Scott Calhoun, Series Editor The following exploration of Sting and The Police as artists—as jazz-, funk-, reggae-, and folk-pop artists, specifically—gets it right about how a three-piece combo can turn alchemic Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers, and Gordon Matthew Sumner, or Sting, brought their musical curiosities and complex personalities together to form a new wave of astute, infectious English song craft, while giving audiences years of thrilling performances Aaron J West gets it right too, about the chemistry of a complicated musical artist who trends toward the restless, virtuosic type, as is true of Sting Seeming to enjoy the chase of craft as much as the adulation of the crowd, The Police’s potency came from skillful compounding of musical styles already marked by strong grooves, inventive tempos, and playfulness The music The Police made, and that Sting continues to make, has satisfied the literate and literary, as well the mainstream appetite for something eminently fun to sing and dance to But Sting’s thirst for a greater, more singular pursuit of craft and crowd sent him on many more cultural quests after The Police, looking for the pop hooks, world beats, activist heroics, and even stage roles offered by film and theater, to satiate the artist Sometimes accused of appropriation by critics who lean toward purists, The Police’s music has nevertheless endured It has inspired many post-1980s artists who had the good fortune of composing their songs in times when borrowing, referencing, and sampling was de rigueur At times accused of affectation, Sting, never the shy nor demure performer, has turned any such complaints to his advantage, commanding our vii viii FOREW ORD attention when on a new project by promising to tip the balance from showmanship toward sophistication This study presents Sting and The Police by choosing a different path of presentation Pop legends they are, with storied lives and plenty of laurels to show for it But West’s perspective is drawn to seeing their rise to acclaim and influence in popular music history as the acts of artists choosing their colors, their brush strokes, and their canvases, intentionally assembling the pieces to make something brilliantly new FU RT H E R LI ST E N I N G 149 mix of non-Western music, Afro-Cuban grooves, and even a string quartet The Police Live! (June 1995), album, A&M Records This double album features early and late performances of The Police The first is from a Boston show in 1979 The band is raw and still evolving from their punk influences The second performance is from a two-night engagement in Atlanta in 1983 The Police are more polished, and they are clearly enjoying being the biggest band in the world Mercury Falling (March 1996), album, A&M Records Although not as upbeat as Ten Summoner’s Tales, it features another country song, “I’m So Happy I Can’t Stop Crying,” which would be a hit for Toby Keith in late 1997 Strontium 90: Police Academy (August 1997), album, ARK 21 This album features a performance from May 28, 1977, by bassist Mike Howlett, Copeland, Sting, and Summers, known collectively as Strontium 90 This was the first time that Summers performed with Sting and Copeland After this concert, they changed their name to the Elevators, but after a couple more performances, they disbanded Green Chimneys: The Music of Thelonious Monk (May 1999), album, RCA Victor This is Summers’s tribute to the music of the legendary jazz pianist, Thelonious Monk Although Monk’s music is sacred ground in the jazz world, Summers’s arrangements convey a sense of respect and love He even convinced Sting to join him on “Round Midnight.” Brand New Day (September 1999), album, A&M Records Brand New Day was heralded as Sting’s comeback album Millions of copies were sold around the world, largely fueled by the single “Desert Rose.” The tune, featuring Algerian singer Cheb Mami, was used in a cross-promotional Jaguar commercial and became a worldwide hit Peggy’s Blue Skylight (September 2000), album, RCA Victor 150 FURTHER LISTENING Much like Green Chimneys, Summers’s Peggy’s Blue Skylight is a tribute to another jazz luminary, Charles Mingus Summers is clearly paying his debt to the traditional jazz repertoire The Grand Pecking Order (October 2001), album, Elektra Records Following a hiatus from drumming, Copeland was asked by Les Claypool, the bassist for Primus, to join him and Trey Anastasio, the guitarist for Phish, for a one-time performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2000 They named their new supergroup Oysterhead The Grand Pecking Order was their first and only album There have been persistent rumors that the group will re-form at some point Sacred Love (September 2003), album, A&M Records Once again, Sting experiments with various genres This album features R&B, soul, electronic dance music, and rock His duet with Mary J Blige on “Whenever I Say Your Name” is particularly compelling Songs from the Labyrinth (October 2006), album, Deutsche Grammophon This album primarily consists of Sting’s interpretations of the works of John Dowland, a Renaissance lutenist and songwriter Sting spent an extended period studying performances of Dowland, corresponding with Dowland scholars, and countless hours practicing the lute The Stewart Copeland Anthology (August 2007), album, Koch Records This is an excellent compilation for the casual fan of Stewart Copeland It spans works from Klark Kent to the theme music for the video game Spyro the Dragon If on a Winter’s Night (October 2009), album, Deutsche Grammophon This album is a collection of newly composed and arranged winterthemed tunes based on English ballads, fourteenth-century carols, lullabies, and traditional English songs This contemplative music deals with the mysticism and melancholy of the winter season FU RT H E R LI ST E N I N G 151 Symphonicities (August 2010), album, Deutsche Grammophon This album is comprised of orchestral arrangements of Sting’s and The Police’s greatest hits The arrangements provide a new take on some old hits, and Sting’s voice is peerless Fundamental (September 2012), album, Polysom Records This is a remarkable album of Brazilian-inspired compositions with vocalist Fernanda Taki, which echoes the legendary albums of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá Summers’s music is elegant and sophisticated The Last Ship (September 2013), album, Cherrytree/Interscope/ A&M Records This album contains some of the music featured in Sting’s Broadway show, The Last Ship The album was the first since Sacred Love to be entirely composed by Sting The songs are inspired by Sting’s childhood and his upbringing in Wallsend INDEX Seconds of Summer, 124 9½ Weeks, 127 10 cc, 73, 106 “25%” (UB40 song), 33 39/Smooth, 122 924 Gilman Street (punk club), 121, 122 2112 (album), 116 A&M Records, 61–62, 64, 65, 79 Abdul Nassar, Gamal, 58 AC/DC, 70 Adam Ant, 94 Adams, Bryan, 97 The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, 50 “Africa Unite”, 14 “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)”, 93 Agatha, 75 AIR Studios, 45 Alan Parson’s Project, Alice in Chains, 117, 120 Alkaline Trio, 103 “All Four Seasons”, 53–54 American Bandstand, 68 American Idiot (album), 123–124 “American Idiot” (song), 123–124 Amnesty International, 82, 83–84;
