LESSON PLAN Unit 16: Historical places E. Language focus: SUPERLATIVES  Class details : A class of 10 t h graders  Time allotted : 45 minutes  Aim : to help Ss learn and practice structures of superlatives  Objectives : By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - master structures of superlatives - use superlatives to compare more than two things/2 people accurately  Teaching aids and materials : textbook, board, colorful chalk, poster and realia  Anticipated problems : Some Ss may be confused with two-syllable adjectives used as short ones (friendly, simple, clever, narrow, quiet…) Timing Stages Activities Work arrangement 4 ms. Warm-up Game : SHARK ATTACK - T catches Ss’ attention and asks Ss to play the game. - T crosses 12 dashes on the board: - - - - - - - - - - - - - T draws on the board: T-whole class 1 - T gives instructions: “Here I have a word with 12 letters. Ss, guess the letters to find out the word. If you guess correctly, the girl will sit here (at the beginning position). If your guess is incorrectly, the girl will fall down one step. When the girl falls down the last step, you will lose the game. Remember that after guessing 4 correct letters, you can give the key word”. - T checks Ss’ understanding: + What are you going to do first? (expected answer: guess the letters ) + How many steps will the girl fall down if you guess incorrectly? ( expected answer: one) + After guessing 4 correct letters, can you give the key word? ( expected answer: Yes) T asks Ss to start the game.  Answer key : SUPERLATIVES 12ms. Presentation  Situation 1: - T shows the realia (3 clocks with different color: blue, pink and black). - T asks Ss: + Is the black clock smaller than the blue one? (expected answer: Yes, it is) + Is the blue clock smaller than the pink one? (expected answer: the) + T continues to point to the word “most” and asks Ss: What is this? (expected answer: most) + T points to “expensive” and asks the whole class: . Is it an adjective/noun? (expected answer: an adjective) . How many syllables does it have? (expected answer: three) . Thus, do we call it a short adjective or a long adjective? (expected answer: a long adjective) - T writes the superlative form of 4 long adjectives on the board: Form : - T elicits the use: T asks Ss: do we use this structure to compare more than two things or two people with long adjectives? (expected answer: Yes) - T writes on the board: Usage : to compare more than 2 things/2 people with long adjectives - T asks Ss to copy into their notebooks. - T pastes the poster on the board: Notes: 1. Short adjectives ending in “- e”, only add “-st”: wide  widest nice  nicest large  largest 2. One-syllable adjectives ending in one vowel + one consonant, double that consonant before adding “-est”: big  biggest hot  hottest thin  thinnest 3. Short adjectives ending in a consonant + y, change y to i before adding “-est”: dry  driest 4. Two-syllable adjectives ending in “-y”, “-le”, “-er”, “-et”, “-ow” are considered as short adjectives: happy  happiest simple  simplest clever  cleverest 5 the + most + long adj quiet  quietest narrow  narrowest 5. Practice  Drill: (Cues used for the drill are on Appendix) - Step 1 : + T shows the first cue. + T asks: Ss, do you know Phu Si/ Everest/Kilimanjaro mountain? (expected answer: Yes/No) + T says the utterance “Everest is the highest mountain.” as a model for Ss 3 times. - Step 2 : T gets Ss to repeat the above utterance chorally 2 or 3 times. - Step 3 : T calls 2 or 3 Ss to repeat it individually and corrects. - Step 4 : T continues to work on the second cue: + T asks Ss: . What is this? (T points to picture 1) (expected answer: kitchen) . How about this? (T points to picture 2) (expected answer: living room) . And the last one? ((T points to picture 3) (expected answer: bedroom) T-whole class 6 + T says the utterance from words given in the second cue: “Bedroom is the most spacious.” 3 times. + T gets the whole class to repeat it 2 or 3 times. + T calls 2 or 3 Ss to repeat it individually and corrects. - Step 5 : Work through the rest of the cues (6 ones): new cue, new S: + T shows the cue. + T asks S to read aloud the sentence and corrects. - Step 6 : Exchange + T shows the first cue again. + T calls a good S (S1) to do the exchange with the T: T: Is Everest the highest mountain? S1: Yes. Everest is the highest mountain. S1: Is Everest the highest mountain? T: Yes. Everest is the highest mountain. + T reminds Ss to look carefully at the pictures and information given to answer “Yes/ No”+ a full sentence. - Step 7 : OPEN PAIRS: T gets 3 or 4 pairs to demonstrate the exchange in Open pairs and then T corrects. Cue 8 : Seoul is the coldest city.  Further practice: Game : LUCKY NUMBERS - T divides class into two teams (A and B). - T puts the poster on the board: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 - T gives instructions: + Here I have 9 numbers (with 2 lucky T-whole class 8 numbers). + Each team will take turn to choose a number: . If the number is a lucky one, you will certainly get 2 points and continue to choose next number. . If not, you have to put the words given in the number in the correct order to make sentences or questions. With a correct answer, you will get 2 points. If you are wrong, the other team will have right to answer and get 1 point for the correct answer. + The team with more points will be the winner and receive a gift. - T checks Ss’ understanding: + T: What do you do first? Use SUPERLATIVES to give reasons for your choice. - T says: Here is some information about the three advertised houses. - T pastes a poster of three houses on the advertisement (See Appendix) on the board. - T gives instructions: Class, work in pairs. Study the three houses carefully to give your choice.
