidealizedway-wegetbetter
results.Idealizetheworldingeneral.Theuniversemustbegood.Ifit

YoumayidealizetheThingDesired,
down.Oneacrossthetable,onebesideme.LaterIlearnedthatonewasa
coaloperatorofIndiana,andtheother,
-well,therestofthestoryconcernstheotherman.
Onelookatthismantoldmehewasnotaso-called“manofideals,”-
thatis,notinaccordwiththeordinaryuse
oftheterm.Helookedveryprosperous;hewastalkative-menarealways
morecommunicativeafterdinner,
smokingagoodcigar, on atrainwithnothingelse to do.Thismanisthe
soap-dyekingoftheworld.Onlyafew
yearsagoheandafriend,hiswifeandhisfriend'swife,startedin
businessmakingsoap-dyes.Altogetherthey
had$800.Todayeachofthemismorethanamillionaire.Theirsoap-dyes
sellfortencentsapackage,yetthey
doabusinessofmanyhundredthousanddollarsamonth.Theysecuredthe
originalpatentandconsequently,in
addition to theprofitstheymakefromtheirownconcern,theyarepaid
royaltiesbyallothersoap-dyecompanies.
How didhedoit?Ihavesaidthatheisnotamanofideals.That
statementisbothtrueandnottrue.Heisnota
manofidealsofthePhariseekind,butheisamanwhoidealizesthe
thingwithwhichheworks. To himthe
soap-dyeisoneofthegreatinventionsoftheage.Hisfaceglowedashe
toldaboutit;hiseyesshone.
"Thinkwhatitmeans,"hesaid,"foreverywomanintheland-infact,
allovertheworld,fornowwe'reselling
soap-dyes to Europe,Australia,IndiaandJapan -to beableintwo
minutes to changethecolorofhershirtwaist,
ofapieceoflace,oranylighttrimmingmerelybydippingitinour
dye,withoutanyboiling,andwithout
stainingherhands."

anddesire to bepresent,theidealof
theThingDesiredis to beinBoston.Ifyoudesire to driveby
automobilefromNewYork to Boston,thatisthe
idealoftheProcessyouintend to use to get to Boston.Ifyougo to
yourgarageandsitinyourcarforaday,a
monthorayear,holdingfaithfullyallthetime to theThingDesiredand

Youoftenignitetheheartofyouridealbyvividmentalpicturesand
strongfeelingsofdesire to possessthe
reality;butunlessconnectedupwithyourmotorpowerofaction,it
remainsmerelyanurgentunfulfilledpicture
ofdesirewithinyou-anidealthatdoesnotbecomeareality.Clutching
yourideal to actioncannotbeeffectively
accomplishedbyapicture.Letmeillustratethisclearly.
Go to anartmuseum;lookatanypaintingrepresentinganumberof
people.If,aftergoingaway,youcloseyour
eyesandvisualizethepainting,youholdinyourmindamentalpicture
ofthepainting.Withcareandpractice
youcanmakethismentalpictureveryvividandincreaseyourability to
re-seeinthemindeverydetailofsucha
painting-lines,formsandcolorsofthingsandpeople.Yet,itisstill
amerepicture;itisflat,lackingaction,and

comesfromusingthestored-upimagesnotonlyofthesenseofsightbut
ofallothersenses. To attainthatwhich
wedesireitisnecessary,notonly to seethevisualimage,but to act.
Trynowanotherprocess:Idealizethepaintingyousawintheartmuseum;
bringitvisually to yourmind;re-see
itjustasyoudidbytheprocesspreviouslydescribed.Thenimage
action,-everypersoninitinaction;feelthem
doingthethingtheyarepicturedasdoing;feelthemovement;feelthe
activities.Ifitportraysthemasspeaking,
hearthetones,-hearwhattheysay.Imightcontinuewithallother
elementsofthepicture,butIthinkthisis
sufficient to showyouthedifferencebetweenvisualizationand
idealization.Visualizationproducesanonmoving,
non-activepictureinthemind,eventhoughitbevividandclear.Being
non-active,itdoesnotimpel to
actionandhencemanyofourpicturedidealsdonotbecomerealities.But
ifweidealizeaction,ifweusethe
mentalclutchofconnectinguptheidealofthethingdesiredwiththe
processofobtainingthatwhichwedesire,
actionmustresult;andactionisoneoftheessentialfactorsinmaking
anyidealcometrue.

