The purpose of this release is to add refined detailed content to the material that was published in BOK 1.4, as well as add content in most of the areas not addressed in 1.4. This release moves us significantly closer to a complete guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge. As such, this release is being made available to IIBA members only. We will continue to provide the table of contents and pieces of content to the general public to help potential members understand what is covered in the BOK. This document represents a snapshot of the Knowledge Area documentation as of June 2006. Over the past months since the October 2005 previous release we have gathered feedback and input from many business analysis practitioners through a structured feedback process. Each reviewer in that process was prescreened to ensure they represented practitioners with at least 35 years experience. Their feedback was used by the Knowledge Area subcommittees to refine our content. We extend a huge thankyou to each reviewer for taking the time to help in the ongoing creation of the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge.

documented during the Requirements Gathering phase It helps the Business Analyst to manage requirements scope and change requests, and it provides a framework for testing the solution “Requirements traceability is the ability to describe and follow the life of a requirement in both a forward and backward direction, i.e., from its origins through its development and specification, to it subsequent deployment and use, and through periods of ongoing refinement and iteration in any of these phases” [3] During the design phase of the project, the Business Analyst should map the design artifacts back to the matrix created during the Requirements Documentation & Analysis phase There are numerous tools and techniques the Business Analyst can employ to trace requirements The decision on how to model the matrix, as well as whether or not automated tools will be used to assist the traceability process throughout the project lifecycle, will have been decided at an earlier phase when requirements are in process of being documented The approach will have been sanctioned by the project manager and the project team Regarding tools, most software vendors that manufacture an array of office products will have spreadsheet and database capabilities, so at the very least, these office tools can be used to create and maintain the traceability matrix There are also many commercial workbench products that support more comprehensive solutions, such as the ability to list requirements and track them through design ant testing in an automated, bi-directional way, tracing the links between the artifacts and providing history on requirements changes throughout the project lifecycle The traceability matrix described in the Requirements Planning and Management KA depicts a standard model that is common to most projects It details a hierarchy structure that begins with the high level business requirements at the top of the structure chart which are traced down to through more detailed requirements which are then mapped further to the testing and implementation domains Creating a matrix to trace requirements from their definition through the implementation and testing at the conclusion of this exercise, a number of deductions can be made that will surface potential issues, such as: If a row does not contain an “X” in any of the columns, then it is likely that a feature is missing that the design did not fulfill If a column exits that does not have an “X” in any of the rows, then a feature was possibly introduced erroneously, or the meaning of the feature was misunderstood by the Business Analyst and furter investigation is required Tracing Features to Use Cases If the Business Analyst and designer are documenting the end user interactions with the software by developing system use cases, then the Business Analyst can create another matrix to trace the feature to the use cases which will help ensure that the design is complete The following is each process that is assigned to Phase will undergo further elaboration by the design team and the Business Analyst If Use Cases are being used by the project team to document the end user/system interactions, then the process will be assigned a use case id for tracking purposes System use cases will be built as a collaborative effort between the Business Analyst and the designer, and reviewed for completeness and accuracy by the stakeholders During system use case specification, alternative design solutions may be offered depending on the complexities of the features that must be implemented The designer may need to propose variations on how the screens will interface with the end user and how much data can be presented on a screen Usability requirements may need to be negotiated The design is a collaborative effort, and tradeoffs between the desires of the stakeholders and the design team always occur, with the Business Analyst playing a key role in the communication and negotiation process It is important that all changes agreed to during the design phase are signed off by the stakeholders and documented by the Business Analyst to ensure that that Analysts are responsible for identifying the business needs of their clients and stakeholders, to determine solutions to business problems The Business Analyst is responsible for requirements
