G G i i á á o o á á n n t t i i ế ế n n g g v v ă ă n n 1 1 0 0 Unit 3: People's background Period 16: Lesson 16: Language focus * Aims : Distinguish the sounds / e / - / æ / Learning how to use past perfect , past simple. * Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to : - Pronounce the two sounds / e / - / æ / correctly. - Use the past perfect tense appropriately & distinguish it with the simple past tense. * Skills: Speaking – Listening – Reading – Writing. * Methods: Communicative approach * Teaching aids : Textbook, handout,… * Procedure : Content Activities I. Preliminary activities : + Greetings : Good afternoon. How are you today? II. Warm up : Check homework. III. New lesson 1.Presentation A/ Pronunciation : The vowels / e / - / æ / pen apple / e / / æ / * / e / is a short sound * / æ / is a long sound; first pronounce the sound / e / then open your mouth a little more. Practice reading the T: Raises the Qs. T & Ss correct their work. - 2 Ss do the task on board. - T: Show the things & raises the Qs. (?) What’s this? (?) B/ Grammar. Set the scene: e.g - do homework - watch a football match on TV. To link the ideas, we say: - Last night I had done homework before I watched a football match on TV. - I had watched the football match, I went to bed. Form. pronounce. Then practice in groups. - Asks Ss to practice reading & try to identify the two sounds in the sentences. - T: Ask Ss to write out two activities they did before going to bed last night. - Have two Ss write on board. (+) S + had + P2 + O (-) S + had not( hadn’t) + P2 + O. (?) Had + S +P2 + O ? (+) Yes, S + had. ( -) No, S + hadn’t Use. The past perfect can be used to describe: + an action before a pint of time in the past. E.g: I had done all my homework before 7 p.m last night. + an action that happened before another past action. E.g: I had done all my homework before I watched TV. - T: Asks Ss to review the past perfect tense. - Encourages Ss to recall the knowledge they’ve learnt. - Asks Ss to do the task. - Ss do the task. - T: Have Ss compare their answers with a friend. Make sure all the 2. Practice. Exercise 1( P.39) Use the verbs in brackets in past perfect tense. 1. had broken 6. had been 2.had done 7. had left 3. had met 8. had moved 4. had not turned off 9. had not seen 5. had ever seen 10. had broken in verbs have been put in the correct form. - Calls on some Ss to read aloud their answers in front of the class. - Feedback & gives correct answers. - Try to recall the knowledge of past perfect tense. - T: Asks Ss to do the task in groups of 4 or 5. Take notes. - T: Helps Ss distinguish Exercise 2( P.40) Past perfect >< Past simple Identify the past simple & the past perfect tense. E.g: - I did my homework last night. - Last night I had done all my homework before I went to bed . * Past perfect used for 1 st action. * Past simple used for 2 nd action. Expected answers: 1,. had just finished – came 2. had seldom traveled – went 3. went – had already taken 4. Did you manage – had he gone the two tenses. G/W - Study sentence by sentence & do the task. - T: Have some Ss display on board. Others compare their work with their friends. - Feedback & give the correct answers. 5. had just got – phoned – had been Exercise 3 (P.40) Error correction. Expected answers. Sentence Mistake Correction 1 had climbed climbed 3 had turned turned 5 had called called 7 had heard heard - Asks Ss to read the story carefully& work in pairs to find 5 mistakes in the use of tenses in the story. - Recall the use of the two tenses. - T: Have them join another pair to make a group & compare the answers. - Calls on some Ss to explain their answers in front of the class . - Feedback & give correction. - Work in groups to do the task.
