Hanoi, March 2015 Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh ABSTRACT In order to broaden students’ vocabulary, the researcher has planned to use supplementary reading materials in line with the core material. This study aims at developing vocabulary for firstyear students at the College of Technology and Foreign Relation Economy through supplementary reading materials. It is based on a survey research to obtain its objectives. The subjects of the study are 85 fi rs t-y ear students at the elementary level in the academic year of 2014-2015, and three classes have been observed. The data have been collected from two main sources: two sets of questionnaires and class observations. The results of the study show that there have been improvement in students’ vocabulary knowledge after students took part in the program. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to use the supplementary reading materials besides the core material. However, they should pay attention to the selection of suitable reading texts plus vocabulary-enhancement exercises and additional vocabulary exercises so as to develop students’ vocabulary. • In addition to the core material, teachers often spend a small amount of time providing students with supplementary reading texts plus vocabulary enhancement exercises or additional vocabulary exercises to help students develop their vocabulary. It means that teachers consequently have to collect more reading texts and vocabulary exercises from other materials besides the textbook and workbook.

  • The supplementary reading program lasted for the period of 4 weeks. In the program, supplementary readings and vocabulary exercises have been given to students. All of these exercises have been carefully chosen by teachers to ensure that they were appropriate to students’ English level and they contained the vocabulary topics taught in the course book.

  • Question 1: What do you think of the role of vocabulary in learning English?

  • Question 2: Do you think it is necessary to develop English vocabulary?

  • Most of the students are well aware of the importance of vocabulary in their English learning so the results in chart 2 indicate that 60% of the students agree that English vocabulary development is needed for them and also nearly that number (40%) strongly agree. None of the students give their disagreement or strong disagreement with the necessity of developing English vocabulary.

  • Question 3: What do you learn new words from?

  • Table 3: Sources from which students learn new words

  • Question 3 explores the sources from which students learn new words. All students (100%) reveal that they learn new words from the textbook and 72.94% of them claim that they learn new words from the exercises given by their teachers. 9.41% of the students state that they learn new words from reading newspapers and magazines and 50.59% say that they learn new words from other sources.

  • Question 4: What are your difficulties in learning new words?

  • This question aims at investigating the difficulties students have in learning vocabulary. The results show that the majority of the students (96.47%) find it hard to remember words for a long time. Many students (89.41%) claim that they have difficulties memorizing the spelling and meaning of new words. Moreover, some of the respondents think that using words in authentic contexts is difficult and 17.65% of the students find it difficult to pronounce words. From the results of this question, the researcher knows the difficulties the students have in learning vocabulary and thinks of suitable ways to help them overcome these difficulties in vocabulary learning.

  • Question 5: What would you like your teachers to do in vocabulary lessons?

    • These questions in table 5 are designed to investigate first-year students’ perceptions of the need of supplementary reading materials in class. The table shows that most students have positive attitudes towards this program. Accordingly, 83.35% of the students agree that the supplementary reading materials should be used to develop students’ vocabulary. Also, 72.94% of them think that the supplementary reading materials make them more motivated in vocabulary learning and 84.70% say that their vocabulary is widened owning to supplementary reading materials. Besides, 96.47% students believe that the supplementary reading materials make the lesson more interesting. These reasons seem to be in good accordance with the results of question 10 in the same table. Most of the students disagree with the statement that using the supplementary reading materials is a waste of time.

    • From the results above, it can be concluded that the students like this program. In their opinion, the combination between the current textbook with the supplementary reading materials is necessary for enjoyment and vocabulary development. Students’ positive attitudes are clearly seen in the answers to the following questions.

    • Question 11: What are the benefits of vocabulary-enhancement exercises from supplementary reading materials?

    • Question 12: What are the benefits you gain from the supplementary reading texts?

    • Question 13: How has your vocabulary knowledge been improved thanks to the supplementary reading program?
