LU−1 LUBRICATION − OIL AND FILTER OIL AND FILTER INSPECTION LU060−04 CHECK ENGINE OIL QUALITY Check the oil for deterioration, entry of water, discoloring or thinning If the quality is visibly poor, replace the oil Oil grade: API grade SH, Energy − Conserving II multigrade engine oil or ILSAC multigrade engine oil Recommended viscosity is as shown in the illustration CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL The oil level should be between the ”L” and ”F” marks on the dipstick If low, check for leakage and add oil up to ”F” mark Oil Pressure Gauge S01260 REMOVE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH, AND INSTALL OIL PRESSURE GAUGE WARM UP ENGINE Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature CHECK OIL PRESSURE Oil pressure: At idle 29 kPa (0.3 kgf/cm2, 4.3 psi) or more At 3,000 rpm 245 − 490 kPa (2.5 − 5.0 is exposed to used engine oil Protective clothing and gloves that cannot be penetrated by oil should be worn The skin should be thoroughly washed with soap and water, or use water−less hand cleaner, to remove any used engine oil Do not use gasoline, thinners, or solvents S In order to preserve the environment, used oil and used oil filters must be disposed of only at designated disposal sites (a) BODY CLEARANCE Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the driven rotor and body Standard body clearance: 0.10 − 0.16 mm (0.0039 − 0.0063 in.) Maximum body clearance: 0.20 mm (0.0079 in.) If the body clearance is greater than maximum, replace the rotors as a set If necessary, replace the oil pump assembly INSPECT ROTOR TIP CLEARANCE Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the drive and driven rotor tips Standard tip clearance: 0.04 − 0.16 mm (0.0016 − 0.0063 in.) Maximum tip clearance: 0.20 mm (0.0079 in.) B: 35 mm (1.38 in.) (a) (b) INSTALL CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Install the crankshaft position sensor with the bolt Torque: 8.8 N·m (90 kgf·cm, 78 in.·lbf) Connect the connector to the generator drive belt adjusting bar S01599 (a) SST S01633 1996 RAV4 (RM447U) INSTALL OIL PUMP PULLEY Align the cutouts of the pulley and shaft, and slide on the pulley (b) Using SST, install the pulley nut SST 09960−10010 (09962−01000, 09963−00600) Torque: 24 N·m (245 kgf·cm, 18 ft·lbf) INSTALL CRANKSHAFT TIMING PULLEY AND NO.2 IDLER PULLEY (See page EM−20) INSTALL TIMING BELT (See page EM−20) REMOVE ENGINE SLING DEVICE Remove the engine hanger No.1 LU−15 LUBRICATION − OIL PUMP P04349 INSTALL OIL PAN BAFFLE PLATE AND OIL STRAINER Install a new gasket, the oil strainer and baffle plate with the bolts and nuts Torque: 5.4 N·m (55 kgf·cm, 48 in.·lbf) INSTALL OIL PAN (a) Remove any old packing (FIPG) material and be careful not to drop any oil on the contact surfaces of the oil pan and cylinder block S Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the old packing (FIPG) material from the gasket surfaces and sealing groove S Thoroughly clean all components to remove all the loose material S Using a non−residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces NOTICE: Do not use a solvent which will affect the painted surfaces (b) Apply seal packing to the oil pan as shown in the illustration Seal packing: Part No.08826−00080 or equivalent S Install a nozzle that has been cut to a 3−5 mm (0.12 − 0.20 in.) opening S Parts must be assembled within minutes of application Otherwise the material must be removed and reapplied S Immediately remove nozzle from the tube and reinstall cap (c) Install the oil pan with 17 bolts and nuts Torque: 5.4 N·m (55 kgf·cm, 48 in.·lbf) Install the dipstick Seal Width C A B A B C 5mm (0.20 in.)
