With a need for new business models to future proof the sector, ensuring equitable economic growth as well as sustainability can only be achieved by innovating and embracing new alliances. With this in mind, OMC 2023 is the premier platform for the region’s energy authorities, industry CEO’s, contractors, research institutions and consumers to assess the practical policy, technical and financial steps needed to evolve the Mediterranean energy sector to embrace, meet and exceed the COP26 accords. The Mediterranean energy scenario and transition toward a lower carbon future revolves around the outcomes of COP26 and the hopes of COP27. With the sector now embracing the change needed as well as forging new partnerships amongst industry allies to accelerate energy transition, partnerships between energy producers as well as the growing manufacturing industry of the region are just some of the issues that the OMC 2023 conference will tackle. The COP26 outcomes and COP27 aims are specifically targeted to aid the transformation of the global economy and with cutting edge innovation as well as practical and applied solutions, the global energy landscape looks set to dramatically change in the coming years. To support this admirable goal, we will work closely with industry, academia, policy makers and financiers as well as startups and SMEs to address the challenges that affect us all. 2 “It is now time to turn commitments into actions” Climate change has been on the international agenda for a long time, with the UN SDGs making social, economic and environmental sustainability central to economic development. Unfortunately, the impacts of the pandemic cast a shadow on achieving the emissions targets as scheduled having reduced incomes, cut government and companies budgets worldwide. This has contributed to widening the gap between developed and developing countries. Climate change is no doubt the priority. The last Cop26 summit intended to strengthen the global commitment and draw the world’s attention on the urgency of taking more stringent actions to achieve decarbonization by 2050. A change of pace is mandatory: it is time to turn commitments into actions. These include smart and targeted policies, appropriate investments and innovative technologies to be urgently implemented to transition value chains in the near future and, in particular the hard to abate and energy intensive sectors, to reduce the adverse effects of climate change. A long list of commitments was drafted by all stakeholders attending the summit. In order to meet them an integrated approach and close cooperation at every level become imperative to progress action on everything from standards, finance, methane and more, showing that an economy-wide mobilisation is emerging. The summit also pointed out a need of transformation in citizens and consumers’ behaviour. OMC 2023 promises to continue and further develop the debate on energy transition and sustainable development. After rethinking energy we are now focusing on reshaping the energy industry: translating ideas into actions. For this reason OMC will continue gathering diverse stakeholders to debate on aligned goals and co-operate to put solutions into practice backed up by cross-sector partnerships. The next conference in May is investigating the evolving energy landscape after Cop26 and the specific transition challenges facing the different countries of the Mediterranean region, how companies can transform their business to take on the challenges of resilient growth and decarbonization. We will focus on sector coupling as an example of real alliance amongst industry sectors, discuss about the energy vectors of the future – Hydrogen, Nuclear, current CCUS achievements, the partnerships between producers and the hard to abate manufacturing industry. Strongly motivated by the astonishing success at the last edition, the innovation room is hosting startups, SMEs, young professionals, University researchers and students working closely on projects that span across the energy industry and business, giving them all the opportunity to show their great potential to reshape the energy industry of the forthcoming decades.
