Nằm ở vùng Đông Bắc của Việt Nam, cách Hà Nội 151km về phía Đông Bắc, Vịnh Hạ Long là một phần của vịnh Bắc Bộ bao gồm vùng biển của thành phố Hạ Long, thị xã Cẩm Phả và một phần của huyện đảo Vân Đồn. Vịnh Hạ Long tiếp giáp với đảo Cát Bà phía tây nam , phía Đông là biển Đông, phần tiếp giáp với đất liền chạy dài khoảng 120 km bờ biển.
