Reported Speech with Conditional Sentences I. Definition: It refers to using a noun clause to repeat what someone has said II. How to make a reported speech with conditional sentences: 1. Deleting quotation mark (“…”) and colon (:) Ex: Direct: He said: “If it rains, I will stay at home” Indirect: He said that if it rained, he will stay at home 2. Changing the tense of verbs Example: 1. He said: “If it rains, I will stay at home”  He said that if it rained, he would stay at home 2. She said: “if I were a bird, I would be a dove”  She said that if she were a bird, she would be a dove 3. Mary said to him: “if you had followed my advice, you could have been the winner”  Mary said to him that if he had followed her advice, he could have been the winner * Note: Conditional type 1: we apply all the necessary changes as usual (change of verb tenses, pronouns, adverbs of time & place) Conditional type 2 & 3: we do not change of verb tenses but we follow the rules to change pronouns, adverbs of time & place 4.
