The man went into her small flat and set down on the sofa. The dog followed him and climbed up on the sofa next to him. Its mouth was open and breathing heavily. Alison saw several drops of the dog’s saliva on the light green material that covered the sofa. “Do you mind if I smoke?” asked the man. Without waiting an answer, he lit a cigarette. “You must be considering why I’ve come. Well, i hope you won’t be offended, but…”He stopped suddenly and coughed.