accomplishedwithinforty-eighthours.The

acre.Butthenephewshadseenavision-theidealizationhadgivenvalue

infiniteenergy,andthatitisofthesamesubstanceasspirit-thenour
conceptofmatterbecomessolikeour
conceptofthesubstanceofwhichidealsaremade,thatitispossible
forus to perceivesomedefiniteconnection
-arealrelation,perhapsasimilarity,perhapsevenaco-existence-of
thesubstanceofeveryidealandthe
substanceofeverymaterialreality.
Withsuchknowledge-foundinnextsucceedingchapters-ourfaiththat
idealscometrue,becausetheyareofthe
samesubstanceasmatter,canbeandisjustified.Suchfaithwillfire
anewouridealsanddesiresandimpelus to
ceasenoeffortuntiltheybecomerealities;andwithknowledgeofthe
processofattainment,weshallknowby
experiencethatitisnotsodifficultasitonceseemed.Andyou,
yourself,canmakeyouridealsbecomerealities.

Yourideasarealwayschangingandyouareeverchangingyourattitude
regardingthem.Why?Theyhaveno
form,nobodyofspiritualsubstance;beingwithoutbody,theyare
notionsandverychangeablenotionsatthat.
Butyouareloyal to yourideals;youaresteadfastinyourallegiance to
them.Why?Becausethereissomething

Consciouslyornot,youdotakesomekindofanattitudetowardyourself.
Youmaythinkyourselfawormora
god.Youarefree to takeanyattitudetowardyourselfyoudesire to
take;butthereisonlyoneattitudethatleads
to successanditistheidealizedattitude!Incompletethinkingin
“ideas”makesyouseeyourselfasachildofsin,
suffering,sorrow,weakness,mistakeandfailure.Thinkofyourselfas
youare:asonofGod-idealizingtheend
youdesire,theprocessbywhichyouattain,andtheattitudeyouhold
towardyourself,others,conditions,andthe
universeitself.
Then,idealizeyourattitudetowardothers,"Thatwhichyeseekyeshall
find."Ifyouthinkthatallmenaretrying
to crushyou,youwillbecrushed;first,becauseyourattitudecloses
youreyes to theopportunitiesofferedyou;
andsecond,becausesuchanattitudediscoversanddraws to youthosewho
donothelpyou.Ifyouidealize
othersaswilling to helpyou,youdraw to youmenandwomenwhowilldo
thesquarethingbyyouandhelpyou,
-inthemyouwillfindhelpandajustreward.Thisidealizedattitude
doesnotmakeyouatrustingsimpleton,for
theidealizedattitudealsoidealizeswisdominknowingothers.
Theidealizedattitudechangesalltheconditionsoflife.Inbusiness,
itleadsus to expectgoodresults,and,
expectinggoodresults,weplanbetter.Whenweplanbetter,-thatis,
in,amoreidealizedway-wegetbetter
results.Idealizetheworldingeneral.Theuniversemustbegood.Ifit

Youcannotidealizeyourbusiness,yourprofessionandyourworkwithout

YoumayidealizetheThingDesired,
down.Oneacrossthetable,onebesideme.LaterIlearnedthatonewasa
coaloperatorofIndiana,andtheother,
-well,therestofthestoryconcernstheotherman.
Onelookatthismantoldmehewasnotaso-called“manofideals,”-
thatis,notinaccordwiththeordinaryuse
oftheterm.Helookedveryprosperous;hewastalkative-menarealways
morecommunicativeafterdinner,
smokingagoodcigar, on atrainwithnothingelse to do.Thismanisthe
soap-dyekingoftheworld.Onlyafew
yearsagoheandafriend,hiswifeandhisfriend'swife,startedin
businessmakingsoap-dyes.Altogetherthey
had$800.Todayeachofthemismorethanamillionaire.Theirsoap-dyes
sellfortencentsapackage,yetthey
doabusinessofmanyhundredthousanddollarsamonth.Theysecuredthe
originalpatentandconsequently,in
addition to theprofitstheymakefromtheirownconcern,theyarepaid
royaltiesbyallothersoap-dyecompanies.
How didhedoit?Ihavesaidthatheisnotamanofideals.That
statementisbothtrueandnottrue.Heisnota
manofidealsofthePhariseekind,butheisamanwhoidealizesthe
thingwithwhichheworks. To himthe
soap-dyeisoneofthegreatinventionsoftheage.Hisfaceglowedashe
toldaboutit;hiseyesshone.
"Thinkwhatitmeans,"hesaid,"foreverywomanintheland-infact,
allovertheworld,fornowwe'reselling
soap-dyes to Europe,Australia,IndiaandJapan -to beableintwo
minutes to changethecolorofhershirtwaist,
ofapieceoflace,oranylighttrimmingmerelybydippingitinour
dye,withoutanyboiling,andwithout
stainingherhands."

