friends and classmates for their supports and encouragement during my work INTRODUCTION Under the led by the Communist Party and the State, education always paid much attention to development and improvement quality MP has stressed that it is one of keys to help Vietnam have enough qualifies and skills to join the WTO, there are lots of challenges and opportunities ahead In fact Viet Nam’s education system hasn’t met social needs Therefore, with policies open door, there are alot of foreign investers come to Viet Nam to find oppotunities and KinderWorld is a big investor in educational area In our limited knowledge we offer scale and methods in learning and teaching practice in KinderWorld International School that aim to find comparations with thoughs between Vietnam schools and International schools We hope to recieve readers ideas then There are chapters in this report • Chapter one: Introduction to KinderWorld International School • Chapter two: Learning and teaching practices in KinderWorld International School • Chapter three: Remarks and Suggestions Chapter Introduction to KinderWorld International School 1.1 The importance of education The education is the process of instruction aimed at the all round development of individuals, providing the necessary tools and knowledge to understand and participate in day to day activities of today’s world It dispels ignorance and boosts moral values of individuals It is only wealth can not be robbed It builts characters, provides strength of mind and increases knowledge The education sustains the human values which contribute individual and collective well-being It forms the basis for lifelong learning and inspire confidence to face challenges It provides skills to individuals to become more selfreliant and aware of opportunities and rights It also enhances the abilities of individuals to manage health problem, improve nutrition and childcare and plan for the future The education not only impacts on human development and economic growth, also is the fundamantal requirement of democracy Through education people become more responsible and informed citizens, and have a voice in politics and society The education is the key which allows people to move up in the world, seek better jobs, and ultimately succed in their lives So education is very important, and no one should be deprived of it 1.2 Overview of Vietnam’s education Over the past few year, Vietnam’s educational system has improved in both scale and quality, that play an important role in the development of the economic and socienty Although Vietnam is considered a poor country with low per capita income and years in war, Vietnam has unceasingly recorded its great achievements in education Pre-primary education: Public kindergartens usually admit children of ages of 18 months to years Sometimes, four-or-five-year-old children are taught the alphabet and basic maths This level of education is popular only in major cities (Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Can Tho, Vung Tau etc.) Primary education: Children normally start primary education at the age of six Education at this level lasts for years and is compulsory for all children, which is why Viet Nam, albeit still a developing country, has very high literacy proportion, over 90% on average Intermediate education: Middle schools teach students from grade to To graduate, they have to pass the Intermediate Graduation Examination presented by the local Department of Education and Training (which was abolished in 2006) This educational level is generalized throughout most of the country except in very remote provinces, which expect to popularize and standardize middle education fully within the next few years Intermediate is also a non compulsory schooling form in Vietnam Secondary education: Most students manage to pass the IGE High school, which consists of grades 10, 11 and 12 is standardized in all major urban regions, but is not uniform in rural provinces At the end of grade 12, all students are required to write a leaving examination held by Province's education service The examination tests students of subjects including Mathematics, Vietnamese Literature, Foreign Language (mostly English), and other subjects determined by the Educational Board of Viet Nam The Educational Board of Viet Nam is planning to merge this examination with the university entrance exam in 2009 Higher education: University Entrance Examination is very important in Vietnamese students' lives High school graduates have to take it after the SGE and get high results to be admitted to universities The pressure on the candidates remains very high despite the measures that have been taken to reduce the heat around these exams, since securing a place in a public university is considered a major step towards a successful career for young people, especially those from rural areas or disadvantaged families In the year 2004, it was estimated that nearly million Vietnamese students took the UEE, but on average only out of candidates succeeded Normally, candidates take exams, each lasts 180 minutes for the fixed group of subjects they choose There are fixed groups of subjects: • Group A: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry; • Group B: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry; • Group C: Literature, History, Geography; • Group D: Literature, Foreign Language, Mathematics; Besides, there are also groups: H, M, N, R, T, V Most of Vietnam's universities also offer Master (2 years) and PhD (3 years) degrees In addition to universities, there are community colleges, art and technology institutes, professional secondary schools, and vocational schools which offers degrees/certificates from a-few-month to 2-year courses Private universities: According to Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training, there are currently 23 non-public universities, accounting for 11% of the total number of universities These non-public universities are currently training 119,464 students, or 11.7% of the total number of students The government is planning to increase the number of non-public universities to 30% by 2008 Foreign educational institutions are increasingly open in Vietnam Most of their fields are English language and information technology Vietnam is currently revisiting its education system It recognized the increasing role of English as the language of business and the importance of international cooperation to help adapt the education system, notoriously slow in change management, to the rapid pace of its economy 1.3 About KinderWorld International School The KinderWorld Group was founded in 1986 with first pre-school centre was opened in Singapore and to-date, the KinderWorld Group has grown Zealand and Mexico, as well as RMIT Vietnam In addition, students are able to sit for the GAC, the leading college entrance examination in the United States of America 27 Chapter Remarks and Suggestions 3.1 Advantages and disadvantages 3.1.1 Advantages Obviously children are studied at international schools, they are approached modern facitities and effective methods of learning Normally, in a classroom setting, the student tables are arranged in rows and the students have to be seated facing the teacher and the blackboard.Whatever the teacher, the students have to memorize it by heart Such traditional teaching methodology causes the students to be passive in learning Under such strict study environment, there are no opportunities for discussions and many students will be discouraged to post questions or voice out their