  • ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: Evaluating the role of PET/CT in diagnosing of primary tumors and metastases in colorectal cancer. OBJECTS AND METHODS: Descriptive study with 71 colorectal cancer patients were diagnosed by endoscopy and anapath, of which median age is 57,3±13,1 and the ratio of male and female is 54,9% and 45,1% respectively, who used PET/CT at The Nuclear Medicine and Oncology Center, Bach Mai Hospital from January 2015 to January 2017. RESULTS: Rectal cancer is more common than colon cancer (41/30). Average size of colorectal tumors is 2.5-5cm. The average SUV value of tumors in the colon is 8.2±4.6 and in the rectum is 7.8±4.5. PET/CT detected 19/71 (26.7%) cases of liver metastasis, with the average max SUV of 9.0±4.3; 8/71 cases of lung metastases and 8/71 cases of bone metastasis with the average max SUV of 4.0±1.4 and 8.5±6.8 respectively. Mediastinal lymph nodes take the highest percentage of lympho node metastases (13/71 cases); followed by abdomal and cervical lympho nodes. Before PET/CT: 39,4% of patients (28/71 cases) were stage IV. After PET/CT: Increased the number of patients in stage IV (31/71 = 43.6%) and decreased in stage II and III. Therefore, 6 patients changed stage of tumor and treatment decisions. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnostic value of PET/CT is higher than that of CT. CT only detected tumors in 94.4% of 71 cases of colorectal cancer. There are 6 of 71 cases with changes of cancer stage and treatment method to select the most appropriate method for patients and families.