whatyouwantandholdingfaithfully to the
idealformonthsandevenyearsbringsyouthesuccessyoureffortmerits
-evenafteryearsyouwillstillbe
holding to theideal.
And,ifyouidealizethatwhichyoudesireandattempt to takepossession
ofitmentally-usingthefirstandthird
ofthethreebasicactivities-yousucceedandjustlyinproportion to
whatyoudo.
If,wheninNewYork,youlearnofafootballgame to beplayedinBoston
anddesire to bepresent,theidealof
theThingDesiredis to beinBoston.Ifyoudesire to driveby
automobilefromNewYork to Boston,thatisthe
idealoftheProcessyouintend to use to get to Boston.Ifyougo to
yourgarageandsitinyourcarforaday,a
monthorayear,holdingfaithfullyallthetime to theThingDesiredand
holdingalsoamentalpictureofbeingin
Boston-mentallypicturingthefirstandthirdsteps,butomittingthe
secondone-beforetheyearpassesyour
friendswillwish to sendyou to themadhouse;andonlybecauseyou
failed to usethesecondactivity-thatofthe

thepowerofmindandspirit to changeit.Throughoutalltheages,
individualshavebeenhealedbyprayer,faith,
mind,loveandspirit.Eachsuchcaseprovesitcanbedone.Yettoday,
notonepersonofeachtwentymillionof
theworld'spopulationishealeddirectlybysuchmethods.Wecannot
accountforthis,byassertingthattheworld
doesnotknowthatGodhashealed.Wecannotaccountforitbyasserting
thatmillionsdonotwish to bemade
wellbyspiritualhealing.If,atanytimeduringtheages,wehadheld
to thetruththatGodisAllandknownthat
matterisspiritualmanifestation,theknowledgeoftheresultsofour
spiritualhealingwouldhavesweptthe
worldandeveryonewouldnowacceptandusethem.
WehaveidealsofGod,spirit,andspiritualhealing.Wehavenoidealof
matter,thething to behealed.Our
failureshavebeendue to ourpartialandverymistakenideasofmatter.
Somehavetried to getaroundmatterby
callingitanillusion.Thinkofmatterasanillusionasmuchasyou
pleasebut-ifyouhaveacancer on theendof
yournose-deepinyourheartyouknowthatyoucannotdenythatyour
mindrecognizesthatthatcanceristhere!
Solongasyoucallmatteranillusion,youadmitthereissomething to
becalledanillusion;andthatsomething
makesyoudoubt to onedegreeoranotherthepossibilityofthehealing.
Otherstry to getaroundmatter,by
denyingitsexistence.Solongasyoufinditnecessary to denymatter,
yourverydenialisyouradmissionthat
thereissomething to deny.Isitconsistent to denytheexistenceofthe
matterwecallacancerandthen to turn
ourmindstopsy-turvyinasecondanddemandthatuniversalsupplybe
manifestedasmatterintheformof
moneyandmeansofmaterialexistence-food,clothing,houses,etc.

Visualizingistheactofholdingamentalpicture;idealizingistheact
ofperfectingthementalimageofall
factors,-thepicture,theprocessofsecuringitandtheactofmaking

