Latvijas Entomolo ijas biedr ba Entomological Society of Latvia ! "# $ $ % ISBN 9984-9768-0-7 ISBN 9984-9768-1-5 „Check-List of Latvian Beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera)” INTRODUCTION Dear BEETLEman, Seven years have passed since the first complete list of Coleoptera recorded from Latvia was published (Telnov D., A.Barsevskis, F.Savich, F.Kovalevsky, S.Berdnikov, M.Doronin, R.Cibulskis, D.Ratniece, 1997 Check-List of Latvian Beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera) Mitteilungen des Internationalen Entomologischen Vereins, Supplementum 5: 1-141) As is typical in entomology, many systematic changes have been made since that time, and many beetles new to the Latvian fauna have been discovered So, it’s time for a second edition of the “Check-List of Latvian Beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera)”! The present work begins a new ongoing series of publications on Latvian Coleoptera, which I have called the “Compendium of Latvian Coleoptera” This series aims to introduce the Latvian beetle fauna, to compile all known data and to make them accessible to coleopterists and other interested people After this List, the next volumes planned are “Bibliography on Latvian Beetles”, several parts of “Ecology of Latvian Beetles”, and, finally, “Distribution Maps of Latvian Beetles” Many Coleopterists from Latvia and all over Europe have made contributions to this issue I am highly indebted to all my friends and colleagues listed below in the chapters “Number of Coleoptera species according to families” & “Acknowledgements” for their support! The Coleoptera of Latvia have been studied for more than 225 years, since 1778 The current check-list is based on a revision of all known published records of Latvian Coleoptera, as well as examination of major historical and recent collections stored in Latvia and all over Europe These collections include those of Seidlitz, Gimmerthal, Spuris, Šmits, Lackschewitz, Mikutowicz, Brammanis and numerous others In total, more than 400 bibliographical sources have been consulted In total, 105 families and 3434 species of Coleoptera have been confirmed for the Latvian fauna as of May 2004 Of course, this is not the final number, and we would predict the occurrence of ~4000 species of Coleoptera in Latvia To compare: there are ~3000 species recorded from Estonia, ~2800 from Lithuania, ~3650 from Finland and ~4450 from Sweden Like any faunal monograph, this check-list is not constant, and will be updated continuously as the group' s systematics advances Hence, I am open to any comments, addenda and corrections DMITRY TELNOV Chairman of Coleopterology The Entomological Society of Latvia R ga, 2004.28.05 ÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷ CHOROTYPES OF LATVIA In Latvia, several species of Coleoptera and other invertebrates reach the southernmost, northernmost, westernmost or easternmost extremes of their distributional area The geographical position of Latvia on the borders of the boreal and broad-leaved forest zones on one side, and the forest and forest-steppe zones on the other, have made an excellent background for high beetle species diversity Except the large, sometimes “transcontinental” chorotypes, like the Holarctic (incl circumpolar & boreomontane), Palaearctic (incl North African-Eurasian, Eurasian), W Palaearctic, Asiatic-European, Sibero-European, and European chorotypes, the territory of Latvia includes the following other smaller chorotypes: Europeo-Mediterranean, N European, Central European, E European, Europeo-Caucasian, Europeo-British, Siberian-Baltic, and finally the Baltic chorotype ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I sincerely acknowledge all the authors of the first issue of this check-list, namely A.Barševskis (Daugavpils, Latvia), S.Berdnikov (R ga, Latvia), R.Cibu skis (Daugavpils), M.Doronin (R ga), F.Kovalevsky (R ga), D.Ratniece (Saulkrasti, Latvia) and F.Savich (R ga), who have all contributed their data towards the second edition My thanks to many of my colleagues from around the World I sincerely thank everyone who helped me during the preparation of the current list, including M.A.Alonso-Zarazaga, F.Angelini, R.Angus, V.Assing, B.Büche, M.Danilevsky, L.Erbeling, R.Frieser, F.Fritzlar, M.Geisthardt, R.Gerstmeier, M.Gigli, M.Hartmann, J.Háva, F.Hebauer, M.Jäch, children Alisa and Edwin for their assistance during the preparation of this work, and for the supportive atmosphere of the family „Check-List of Latvian Beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera)” LEGENDS Taxa above the species-level are listed in accordance with their actual taxonomy, but species, subspecies and synonyms are ordered alphabetically Names from suborder to tribe level are in bold, names of genera in bold italic, and those of species and subspecies are in italic Synonyms are listed It was not my intention to include the complete synonymy of all species, and it was left to the discretion of the compilers and consultants for each family which synonyms to include Synonyms of adephagous Coleoptera are mostly taken from the „Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera”, vol 1: Archostemata-Myxophaga-Adephaga Stenstrup, Apollo Books, pp 1-819 (eds I.Löbl, A.Smetana, 2003), but with some addenda and corrections Names that are unavailable according the ICZN (2000) are not listed Some Carabidae species mentioned for Latvia for the first time in vol of the Palaearctic Beetle catalogue, without further locality data, have not been included in to this check-list Several species are marked with a dash „ ” in the list These are Coleopteran species mentioned (published) for the Latvian fauna, but which not appear to occur here, and it is doubtful whether they ever occurred in Latvia Some causes of such “dubious records” may include: misidentifications; species recorded for „Livland” (or Livonia) with no precise locality The southern part of the former Livland now belongs to Latvia, but the northern one is part of Estonia If such species have not been recorded from the territory of Latvia since that time, such species cannot be reliably assigned to the Latvian fauna; unsuccessful introductions (especially some species of Carabus L) Compendium of Latvian Coleoptera, I NUMBER OF COLEOPTERA SPECIES ACCORDING TO FAMILIES Nr Family 10 11 12 13 14 15 16
