Network of Excellence in Training Well Planning Overview © COPYRIGHT 2001, NExT All Rights Reserved Well Planning Overview • Contents; – Session Objectives, – Introduction, – Well Planning Requirements, – Classification of Well Types, – Data Gathering, – Well Plan Format © COPYRIGHT 2001, All Rights Reserved Well Planning Overview • Session Objectives; – By the end of this session, you should be able to: • State the basic requirements for well planning, • List main well types, • List information included in a well plan and identify sources, • Describe format of a well plan generally available prior to drilling © COPYRIGHT 2001, All Rights Reserved Well Planning Overview • Introduction; – Well Planning is one of the most demanding areas of Drilling Engineering, – It requires the integration of various engineering disciplines, corporate polices and personal experience, – The process may vary within drilling industry, but the final aim is to drill a well safely that satisfies the objectives set out in the well proposal, – Well Proposal is usually issued by Petroleum Engineers and describes well objectives © COPYRIGHT 2001, All Rights Reserved Well Planning Overview • Well Planning Requirements; – Main requirement for well planning is to ensure that a program is put together for drilling a well that has, at least, the following characteristics: • The well can be drilled safely, • The well can be used to satisfy the well objectives, • The well is drilled at minimum cost, – It is not always possible to accomplish these factors due to: • Known factors (equipment limitation, casing availability etc), • Unknown factors (geology, pressure) © COPYRIGHT 2001, All Rights Reserved Well Planning Overview • Well Planning Guidelines - Safety ; – Sufficient Hydrostatic Head with fluid in hole - correct density! – Blow Out Prevention Equipment in good condition – Casing designed to contain max anticipated pressure – No kicks or swabbing • Danger to human life and environment • Damage to pay zone during kill operations © COPYRIGHT 2001, All Rights Reserved Well Planning Overview • Normal Operations vs Kick © COPYRIGHT 2001, All Rights Reserved Well Planning Overview Consequences of kicks ! â COPYRIGHT 2001, All Rights Reserved Well Planning Overview • Well Planning Guidelines - Production & Cost; – Completion starts with the first turn of the Bit!