Youoftenignitetheheartofyouridealbyvividmentalpicturesand
strongfeelingsofdesire to possessthe
reality;butunlessconnectedupwithyourmotorpowerofaction,it
remainsmerelyanurgentunfulfilledpicture
ofdesirewithinyou-anidealthatdoesnotbecomeareality.Clutching
yourideal to actioncannotbeeffectively
accomplishedbyapicture.Letmeillustratethisclearly.
Go to anartmuseum;lookatanypaintingrepresentinganumberof
people.If,aftergoingaway,youcloseyour
eyesandvisualizethepainting,youholdinyourmindamentalpicture
ofthepainting.Withcareandpractice
youcanmakethismentalpictureveryvividandincreaseyourability to
re-seeinthemindeverydetailofsucha
painting-lines,formsandcolorsofthingsandpeople.Yet,itisstill
amerepicture;itisflat,lackingaction,and
itdoesnotimpel to action.ThatwhichIhavejustdescribedisthe
visualizingprocess.Visualizinghasproduced
marvelousresultswhenthepersonvisualizinghasturnedsuchmental
picture-makingintotheidealizedprocess,
eveniftheyhavenotrecognizedthattheyhavedoneso.
Idealizing,however,ismoreremarkablebecauseitincludesvisualizing
andaddsallotherelements to it.
Visualizationcomesfromusingthestored-upimagesofbutoneofour
senses,thesenseofsight.Idealization
comesfromusingthestored-upimagesnotonlyofthesenseofsightbut
ofallothersenses. To attainthatwhich
wedesireitisnecessary,notonly to seethevisualimage,but to act.
Trynowanotherprocess:Idealizethepaintingyousawintheartmuseum;
bringitvisually to yourmind;re-see
itjustasyoudidbytheprocesspreviouslydescribed.Thenimage
action,-everypersoninitinaction;feelthem
doingthethingtheyarepicturedasdoing;feelthemovement;feelthe
activities.Ifitportraysthemasspeaking,
hearthetones,-hearwhattheysay.Imightcontinuewithallother
elementsofthepicture,butIthinkthisis
sufficient to showyouthedifferencebetweenvisualizationand
idealization.Visualizationproducesanonmoving,
non-activepictureinthemind,eventhoughitbevividandclear.Being
non-active,itdoesnotimpel to
actionandhencemanyofourpicturedidealsdonotbecomerealities.But
ifweidealizeaction,ifweusethe
mentalclutchofconnectinguptheidealofthethingdesiredwiththe
processofobtainingthatwhichwedesire,
actionmustresult;andactionisoneoftheessentialfactorsinmaking
anyidealcometrue.
theactuallandbycreatinganidealizeduseofit,avisionofalittle
parkamongthemillionaires-forforty
familieseachwithitsownlittlecountryhome.Thefirstresultwas
accomplishedwithinforty-eighthours.The
planwaspresented to arealestatemaninNewYorkCity.Atoncehe
wished to buytheentireplotat$300an
acre.Butthenephewshadseenavision-theidealizationhadgivenvalue
to theirland-andtheyrefused.Thereal
estatemanoffered$400,andthen$500anacreforit.
Thesecondresultwasthatwithinfourdaysthenephewswereoffered
$1,000anacreforthefirstplotthatwas to
besold.Andwhy?Thelandwasexactlythesamelandithadbeenaweek
before,butvaluehadbeenaddedby
idealizingalittlecommunityoffortyculturedfamilieslivingneara
colonyofmillionaires,andvaluehadalso

purchasedinsmallplots,whiletheownersoftheestateswouldnot
considersellinganacreoreventenacresof
thelandtheyowned.Hencethisland,which-fourdaysbeforetheplan
wasconceivedbyidealization-asatthe
tailoflandvalues,becametheleaderoflandvaluesincomparisonwith
farmlandvalueandthatofthegreat

desiresareofGod,andsincethecellsofyourbodyandalsothe
substanceofallothermaterialactualitiesarebut
theinfiniteenergy-spaceofGod,certainlyyouridealscomposedofthis
substance-theonlysubstancethatexists
-canandwillanddocometrue.Infact,thisethericenergy-space
substance,whichmakesmatterseem to be
dense,istheverysubstancethatgivesbodies to youridealsandthus
makesthemmanifestinmaterialactuality.
WHATATTRACTIVEMATTEROFENERGYGIVES TO YOURDESIRES

Anotherstoneinthepathoffaithandtheattainmentofyouridealsand

thantwoandahalfmonths,theownertried
IdealizingtheProcess.First,heidealizedthelandinallitsdetails.

reality,thatitisnotrestrictedenergybut
infiniteenergy,andthatitisofthesamesubstanceasspirit-thenour
conceptofmatterbecomessolikeour
conceptofthesubstanceofwhichidealsaremade,thatitispossible
forus to perceivesomedefiniteconnection
-arealrelation,perhapsasimilarity,perhapsevenaco-existence-of
thesubstanceofeveryidealandthe
substanceofeverymaterialreality.
Withsuchknowledge-foundinnextsucceedingchapters-ourfaiththat
idealscometrue,becausetheyareofthe
samesubstanceasmatter,canbeandisjustified.Suchfaithwillfire
anewouridealsanddesiresandimpelus to
ceasenoeffortuntiltheybecomerealities;andwithknowledgeofthe
processofattainment,weshallknowby
experiencethatitisnotsodifficultasitonceseemed.Andyou,
yourself,canmakeyouridealsbecomerealities.
Faithisthesubstanceofthingshopedfor.Idealsarethesubstanceof
thethingsthatare.
WHATCOMPACTNESSOFMATTERGIVES TO YOURIDEALS

