Automatically and securely opens service requests with Oracle for common hardware faults • Enables fast and accurate resolution of the hardware faults – Improved availability, less downtime • Can be integrated with existing monitoring tools – ASR manager can send SR notifications via SNMP traps to existing monitoring tools • Included with hardware warranty and Oracle Premier Support for Systems available as a feature of your Oracle or Sun hardware warranty warranty, and Oracle Premier Support for Systems or valid Sun support plan The ASR software helps to resolve problems faster by using auto-case generation for Oracle's Sun server and storage systems when specific hardware faults occur With the release of the Exadata software version 11.2.1.3.1, ASR functionality is extended to Exadata and Database Machine ASR automatically opens service requests (SRs) with Oracle Support when specific hardware faults occur either in the Exadata servers or the d t b database servers Note N t in the slide illustrates the ASR process It shows how a Service Requests (SR) is automatically opened by the ASR Manager after it receives an SNMP trap that is triggered by a hardware fault Within Oracle Support Services the automatic service request is acknowledged via email and serviced according to normal procedures Customers should note that there are occasions when a SR may not be automatically filed This can happen due to loss of connectivity to the ASR manager, for example Oracle recommends that customers continue to monitor their systems for faults and engage Oracle Support higher) or Solaris 10 update (or higher) – ASR Manager g version 2.7 or higher g – Connectivity to the management network of Database Machine – https connectivity to Oracle Support – Can upgrade an existing ASR Manager to monitor Database Machine – Can use a Database Machine database server as the ASR Manager, though not recommended • Technical system administrator contact for the Database shipping from the factory with the Exadata software version 11.2.1.3.1 the database servers are imaged with Oracle Linux 5.5 For existing Database Machines the database servers can be upgraded manually using standard Oracle Linux upgrade procedures Copyright © 2010, Oracle and/or its affiliates All rights reserved Oracle Linux 5.5 With Exadata software version 11.2.1.3.1, the operating system in the Exadata servers is upgraded to Oracle Linux 5.5 This version of Oracle Linux includes security fixes not included in the previous version used in Exadata and Database Machine, Oracle Linux 5.3 Similarly, for Database Machines shipping from the factory with the Exadata software version 11.2.1.3.1, the database servers are also imaged with Oracle Linux 5.5 However, note that for existing deployments, when applying the Exadata 11.2.1.3.1 patch the operating system on the database servers is not be automatically upgraded to Oracle Linux 5.5 The database servers continue to use Exadata servers to Oracle Linux 5.5, security has been enhanced by eliminating the installation of unnecessary Linux packages packages Also, unnecessary services like nfs, ftp and telnet are disabled by default to minimize security vulnerabilities In addition, firewall functionality (using iptables) with pre‐configured rules is implemented on the Exadata servers For Database Machines shipping with version 11.2.1.3.1, or for freshly re‐imaged database servers, the number of Linux packages that are pre‐installed is also minimized and unnecessary services are disabled by default Customers also Internal & Oracle Academy Use Only – Implemented with pre pre-configured configured rules on Exadata servers – Available but not implemented on database servers Pro-active disk quarantine • If a disk or flash module fails, or is about to fail: – Associated grid disks are immediately dropped from corresponding ASM disk groups and from Exadata Smart Flash Cache for flash modules – ASM re-creates lost data using mirrored extents sooner – Greater protection from potential data loss associated with multiple overlapping disk failures Copyright © 2010, Oracle and/or its affiliates All rights reserved Pro-active disk quarantine With Exadata 11.2.1.3.1, if the cell server detects a failed disk or a disk predicted to fail soon, it will pro‐actively pro actively drop the associated grid disks from the ASM disk groups they belong to rather than waiting for the time specified in the DISK_REPAIR_TIME disk group attribute (3.6 hours by default) This ensures that ASM can immediately start to re‐create the data stored on the failed disk using the mirrored extents on other disks, thus preserving the data redundancy in the ASM disk group This behavior improves the overall availability of the system because previously the loss of another disk during the DISK_REPAIR_TIME window could have resulted in the loss of data Similarly, Si il l if th the cellll server d detects t t a flflash h SNMP traps can be configured to alert when a disk fails, or is about fail, on a Database Machine database server • SNMP alerts from InfiniBand switches Copyright © 2010, Oracle and/or its affiliates All rights reserved Other new features In conjunction with the Exadata 11.2.1.3.1 update, it is now possible to configure and send SNMP traps when a disk fails fails, or is about to fail fail, in the Database Machine database servers servers Also, in conjunction with this update the InfiniBand switch software in upgraded to version 1.1.3.2 which includes software ILOM functionality This new functionality sends SNMP traps, about the overall health of the InfiniBand switch, which can be used to better monitor the InfiniBand switch Exadata and Database Machine Administration Workshop A - 10
