Within historical times, rhinos were still widespread in the African savannas and the tropical forests of Asia. Today however, very few rhinos (about 17,000 in the world) now survive outside national parks and reserves. The males can grow up 1,8 m long and weigh up to 3,000kg while the Males are a bit smaller with the length of 1,2 m and a weight of 1,000 – 1,500 kg. The life span of rhinos can be up to forty years. Rhinos are known to sleep both standing and lying on the ground and are fond of wallowing in muddy pools and sandy river-beds. Their main food is grass and plants. WWF is one of the few organizations attempting to tackle these threats from all angles: strengthening protected areas in Africa and Asia, lobbying to halt the illegal timber trade, and stamping out the illegal trade in horn.
