reference works should be measured Leading figures from around the globe survey the current state of the discipline, while also introducing and exploring new, cutting edge themes in order to offer a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the field Section introductions and integrative critiques pull together the separate themes to provide cross-comparisons between chapters to create a cohesive and well-structured volume Unlike other texts in this area, The Routledge Companion to Strategic Human Resource Management incorporates contributions from leading management and business writers in areas adjacent to human resource management, including strategy, innovation and organizational learning. These add fresh and challenging insights into HRM themes from key mainstream business marketing making attractive customer value propositions, management setting reasonable prices, operations creating service delivery systems that allow both employees and customers to accomplish what they are trying to Effective service requires a seamless, integrated approach across different organizational functions with which the customer interacts As a final word, HRM links most fully and positively to customer outcomes when HRM professionals partner with their colleagues in other functions to implement business strategies that create value for stakeholders, both internal and external Note We should note that there has been some discussion in the academic literature on the differences between the constructs of climate and culture (e.g., Dennison 1996) Climate is generally regarded as the perceptions of organizational imperatives, as captured by what is rewarded, supported, and expected in the organization, whereas culture refers to the “deeper” beliefs and values that underlie these practices For our purposes, we are focusing mainly on climate – and the HRM practices that shape employees’ perceptions of them – but both ideas capture the notion of what is important, valued, and rewarded in the organization References Ashkenas, R., Ulrich, D., Jick, T & Kerr, S (1995) The Boundaryless Organization: Breaking the Chains of Organizational Structure San Francisco, CA:
