Period 78: I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - Distinguish the sounds /str/ ; /skr/ ; and /skw/. - Pronounce the words and sentences containing these sounds correctly. - Master the use of relative clauses and equivalent types of clauses without relative pronouns. - Use the structures correctly and appropriately to solve communication talks. II. Teaching aids: Textbook, handouts, … III. Anticipated problems: Ss might have difficulty pronouncing clusters because they do not exist in Vietnamese. Therefore, T should be ready to help them. IV. Procedure: Teacher's and Ss' activities Work arrangement I. Pronunciation Distinguish the sounds: - Model these consonant clusters /str/ ; /skr/ ; and /skw/ for a few times. Tell Ss how to pronounce them correctly and then ask Ss to repeat two times. - Read the words once for Ss to hear then ask Ss to read in chorus a few times. - Let Ss practice reading these words individually. - Call some to read aloud to check. Practising sentences containing the target sounds: - Ask Ss to work in pairs and read aloud the given sentences. - Go around to listen and take notes of the typical errors. - Call some to read the sentences to check. II. Grammar: 1. Review of relative clauses: - Give some sentences using relative pronouns and then direct Ss how to omit these pronouns. Examples: 1. The man who lives next door is a doctor. 2. The man ( living ) next door is a doctor. 3. The book (which is) about wildlife is very interesting. 4. The book about wildlife (which was) written by is very interesting. 5. The man whom you met yesterday is my cousin. 6. The book which I bought last Saturday is very interesting. 2. the omission of relative pronouns: - Ask Ss to look at examples 5, 6 and direct Ss how to omit relative pronounce: 7. The man (whom) you met yesterday is my cousin. 8. The book (which) I bought last Saturday is very interesting. Notes: we can omit a relative pronoun when it is the object of the clause. - Ask Ss to give some more sentences with objective relative pronouns. - Ask Ss to do the exercises in textbook. Individual, pair work, and whole class. Teacher's and Ss' activities Work arrangement a. Exercise 3 (8'): - Ask Ss to read through the sentences to find new words and explain if there is. - Put Ss in pairs to identify which sentence allows for an omission of relative pronouns and which ones do not. - Call Ss to give answers and explain their choice to check. Answers: Yes: sentences 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 No: sentence 2 ( relative pronoun is the subject of the clause) b, Exercise 1 (7'): - Give some sentences using relative pronouns as the object of the clauses and ask Ss to rewrite the sentence with the omitted relative pronoun. - Get Ss to read through the sentences in the box to find new word. - Explain new vocabulary if necessary. - Ask Ss to do the exercise in the same way as the example individually and then exchange the answers with a friend for peer correction. - Get Ss to write the answers on the board to check. Answers: 1. . you lost. 2. he invited to the birthday party. 3. John told 4. I bought yesterday 5. we met this morning. 6. . we had for lunch c. Exercise 2 (8'): - Get Ss to read through the sentences in the box to find new word. - Explain new vocabulary if necessary. - Get Ss to complete the sentences individually then exchange the answers with a friend for peer checking. - Call some to write the answers on the board to check. Production (12'): - Ask Ss in groups, to give as many sentences with omitting the relative pronouns as possible. - Ask representatives of groups to present their answers in front of the class. - The group with more correct sentences will be the winner.
