POST-READING Suggested ideas A traditional Vietnamese family - There are a lot of children in the family - Parents often decide who their chikdren will marry - Wives never decide tio do things in the family without asking their husbands’ opinions. Men often achieve a dominant position in the family. The father is the head of the household who presents authority and makes all the important decisions. His wife is reponsilible for tehdomestic side of family life. - Men rarely cook meals in the kitchen. Cooking is considered women’s task. A modern Vietnamese family - There are only two children intehfamily - Parents let their children decide whom they will marry - Both the father and the mother work to earn the living - The mother takes care of the housework and the children with the help of the father - The father can look after his children and help in the house, even his wife doesn’t go out to work. ACTIVITY 2: Discussion Work in pairs: Discuss and find out the corresponding features of Vietnamese culture In America In Vietnam + Two generations (parents and children ) live in a home. + Old-aged parents live in nursing homes. + It is not polite to ask questions about age, marriage and incoem. + Ameticans can greet anyone in the family first. + Groceries are bought once a week. + Christmas and New Year holidays are the most important + Children sleep in their own bedrooms + Three or sometimes four generations live under the same roof. + Elders live with children and are taken care by their son, daughters- in-law or daughters. + Asking age,marriage and salary are acceptable. + A Vietnamese greets the head of the family or an older person first, then the young ones. + Tet is the most important + The vietnamese celenrate dead days. They prepare meal and often invite tehir relatives and friends to get together and talk about good respect of the dead person. + Young children often sleep with their parents. ACTIVITY 3: Discussion Take turn talking about the similarities and the differences between the Vietnamese and American cultures Suggested answers Differences: American culture: - Most of the Americans are individualists. - People always ask if it’s OK when they want to smoke - People often kiss friends on the cheek when they meet to express friendliness. - Young people usualy live in their own houses or flats after marriage. - Teenagers go out on dates a lot. 6 Express the point of view upon the sentences on the chart Work in groups + Each group has a poster and a board marker + Sts present in front of the class + T goes around to control and give some help if necessary + If sts have mistakes, T corrects for sts later. + T invites representatives from the groups to report their ideas to the class + T calls on some Ss to present their ideas. + T gives feedback and comments. - Asking someone about his/her age / marriage is considered to be impolite. - People live in nuclear family. Similarities - America and Vietnamese are multi-culture countries - Both Americans and Vietnamese are friendly, hospitable, and hard-working people who always proud of their countries - They both hate war and love peace - They like doing charity work.
