Objectives By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to further practice with pronouns "who, that, which" and clearly identify "defining" and "non – defining clauses" III. Language contents Vocabulary: horn, snout, rhinoceros, logo, swallow, chew, extensive, tail, ancient. Grammar: - Relative pronouns "who, what, which" - Relative clauses IV. Teaching aids Textbook, posters, pictures… V. Procedure Steps Contents Drawing experiences 1. Warm-up (8’) - Lets Ss play the game Knowledge Game-short answers - Tells Ss to work with another partner to answer the following questions about general understanding. - The pair with the most correct answers will be the winner. Questions Answers 1. Which city in Japan was struck by a huge earthquake? 2. Which country won the 1998 Tiger Cup? 3. Which animal has one or two horns on its snout? 4. Which explorer discovered America? 5. Which planet is the closest to the earth? 6. Which animal in Viet Nam was chosen to be the logo of SEA Games 2003? 7. Which ASEAN country is divided into two regions by the sea? 8. Which food you can chew but you can not swallow and which one you can swallow but you can not chew? Answers: 1. Kobe 2. Singapore 3. rhinoceros 1 4. Christopher Columbus 5. Venus 6. buffalo 7. Malaysia 8. water - Asks Ss copy down their books 2. Pre- (10’) - Introduces some new words for Ss by poster  New words Horn (n): a part, pointed on the head an animal Snout (n): pointed front, above the mouth Rhinoceros (n): con tê giác (picture) Logo (n): Biểu tượng ( picture) Swallow (v): make or let pass down one’s throat chew (v): work (food etc) between teeth Extensive (a): large, a lot Tail (n): hindmost part of an animal’s body Ancient (a) : very old - Revision of relative pronouns and clauses. - Helps Ss to review relative clauses and pronouns definition of relative pronouns and asks them to give some examples to make sure that they understand the use of relative clauses. Example: 1: I bought a new type writer. It cost me a lot of money. -> …… 2: Tom is one of my closest friends. He is very intelligent. -> ……. 3. While- (20’) Exercise 1/ page 81 - Asks Ss to use relative pronouns "who, which, that" to answer the questions on page 81. Start with the words given like the example: The city which was struck by a huge earthquake in 1995 in Japan is Kobe. - Tell Ss to compare their answers with a friend. - Call on some Ss to read their whole sentences. - Feedback and give correct answers by poster. Answers: b. The country which won the 1995 tiger cup is Singapore. c. The animal which has one or two horns on its snout is rhinoceros. d. The explorer who discovered America is Christopher Columbus. e. The planet which is closest to the earth is venues 2 f. The animal which was chosen to be the logo of SEA games 2003 is the buffalo. g. The ASEAN country which is divided into 2 regions by the sea is Malaysia. h. The food which you can chew but you cannot swallow is the chewing gum, and the thing you can swallow but you cannot chew is water. Exercise 2/ page 81,82 - Keeps Ss in pairs but with another partner. - Asks Ss to match each of the sentences in column A with a related sentence in column B use the suitable relative pronouns to join the two sentences. - Calls on some pairs to read the answers and go to the board to write. - Corrects the mistakes if necessary. * Answer: 2.g: It snow……. Exercise 3/ page 82 - Instructs Ss to do exercise 3. Underline the relative clause in the sentence, and then add commas to separate the non- defining relative clause from the rest of the sentence. - Writes all the sentences on the sub-board. - - Call on some Ss to do the task. - Comments and give correct answers Answers: b. Kangaroos, which come from Australia, have long tails. c. Ba, who lives in Trang Tien street, likes playing the guitar. d. (defining) e. Neil Armstrong, who first walked on the moon, live in the 3 USA. f. (defining) g. Miss Lien, who sings very well, is my English teacher. - Asks Ss copy down their books. 4. Post- (5) - Has Ss rewrite the sentences in language focus 3 exercise on page 82 - Asks Ss to replace each underline clause with their own clause - Lets Ss use facts or their imagination - Corrects the mistakes if necessary. Ex: a. Vietnam, which is a small country, exports rice. b. Kangaroos, which are called “Chuột túi“in Vietnamese, have long tails. c. Ba, who is my best friend, likes playing the guitar. e. Neil Armstrong, who is a famous astronaut , lived in USA g. Miss Lien ,who teaches us English , is a beautiful woman 5.
