Expressing gratitude

AbstractThis thesis focuses on pragmatics and cross-communication by examining expressing gratitude by native speakers of English and Vietnamese learners of English. Specifically, it studies the use of forms of expressing gratitude. Participants are native speakers of English coming from the U.K, the U.S and Australia, and students majoring in English in universities in Vietnam. The data are collected via Discourse Completion Test (DTC), which is logically validated before it is used as the data collection instrument. Two questionnaires are used to collect data for this study. The first one is the Meta pragmatic Questionnaire, which is used to tap the subjects’ assessment of the relative power (P), social distance and ranking of imposition (R) of expressing gratitude. The reliability test is conducted on 45 English subjects and 45 Vietnamese subjects. Subjects within one culture are not identical in their ranking of the situations. The English native speakers and Vietnamese learners of English show different choices of the form of expressing gratitude in relation to the social variables. Pragmatic knowledge should be attended to greater detail in textbooks and in classroom activities. . examining expressing gratitude by native speakers of English and Vietnamese learners of English.
