251982and1995,andsurgicallysterilizedwomenrarelyusefamilyplanningservicesaftertheiroperations.Thesetrends,alongwiththepotentialeffectsofchangesinquestionwordingin1995,deservefurtherdetailedstudy.Inthe12monthsbeforethe1995interview,33percentreceivedbirthcontrol/familyplanningservices;27percentreceivedabirthcontrolmethod,15percentbirthcontrolcounseling,and22percentacheckuportestrelatedtobirthcontrol(table73).About62percentofwomenreportedreceivingaPapsmearand61percentreceivedapelvicexaminthelast12months.Thisissimilartofindingsin1988(32).Thepercentsreceivingotherservicesweremuchlower:16percentreceivedapregnancytest,17percentanHIVtest,8percentothersexuallytransmitteddisease(STD)testsortreatment,and21percentatestortreatmentforaninfection(table74).About34millionwomenreceivedfamilyplanningorrelatedreproductivehealthservicesfromprivatedoctorsorhealthmaintenanceorganizations(HMO)in1995.About15millionwomen,includingsomeofthesamewomen,receivedtheseservicesfromothersources—forexample,publicfamilyplanningclinics,otherclinics,andhospitals.Womenwhousedtheseothersourcestendedtohavelowerincomes.Forexample,only15percentofwomen22–44yearsofagewhousedaprivatedoctororHMOhadincomelessthan150percentofthepovertylevelcomparedwith46percentofthosewhousedpublicfamilyplanningclinics—athreefolddifference(table80).CigaretteSmokingAbout28percentofwomen15–44yearsofagewerecurrentcigarettesmokersin1995,and14percentwereformersmokers(table84).ThesefindingsaresimilartothosefromtheNHIS(31).Theproportionwhocurrentlysmokewasnearlyfourtimesashighamongwomenwithlessthanahighschooleducation(47percent
