convincing interpretation FOREWORD Translation and interpretation requires many qualities and skills For translators, some skills needed are information analyzing, extensive knowledge and vocabulary competence Meanwhile, such skills as good listening, good memory, and quick response are prerequisite for an interpreter Obviously, there is always a gap between translation study at academy and translation profession TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION ASSIGNMENT Page Therefore, this assigment is carried out in order to facilitate the English Majors, especially those who desire to become professional translators/ interpreters, and to pinpoint the gap between academic theory and practical situations Through this, strategies for translation and interpretation will be discovered, which enables students to success in their future careers as translators/interpreters Regarding to research methodology, in the part of translation , the focus will be on analyzing source language on the base of specific context, discovering some difficulties and challenges in translating process, and converting the source language to targeted language For interpretation part, after listening the speeches, analysist of the sentences and grammar, speech delivery and so on, will be conducted to point out difficulties and challeges in interpretation Finally, the suggested translation and sinh TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION ASSIGNMENT Page Source text: 17 March 2010, Ha Noi – Viet Nam’s population is expected to increase during the coming decade (2011-2020) due to population momentum, even though Viet Nam has experienced a decrease in the total fertility rate The continued population growth is the legacy of earlier years of high fertility rates and cannot be avoided, experts said at a workshop organized by the Ministry of Health (MOH) in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on March 2nd to discuss population issues to be addressed in Viet Nam’s new National Population and Reproductive Health Strategy Entitled “Population dynamics and their impact on Vietnamese society: Learning from regional experiences”, the seminar provided participants from line ministries, international organizations and civil society organizations with information on how other countries have dealt with population issues similar to those that Viet Nam is currently facing Even when the total fertility drops below replacement level, as has already happened in Viet Nam, the absolute number of people will continue to increase until members of the early baby boom generation pass through their reproductive years This phenomenon is known as a “demographic bonus”, a period in which there will be two or more persons of working age for every person of dependant age “This favorable demographic characteristic has contributed more than one-third of East Asia’s economic miracle”, said Professor Gavin Jones of the University of Singapore at the workshop “However, a window of opportunity can turn into a disaster if large numbers of half-trained young people are turned out into a labor market unable to absorb them This can be a recipe for dissatisfaction or, if utilized wisely, the potential for rapid economic development is certainly there” According to Adrian C Hayes, from the Australian National University, population growth trends point at the need to develop flexible policies to a maintain national fertility rate close to replacement level “This is an issue to be reflected in the new strategy”, he said This idea was reinforced by Professor Jones, who explained that a too rapid decline in the total fertility rate (TFR) to very low levels will result in rapid ageing and decline in the working age population – as has happened in Japan “Policy lessons from the East Asian experience show the need to relax anti-natalist policies even before the TFR falls to 2.1, which is the case of Viet Nam,” Jones explained Therefore, while taking advantage of the demographic bonus, Viet Nam has to be well prepared for the ageing of its population “The Population and Reproductive Health Strategy should include a description of the challenges brought by Across Asia countries have experienced an increase in the child sex ratio from 100-105 to 110-130 male births for every 100 female births over the last four decades In Viet Nam the SRB reached 110.6 according to the 2009 Census, indicating a gradual masculinization of population structures “Son preference, new prenatal technology and low fertility are the main causes behind the excess SRB in the country,” the expert from the University of Singapore said Regarding the emphasis given in the strategy to improving Viet Nam’s “population quality”, Adrian C Hayes said that it is important to define this concept as “capabilities”, and clarify its application in the present context “The strategy has to specify how to contribute to on-going improvements in educational attainment while contributing to reducing disparities among population groups and by gender In addition, it should contribute to on-going improvements in health, especially sexual and reproductive health,” Hayes said The issue of reproductive health was addressed by Saramma Thomas Mathai, UNFPA Regional coordinator and Advisor on Maternal Health, who said that good reproductive health care can contribute to reducing maternal deaths, as well as HIV and reproductive tract infections – which in turn will help the country to achieve Millennium Development Goals “Lessons learnt from the region show that the introduction of a comprehensive package of services with focus on the poor is critical for effective maternal mortality reduction This includes the professionalization of midwifery, monitoring systems and advocacy, improved access to rural and disadvantaged and community mobilization, as well as improved utilization through continuum care, quality and client empowerment”, Saramma explained “The opinions shared in this workshop will help Viet Nam to avoid the mistakes related to population issues made by other countries in the region”, concluded Bruce Campbell, UNFPA Representative in Viet Nam In his closing remarks, Duong Quoc Trong, General Director of the General Office for Population and Family Planning of the MOH highlighted the fact that Viet Nam’s Population and Reproductive Health Strategy is not the ministry’s strategy, but rather the strategy of all stakeholders since it is the result of a consultative process Trong indicated that as a next step the task force created to develop the document
