DBPartner License Management When you install any DBPartner component, you must also install licensing information. A temporary license gives users access to the product for a limited time period, allowing you to use the product on a trial basis; or, if you have already purchased the DBPartner component, to use it until you receive the permanent license sent separately by Compuware License Management. The permanent license gives you access to the product under the terms of your contract with Compuware. Compuware offers two types of permanent licenses. The type of license you choose depends upon the specific needs of your site. • Single User — If you only need one copy of DBPartner, a single-user license should meet your needs. This type of license allows the product to run on a single specified workstation. The product cannot be used on any other workstation. • Concurrent Users — If you have acquired DBPartner for multiple users, you need a concurrent-user license. This type of license is installed on a machine that acts as a server for any number of workstations that have access to it. You can install DBPartner on any number of workstations; the specified number of users on different workstations can use the product at the same time. If you have a concurrent-user license, you must have License Manager installed on the license server. License Manager is not required for using a single-user license. DBPartner License Management 2 Complete the following tasks to obtain, install, and configure the permanent DBPartner license. Concurrent-user license only: 1. If necessary, install or update License Manager on the license server (page 2). 2. If you install/update License Manager, configure it for automatic startup (page 4). Both single-user and concurrent-user license: 1. Determine the host name and host ID for the machine where the permanent license information will be installed (page 7). • Single-user: the workstation where DBPartner is installed. • Concurrent-user: the license server. 2. Obtain the permanent license from Compuware License Management (page 8). 3. Add the DBPartner license to an existing Compuware master license file, or create a master license file if one does not yet exist on the workstation (page 8). 4. If necessary, set the environment variable to include the license location (page 11). License Manager Concurrent-user licensing allows a specified number of users to connect to DBPartner at the same time, regardless of which workstations they are using. The license information is installed on a server, not on individual workstations; when a user logs in, the license information is read from the License Manager server. The License Manager server can be any computer that meets these two criteria: • Every workstation where DBPartner will be used is connected to it. • It is always running, and the Compuware License Manager application is always running on it (so that the license validation is always available). Before contacting Compuware for a permanent, concurrent-user license, you must select the machine on which to install Compuware License Manager. If License Manager is not installed on the machine you intend to use as the license server, complete the procedure on page 4. If License Manager is already installed, you may not need to re-install it; you can use the same copy of License Manager for multiple products. You should, however, update License Manager if the server is not running the latest version. Use the following procedure to find out whether you are running the latest version. DBPartner License Management 3 Verifying the License Manager Version Use the following procedure to determine the version. 1. Open a DOS window (Start menu > Programs > MS-DOS Prompt). 2. Use the cd command to change to the License Manager directory (generally, \Program Files\Compuware\License). 3. At the DOS prompt, enter lmutil lmver Lmgrd.exe . A message similar to the following displays the FLEXlm version number of License Manager: lmutil - Copyright (C) 1989-1997 Globetrotter Software, Inc. FLEXlm Copyright 1988-1996, Globetrotter Software, Inc. FLEXlm 5.12a (libmgr_s.a), Copyright (C) 1988, 1997 Globetrotter Software,Inc. 4. Insert the DBPartner CD in the CD-ROM drive. At the DOS prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive and again enter lmutil lmver Lmgrd.exe . If the version number returned from the server (step 3) is lower than on the CD-ROM (step 4), use the procedure on the next page to update License Manager. DBPartner License Management 4 Installing License Manager To install License Manager (first-time installation or update): 1. Use the appropriate method to start the utility. 2. Click License Management, then Install Compuware License Manager. The InstallShield Welcome screen appears. 3. Follow the prompts and instructions in the InstallShield screens to install License Manager. 4. After the installation is complete, the Setup Complete screen appears. • If you do not yet have the permanent license for DBPartner, clear the Install License option and click Finish. Continue with “Determine the Host Name and Host ID” on page 7. • If you do have the permanent license, select the Install License option and click Finish. The License Administration Utility opens. Continue with step “DBPartner License” on page 6. Configuring License Manager for Automatic Startup If the server on which License Manager is installed is restarted for any reason, License Manager must also be restarted. You can configure License Manager for automatic restart, to ensure that it is always available for license validation. If the server is running Windows 95/98, you can add License Manager to the shortcuts in the \Windows\Startup folder. If it is running Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, automatic restart should be set up as an NT service. NT service installation should be performed by a certified Windows NT Administrator. If License Manager is installed… If LIcense Manager is not installed… From the Windows Start menu, select Programs > Compuware > License Management > License Administration > Utility Insert the DBPartner installation CD-ROM in the drive. The setup.exe program should start automatically. If it does not: a. Select Run from the Start menu. The Run dialog box appears. b. In the Open field, type d:setup.exe, where d is the letter designating your CD-ROM drive. c. When the DemoShield screen appears, click License Management, then click Run License Administration Utility. Note DBPartner License Management 5 Windows 95/98 For Windows 95 and Windows 98, use this procedure to add License Manager to the programs that launch automatically when the server restarts. 