opinions But in Singapore International School (SIS) , the learning environment is totally different The schools of SIS comprises of 25 classes, a staff room, an office, a music classroom, an art classroom and science laboratories etc The school has its own swimming pool, gym and assembly hall The school boasts of an enrolment 200 students from many different countries The school has the approval from the City’s Ministry of Education to provide education in three different languages: Vietnamese, English and Chinese In every class, there are visual and audio facilities It uses a lively environment for teaching Students are put in groups of to 6, with the tables arranged in circles, to discuss and study The aim of the school is to encourage the students to study, analyse knowledge, learn to respect one another 28 and to grow in team spirit Most importantly, it provides a conducive and enjoyable environment for studying and achieving effective learning SIS has types of programs, one is teaching the bi-lingual Vietnamese and English programs; the other educational program uses an international program that teaches languages In the latter program, Chinese is a compulsory subject, and it has the most number of students enrolled in this program (approximately 120 students, with 20% coming from Chinese families) The school combines the strength of the East and West educational systems to educate their students Their teachers are employed from various countries like Australia, America, New Zealand, Philippines, China and Vietnam The country origin of the student is not a concern for the school As long as the student has studied in this school for more than months, he/she will be able to listen and speak in English The school utilizes an “Smart Educational” program, which promotes an English environment, including games, activities and interaction with the teachers (each ex-patriate teacher is assisted with a Vietnamese co-teacher) As such, this program accelerates the learning process of a foreign language and students are able to learn effectively Upon completing their Grade education, students are able to apply for entry into Singapore secondary schools, through the iPSLE exam which is recognized by all Singapore institutes One advantage of the KinderWorld Group of International Schools is that with campuses all over Vietnam like Ho Chi Minh City, BinhDuong, VungTau, Hanoi, Hai Phong, Danang and Hue, students moving from cities to cities can continue their education in KinderWorld and expect the same quality of education among the campuses Parents’ work circumstances will not have their children’s studies interrupted as they can continue their education program when studying at it’s schools in other provinces Specially developed for Vietnamese students, the Integrated program combines with Vietnamese education, retaining the core subjects required by the Vietnamese 29 MOET Vietnamese students will be taught by qualified expatriate teachers in some key learning areas of the International program The students will also have the chance to join outdoor activities in an English speaking and multi-cultural environment Further, students have the option of taking Chinese as a Foreign Language Finally, studying in Vietnam public schools which is facing several crises such as out-of-date course curricula, a lecturer-centered method of teaching and learning, research activities separated from teaching activities, a big gap between theory and practice that leads to a large number of graduates being unable to find a job, and the fact that degrees from Vietnamese universities are not recognized worldwide So studying in private schools which have good qualifies such as Kinderworld international school is to be a good choice for rich Vietnamese people 3.1.2 Disadvantages Kinder World has entered Vietnam for years now 65% of the ages of the teachers are below 35 and the government has adopted the education for all policy recently The vision of the school is to be a life long learning institution KinderWorld provides education from kindergarten, all the way to college The reason company chose to set up their education centers in Vietnam is because of the availability of manpower and the cost of the manpower is much cheaper in Vietnam The top priorities of the government now are to improve the infrastructure of Vietnam and also to improve the education system Kinder World aimed at the richer Vietnamese and the expatriates It teachs everything in the international language, English However there are some disadvantages 2.1.2.1 School Fee 30 The school fee is relatively high International and local programs are taught together in Kinderworld, that have different fee For International program: - International program in Pre-Nursery : 1.500 usd / a term - Full of year in International program in Pre-Nursery: 6.000 USD (approximated 100 millions Vietnam dong) - Uniform: 200 usd - Transport: 500USD For Local program: - Local program in Pre- Nursery: 720 usd/ a term - Full of year in Pre- Nursery: 2.889 USD ( approximated 47 millions Vietnam dong) - Uniform: 200 USD - Transport: 360 USD Only difference between Local and International program that is International program is taught by foreign teachers and Local program is taught by Vietnamese teachers Moreover, if parents want their children to learn extra another subjects like music, art or language, they have to pay extra money ( of course it’s not cheap for a course) Because of that, the school fee for a course is very expensive, that compares with other schools in Vietnam 3.1.2.2 Timescale The timescale is from 8.30am to 3.30pm for studing, that is not convenient for parents to pick their children to go to school and go home Although teachers are pleased to look after the childrent whenever parents want but it belongs together a condition, parents have to pay a high money for afterschool fee (5usd/ a day or 20 usd/a week) 31 3.2 Remarks and Suggestions The diversity of educational market between Vietnamese Non- publich school, Publich school and International schools that give parents alot of choice to invest in education for their children In fact, the average monthly salary of Vietnamese people in big cities is between 100USD to 160USD /a month that is not enough to help their childrent to study in international schools, so it’s only for rich families in Vietnam However, truthfully, the studying not only in KinderWorld schools but other International schools in general, the kids learn fast and more confident than other kids they were also all getting along well with each other though they are of different races and from different countries They have a more integrated way of learning like the teacher can be teaching English and science at the same time The kids are also really active in learning The Singapore education system influences Vietnam greatly Vietnam has been putting in great efforts into improving its education systems by allowing foreign investments on education in Vietnam Kinder World International school is one of the schools set up in Vietnam to allow international students as well as local Vietnamese to study in As mentioned, Vietnam has a young population aged below 26 years, thus its good that the younger generations are educated so that the future generation will have a better understanding and knowledge on the importance of education In my personal view, if Kinderworld international school give some changes to make school fees lower, timescale more suitable, it will be completely an effective and succeeful model in Vietnam educational market./