Yourideasarealwayschangingandyouareeverchangingyourattitude
regardingthem.Why?Theyhaveno
form,nobodyofspiritualsubstance;beingwithoutbody,theyare
notionsandverychangeablenotionsatthat.
Butyouareloyal to yourideals;youaresteadfastinyourallegiance to
them.Why?Becausethereissomething
fixedandrealaboutthem;theyaremadeofspiritualsubstance;theyare

NotIdealizingtheProcess on thedayof

Theconfusionandjammingofthemob
attwotransferstationsweresogreatthatscoresofwomenfainted,and

minutesiftheyhadonlybeeninthehabit
ofIdealizingtheProcessofDoingThings.Othershadideasofthenew
route,ofwheretheywanted to go,andof
how to getthere.Iturnedmyideasintoideals.Idealizingtheprocess
ofdoingthething,includedmorethanthe
re-seeingofthementalpictureofthenewroute.Ididmorethan
visualizeit.Iputintoitanelementofaction.I

Then,idealizeyourattitudetowardothers,"Thatwhichyeseekyeshall
find."Ifyouthinkthatallmenaretrying
to crushyou,youwillbecrushed;first,becauseyourattitudecloses
youreyes to theopportunitiesofferedyou;
andsecond,becausesuchanattitudediscoversanddraws to youthosewho
donothelpyou.Ifyouidealize
othersaswilling to helpyou,youdraw to youmenandwomenwhowilldo
thesquarethingbyyouandhelpyou,
-inthemyouwillfindhelpandajustreward.Thisidealizedattitude
doesnotmakeyouatrustingsimpleton,for
theidealizedattitudealsoidealizeswisdominknowingothers.
Theidealizedattitudechangesalltheconditionsoflife.Inbusiness,
itleadsus to expectgoodresults,and,
expectinggoodresults,weplanbetter.Whenweplanbetter,-thatis,
in,amoreidealizedway-wegetbetter
results.Idealizetheworldingeneral.Theuniversemustbegood.Ifit
werenotgooditwouldgo to piecesover
night,-forevildisruptsanddestroys.Goodattractsandunitesand
holdstogether.
Youcannotidealizeyourbusiness,yourprofessionandyourworkwithout

down.Oneacrossthetable,onebesideme.LaterIlearnedthatonewasa
coaloperatorofIndiana,andtheother,
-well,therestofthestoryconcernstheotherman.
Onelookatthismantoldmehewasnotaso-called“manofideals,”-
thatis,notinaccordwiththeordinaryuse
oftheterm.Helookedveryprosperous;hewastalkative-menarealways
morecommunicativeafterdinner,
smokingagoodcigar, on atrainwithnothingelse to do.Thismanisthe
soap-dyekingoftheworld.Onlyafew
yearsagoheandafriend,hiswifeandhisfriend'swife,startedin
businessmakingsoap-dyes.Altogetherthey
had$800.Todayeachofthemismorethanamillionaire.Theirsoap-dyes
sellfortencentsapackage,yetthey
doabusinessofmanyhundredthousanddollarsamonth.Theysecuredthe
originalpatentandconsequently,in
addition to theprofitstheymakefromtheirownconcern,theyarepaid
royaltiesbyallothersoap-dyecompanies.
How didhedoit?Ihavesaidthatheisnotamanofideals.That
statementisbothtrueandnottrue.Heisnota
manofidealsofthePhariseekind,butheisamanwhoidealizesthe
thingwithwhichheworks. To himthe

toldaboutit;hiseyesshone.
"Thinkwhatitmeans,"hesaid,"foreverywomanintheland-infact,
allovertheworld,fornowwe'reselling
soap-dyes to Europe,Australia,IndiaandJapan -to beableintwo
minutes to changethecolorofhershirtwaist,
ofapieceoflace,oranylighttrimmingmerelybydippingitinour
dye,withoutanyboiling,andwithout
stainingherhands."