1. In Windows Explorer, open the program directory for License Manager — generally \Program Files\Compuware\License. 2. In the right pane (inside the \License directory), right-click Lmgrd.exe, then select Copy from the popup menu. 3. Open the startup directory: \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. 4. Right-click in the right pane (inside the \Startup directory), and select Paste Shortcut from the popup menu. The Shortcut to Lmgrd.exe icon is added to the directory contents. 5. Right-click on this shortcut and select Properties from the popup menu. When the Shortcut to Lmgrd.exe Properties dialog box appears, select the Shortcut tab. 6. In the Run list at the bottom of the tab, select Minimized. 7. Click Apply, then click OK to close the dialog box. DBPartner License Management 6 Windows NT 4.x and 2000 For Windows NT 4.0 and 2000, use this procedure to add automatic restart as an NT service. 1. Open the file license.dat into a text editor (such as Windows Notepad). 2. Find the line that begins with DAEMON . (This line defines the valid license types.) For example, DAEMON compuware compuwar where compuwar (without the final e) is the executable that handles license management for Compuware products. You may have products from different vendors that all use License Manager for license validation. Only one copy of License Manager is needed for all products, but a separate daemon is provided for each different vendor. 3. Update the DAEMON line so that it contains the full path of the executable. For example: DAEMON compuware c:\Program Files\Compuware\License\compuwar.exe 4. Open a DOS window (Start menu > Programs > MS-DOS Prompt). 5. Use the cd command to change to the License Manager directory (generally, \Program Files\Compuware\License). 6. At the DOS prompt, type the following command as one line (where the line breaks below, type a space between -c and c:\ , and between -l and c:\ ). If License Manager is installed in a directory other than the default, type the full directory path instead of c: \Program Files\Compuware\License . If your master license file has a different name than license.dat , type the actual file name instead of license.dat . installs -e c:\Program Files\Compuware\License\Lmgrd.exe -c c:\Program Files\Compuware\License \license.dat -l c: \Program Files\Compuware\License \Lmgrd.log 7. License Manager now appears in the list of services. You can start it manually by selecting it from the services list. DBPartner License Each DBPartner license is created to work on a specific machine. It cannot be transferred to another machine. To obtain a permanent license, you must provide Compuware with the host name (for concurrent-user licenses only) and host ID of the machine on which you install the product (single-user license) or the License Manager and DBPartner license information (concurrent-user license). Note Note DBPartner License Management 7 Determine the Host Name and Host ID You must perform this task on the machine where you intend to install the DBPartner license information, and you must use the License Administration Utility as described. If you use any other method, the information you obtain may be incorrect. Use the License Administration Utility to obtain the host name and host ID that Compuware License Management needs to create the license. 1. Use the appropriate method to start the utility. 2. When the utility window appears, the field at the bottom of the window displays the host name and host ID for your machine. Figure 1. Host Name and ID Displayed in the LAU 3. Save the host information to a file: a. From the File menu, select Save. The Save As dialog box appears. b. The default filename, hostinfo.txt, is entered in the File name field. From the Save in list, select the directory in which you want to save the file, then click Save. Caution DBPartner License Management 8 Obtain the License To obtain the permanent license, e-mail the file hostinfo.txt to Compuware License Management at license_mgt@compuware.com. License Management will send you the permanent license information by e-mail, as a file attachment. Install the License Information The master file license.dat maintains the permanent license information for all your Compuware products, eliminating the need for multiple license files and the risk of license conflicts. If you already have other Compuware products installed, this file is installed in the directory \Program Files\Compuware\License. Use the License Administration Utility to add the DBPartner license information to license.dat, or to create the file in the \License directory if it does not exist. 1. Save the DBPartner license file, license.dat, to your workstation. Do not overwrite \Program Files\Compuware\License\license.dat with this new file. If you do, you will lose the license information for other Compuware products. 2. Use the appropriate method to start the License Administration Utility. The utility window appears. Figure 2. License Administrator Utility If License Manager is installed… If LIcense Manager is not installed… From the Windows Start menu, select Programs > Compuware > License Management > License Administration > Utility Insert the DBPartner installation CD-ROM in the drive.
