Vinh, May 5 , 2011 Phan Thi Thuan i ABSTRACT In this thesis, we explore how modality is manifested in two speeches of Obama : "The Inaugural Address" and "the Nobel" . The author discusses about text and discourse, text analysis and discourse analysis. And then, the author mentions to the notion "modality" with the definition, types of modality, modal meanings and expressions of modality. They are basic theoretical background for analyzing the data in chapter 2 of the second part " DEVELOPMENT". Next, we analyse the way modality is manifested in two speeches of Obama. Finally, we point out some problems facing the learners when they learn modality. Ai đã hiểu được tầm quan trọng? Để ghi nhớ tốt được bài hát và có hiệu quả, ta phải hiểu nội dung của bài hát và cách phát âm của từng từ. Do đó trước khi luyện hát, bạn nên tra từ điển để nắm rõ được nghĩa của tất cả các từ và cách phát âm của những từ đó. Bài hát càng khó, càng nhiều từ mới mà bạn không biết thì sau khi hát được bài đó, bạn sẽ học được càng nhiều từ. Đây là một cách tuyệt vời để học từ vựng. Việc học tiếng Anh qua các bài hát thì chắc hẳn các bạn ai cũng đã từng được nghe nói đến. Thế nhưng có lẽ chúng ta chưa được hiểu cặn kẽ về tầm quan trọng của nó. Trong bài viết này, tôi xin giới thiệu, phân tích cặn kẽ những tác dụng to lớn của phương pháp này. Ngôn ngữ thực ra chỉ là sự bắt chước, lặp lại. Khi mới sinh, tư duy của trẻ con chưa hình thành nên chúng học ngôn ngữ bằng cách này: sự bắt chước, lặp lại. Khi càng lớn, não bộ con người phát triển mạnh về tư duy logic, việc ghi nhớ và học mọi thứ đều nhờ vào logic. Không có logic thì ta học rất khó. Khi học một từ mới, ví dụ “fish” là “con cá” thì chỉ là ta học thuộc lòng thôi chứ đâu có logic gì ở đây. Nó cũng giống như ghi nhớ một số điện thoại 0900039xxx chẳng hạn, chỉ đơn thuần là sự ghi nhớ nhờ vào lặp lại nhiều lần. Một vị giáo sư, tiến sĩ hay một người bình thường mà ghi nhớ số điện thoại này họ cùng dùng chung một cách để ghi nhớ. Tất cả đều chỉ là ghi nhớ nhờ vào sự lặp lại! Vậy để ghi nhớ tiếng Anh, điều vô cùng quan trọng là chúng ta cần có sự lặp lại nhiều lần. Khi ta nghe ca nhạc, ta có thể nghe đi nghe lại một bài hát yêu thích mà không thấy chán. Những bài hát lại có ý nghĩa hay nên rất dễ nhớ, đặc biệt là những bài mà ta thích. Như vậy tự động, ta sẽ có được sự lặp lại nhiều lần các cấu trúc tiếng Anh mà không phải đầu tư gì cả, lại vừa được thư giãn. Thêm nữa, những đoạn điệp khúc, đồng ca (chorus) càng được lặp lại nhiều lần trong cả bài hát. Vậy nên ta càng được lặp lại những cấu trúc câu đó nhiều hơn. Cộng với ấn tượng mạnh của bài hát để lại trong đầu ta nữa, ta ghi nhớ dễ dàng hơn rất nhiều so với các bài học khô khan của Effortless. Nếu để ý, bạn sẽ thấy những bạn có giọng hay, phát âm chuẩn, ngữ âm tốt trong khi nói tiếng Anh đều là những người có sở thích hát tiếng Anh. Đây chính là minh chứng cho phương pháp “Deep learning” (học sâu nhớ lâu) mà họ đã học một cách vô thức qua các bài hát mà chính bản thân họ cũng không để ý. Nghe nhạc giúp bạn làm quen linh hoạt với các tiêu đề khó trong tiếng anh như: sự luyến âm, nối âm, ngữ điệu lên xuống… Đặc trưng của các bài hát là giai điệu rất phong phú nên ta có thể nghe và hát theo để luyện cả ngữ âm, ngữ điệu trong câu. Nếu bạn luyện ngữ âm trong một lớp ngữ âm, một bài ngữ âm thì được vài lần là muốn vứt sách đi rồi. Điều hay ở đây là bài hát giúp ta luyện ngữ âm một cách vô cùng thích thú và vì thế đương nhiên là hiệu quả cũng sẽ cao hơn gấp bội. Theo các nghiên cứu tâm lý học đã chứng minh: não người có khả năng ghi nhớ tốt các hình ảnh. Chính vì thế, khi học hát, ta cần vận dụng yếu tố này để kiếm những Video Karaoke có phụ đề ở dưới để luyện. Bởi khi đó ta vừa có thể xem được hình ảnh của bài hát, vừa có thể có được lời. For history tells us that while these truths may be self- evident, they’ve never been self-executing; that while freedom is a gift from God, it must be secured by His people here on Earth. (Applause.) The patriots of 1776 did not fight to replace the tyranny of a king with the privileges of a few or the rule of a mob. They gave to us a republic, a government of, and by, and for the people, entrusting each generation to keep safe our founding creed. And for more than two hundred years, we have. Through blood drawn by lash and blood drawn by sword, we learned that no union founded on the principles of liberty and equality could survive half-slave and half- free. We made ourselves anew, and vowed to move forward together. Together, we determined that a modern economy requires railroads and highways to speed travel and commerce, schools and colleges to train our workers. Together, we discovered that a free market only thrives when there are rules to ensure competition and fair play. Together, we resolved that a great nation must care for the vulnerable, and protect its people from life’s worst hazards and misfortune. Through it all, we have never relinquished our skepticism of central authority, nor have we succumbed to the fiction that all society’s ills can be cured through government alone. Our celebration of initiative and enterprise, our insistence on hard work and personal responsibility, these are constants in our character. But we