the high percentage of second year English-majored students in HUCFL had to repeat the listening course each semester The purpose of this was to discover problems in English listening skills of sophomore English-majored students as well as possible solutions to improve it more effectively Survey method was chosen to obtain data A total of 40 subjects selected were sophomore English-majored students from Hue College of Foreign Languages All (100.00%) surveyed subjects agreed that listening skills is an important skill and said that their skill needed further improvements Problems mentioned in the survey were catching up with the most common problems of surveyed subjects with the average agreeing percentage was at 82.50% Two problems listed below were the most common problems that sophomore English-majored students have to face with in the listening matter The first problems with the agreeing percentage at 90.00% is that second-year student’s lack of interest and enthusiasm made them tend to ignore this skills and focus on other skills, which lead to the falling of grade The second problems with the agreeing percentage at 85.00% are the lack of practical work Second-year students not often have chances to talk directly to native speakers This was why they said native speakers spoke so fast or didn’t LECTURER: VO THI THUY CHUNG GROUP: GRAVITY understand them because they often used slangs and idioms This is also why they could not catch up with the listening dialog In the light of the result of the survey, we would recommend that both the university and the students need to take actions to address this For the university, we think that it must find more opportunities to help us get chances to communicate with the native speakers to improve our skills Beside this, the lecturers also need to try new way of teaching to get more attentions and interests from their students For students ourselves, we must actively try to solve this by getting to talk with English speaking tourists which are a lot in a tourist city like Hue and also working in those coffee and drinking shops that they are usually visit We also have to raise our interest in listening as find the way that is more suiting in this matter of improving listening skills as watching English movies and music for example In conclusions, all surveyed subjects acknowledged that listening skills is an important skills and they are generally bad at it The lack of interest, enthusiasm and practical works are the most well-known problems sharing between them Therefore, to address these problems, both the college and the students themselves have to be aware of this and change their ways of studding and find more opportunities to practice LECTURER: VO THI THUY CHUNG ...
