WorldDSL TM Local and Remote Management of HDSL and G.SHDSL Circuits ADC’s WorldDSLTM family of products includes shelf-mounted management cards and a choice of local and remote management options Both local and remote management can operate simultaneously, offering both centralized remote management of circuits and local craft access for installation and troubleshooting The WorldDSL HDSL management system consists of the following: Management cards The EMU-830 L4/L6 are Exchange Office Management Units (EMUs) that install in a WorldDSL Exchange Office Management Shelf (EMS) EMUs provide a single point interface for local or remote ASCII access and as the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent for WorldDSL graphical user interface (GUI) software applications Management software • The Java-based EES-897 is a SNMP software package for managing up to 250 WorldDSL shelves (EMS) This GUI-based, single user software package is easy to use and includes its own auto-discovery and trap receiver EES-897 runs on either Windows or Sun workstations • StarGazerTM WorldDSL is a Java-based SNMP software package that adds client/server capability to WorldDSL management as well as a host of features such as elaborate security and segmentation features, an alarm browser, automatic data collection, and data export EMU-830 Management Card The EMU-830 inserts into a dedicated management card slot in any EMS-83x shelf to provide centralized management Available with or without external clock input, the EMU-830 automatically polls and formats data from each line card to quickly respond to SNMP requests from either the EES-897 or StarGazer WorldDSL management software packages It serves as the SNMP agent as well as a communications path between all 16 installed modems and associated customer premise modems and doublers Each EMU-830 is equipped with six Form C dry contact relays and an alarm cutoff button Relays are divided into two sets of three, as follows: one for Critical, one for Major and one for Minor alarms Each alarm relay supports both Normally Open and Normally Closed alarm systems Alarms are generated by any HDSL modem, doubler, or by the EMU itself EMU alarms include loss of input shelf power and loss of more than a programmable number of HDSL links Each HDSL modem alarm is programmable for a severity level in the EMU 6/03 • 1265730 WorldDSL Local and Remote Management of HDSL and G.SHDSL Circuits WorldDSL Craft Screens from EMU-830 All WorldDSL LTUs and NTUs have a local craft port that provides craft access to ASCII text-based menu screens for monitoring, managing, and testing modems At one end of the circuit is the communications master that offers communications and craft screens for the NTU and up to two doublers Craft screens may be accessed with any available PC and commercially available terminal emulation software such as HyperTerminal or Procomm w w w a d c c o m • + - - - 8 • - 0 - 6 - Terminal Adapter Option (TAO) on EMU-830 TAO (Terminal Adapter Option) is a centralized craft screen function enabled through an EMU-830 L4 or L6 installed in any EMS-83x shelf With TAO the user can plug a VT-100 compatible terminal or PC into the EMU-830 craft port and access any HDSL modem installed in the chassis or any attached doubler or NTU From this screen, users have access to all functions necessary to configure, monitor, and test modems, attached doublers, or CPE TAO offers an at-a-glance opening screen showing all modems installed in the shelf and the alarm status of each In addition, TAO can also be accessed remotely via a dial-up, Hayes compatible, auto-answer modem With this dial-up option, the EMU-830 can dial-out to a designated printer or management station and automatically report modem or shelf alarms TAO also may be accessed via the SLIP (Subscriber Line Interface Protocol) port using Telnet In this mode, dial-out alarm reporting is not available 6/03 • 1265730 WorldDSL Local and Remote Management of HDSL and G.SHDSL Circuits WorldDSL Two shelves in a single location may be daisy-chained together using 10Base-T ports to reduce the number of dial-up lines required Up to 32 shelves, each requiring an EMU830, can be daisy-chained together via 10Base-T ports and an inexpensive 10Base-T hub Daisy-chaining cannot be done when using Telnet or the SLIP port w w w a d c c o m • + - - - 8 • - 0 - 6 - 6/03 • 1265730 WorldDSL Local and Remote Management of HDSL and G.SHDSL Circuits WorldDSL EES-897 SNMP GUI Management System The EES-897 provides complete remote management from a Windows PC or Sun Solaris workstation using SNMP The point-and-click software package features an easy-to-use, Windows-like graphical monitor with management, test screens and color-coding The software provides graphical circuit overviews including configuration, performance data and alarms, detailed performance data histories, configuration management, loopbacks and bit error rate testing and more for all attached modems and doublers EES-897 also includes an auto-discovery feature that identifies manageable network elements By merely clicking on a discovered node, management is invoked quickly and easily w w w a d c c o m • + - - - 8 • - 0 - 6 - 6/03 • 1265730 WorldDSL Local and Remote Management of HDSL and G.SHDSL Circuits WorldDSL StarGazer WorldDSL StarGazer WorldDSL adds a host of features to the EES-897 for even the most sophisticated users of the WorldDSL product family StarGazer configurations can range from a single PC (portable craft device) to a network-wide, multi-client/multi-server distributed solution Distributed StarGazer configurations run on any combination of Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Sun Solaris or systems StarGazer features a client/server architecture and multi-level security system that enforces access control through a login mechanism based on personal user IDs and passwords The software supports an unlimited number of user accounts that can be each assigned an individual password and one or more management roles As an option, users are assigned to authorized devices, providing segmentation of management and monitoring functions on a geographic basis The IP Explorer feature of the StarGazer Network Management Client GUI shows the discovered network in tree and topology map views, automatically organized by subnet From these views, StarGazer’s Geo Map view can organize the network into an unlimited hierarchy of sites and maps for effective domain-based management of the distributed network Maps, in bitmap or JPEG format, are user provided and are readily available from numerous sources StarGazer includes an advanced, integrated fault management solution as well as detailed alarm/event viewing and tracking capabilities Alarm summary views track and count alarms by site, network element, and severity The detailed alarm/event browser provides full visibility to all alarm and event attributes and includes interactive features such as alarm acknowledgement, audible alarms, event history, event notes, and viewing the configuration and status of alarmed resources Users can easily apply any of the built-in alarm/event filters and event browser layouts to create personal views This allows more flexible partitioning of work based on product type, technology, skill level, or geographic domain, leading to improved productivity Users can attach notes to an event or alarm, which helps to track progress toward problem resolution Notes and acknowledgements are immediately tagged by user ID and time stamp and made available for viewing by all users in the active events/alarms browser This data also is stored in the event history database for future reference w w w a d c c o m • + - - - 8 • - 0 - 6 - 6/03 • 1265730 WorldDSL Local and Remote Management of HDSL and G.SHDSL Circuits WorldDSL StarGazer WorldDSL supports a client database on a per-circuit basis This allows users to input information about each client’s configuration and management into the server database Users may utilize Word or Text to install a template into each circuit element including LTU, NTU, and two doublers The freeform database may be used to identify customer contact and equipment locations, record maintenance history or any other database elements the user desires StarGazer WorldDSL can, on a user-settable schedule, automatically poll each network element to collect and store performance statistics This data can be easily exported in either MySQL or Oracle format so that long-term analysis to support such functions as service level agreements can be quickly and easily verified StarGazer features a WorldDSL active shelf front panel view LEDs on the front panel of each modem are actively shown on this screen and show current status of each circuit in a manner identical to viewing the front panel of the modem itself A double-click on the screen image of the modem of interest enables all of the management and control capabilities of the EES-897 w w w a d c c o m • + -