have always understood that when times change, so must we; that fidelity to our founding principles requires new responses to new challenges; that preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action. For the American people can no more meet the demands of today’s world by acting alone than American soldiers could have met the forces of fascism or communism with muskets and militias. No single person can train all the math and science teachers we’ll need to equip our children for the future, or build the roads and networks and research labs that will bring new jobs and businesses to our shores. Now, more than ever, we must do these things together, as one nation and one people. This generation of Americans has been tested by crises that steeled our resolve and proved our resilience. A decade of war is now ending. An economic recovery has begun. America’s possibilities are limitless, for we possess all the qualities that this world without boundaries demands: youth and drive; diversity and openness; an endless capacity for risk and a gift for reinvention. My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it so long as we seize it together. For we, the people, understand that our country cannot succeed when a shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it. We believe that America’s prosperity must rest upon the broad shoulders of a rising middle class. Now, all he could do was sit and listen to the others. His eyes were old. He could not see, but his ears were wide open to every sound. “Aha.” That was the sound of his daughter, Sit-cum-to-ha. She was beating the dogs, trying to make them stand in front of the snow sleds. He was forgotten by her, and by the others, too. They had to look for new hunting grounds. The long, snowy ride waited. The days of the northlands were growing short. The tribe could not wait for death. Koskoosh was dying. The stiff, crackling noises of frozen animal skins told him that the chief’s tent was being torn down. The chief was a mighty hunter. He was his son, the son of Koskoosh. Koskoosh was being left to die. As the women worked, old Koskoosh could hear his son’s voice drive them to work faster. He listened harder. It was the last time he would hear that voice. A child cried, and a woman sang softly to quiet it. The child was Koo-tee, the old man thought, a sickly child. It would die soon, and they would burn a hole in the frozen ground to bury it. They would cover its small body with stones to keep the wolves away. “Well, what of it? A few years, and in the end, death. Death waited ever hungry. Death had the hungriest stomach of all.” Koskoosh listened to other sounds he would hear no more: the men tying strong leather rope around the sleds to hold their belongings; the sharp sounds of leather whips, ordering the dogs to move and pull the sleds. “Listen to the dogs cry. How they hated the work.” They were off. Sled after sled moved slowly away into the silence. They had passed out of his life. He must meet his last hour alone. “But what was that?” The snow packed down hard under someone’s shoes. A man stood beside him, and placed a hand gently on his old head. His son was good to do this. He remembered other old men whose sons had not done this, who had left without a goodbye. His mind traveled into the past until his son’s voice brought him back. “It is well with you?” his son asked. And the old man answered, “It is well.” “There is wood next to you and the fire burns bright,” the son said. “The morning is gray and the cold is here. It will snow soon. Even now it is snowing. Ahh, even now it is snowing. “The tribesmen hurry. Their loads are heavy and their stomachs flat from little food. The way is long and they travel fast. I go now. All is well?” “It is well. I am as last year’s leaf that sticks to the tree. The first breath that blows will knock me to the ground. My voice is like an old woman’s. My eyes no longer show me the way my feet go. I am tired and all is well.” He lowered his head to his chest and listened to the snow as his son rode away. He felt the sticks of wood next to him again. One by one, the fire would eat them. And step by step, death would cover him. When the last stick was gone, the cold would come. First, his feet would freeze. Then, his hands. The cold would travel slowly from the outside to the inside of him, and he would rest. It was easy…all men must die. He felt sorrow, but he did not think of his sorrow. It was the way of life. He had lived close to the earth, and the law was not new to him. It was the law of the body. Nature was not kind to the body. She was not thoughtful of the person alone. She was interested only in the group, the race, the species. This was a deep thought for old Koskoosh. He had seen examples of it in all his life. The tree sap in early spring; the new-born green leaf, soft and fresh as skin; the fall of the yellowed, dry leaf. In this alone was all history. He placed another stick on the fire and began to remember his past. He had been a great chief, too. He had seen days of much food and laughter; fat stomachs when food was left to rot and spoil; times when they left animals alone, unkilled; days when women had many children.
