and Windows 2000 Web services Lead-in Internet Information Services 5.0 is a key component of Windows 2000 Web services Role of Web Servers in Organizations IIS Features IIS Platforms IIS in an Active Directory Domain *****************************ILLEGAL FOR NON-TRAINER USE****************************** Internet Information Services is a key component of Windows 2000 Web services Before you can effectively implement and administer an IIS Web server, you need a thorough understanding of IIS features The specific IIS features that are available on a Web server will depend on the Windows 2000 operating system on which the Web server is running, and whether the Web server is a member of an Active Directory™ services domain Some of the questions that this topic answers are: When does a business need a Web server? What are the features of Internet Information Services 5.0? What are the advantages of using the different Windows 2000 operating systems? What additional features are available if the Web server is a member of an Active Directory™ domain? Module 1: Installing Internet Information Services 5.0 Role of Web Servers in Organizations Topic Objective To discuss the role of Web servers in businesses and other organizations Web Server Lead-in Does your business or organization need a Web server? Intranet www.nwtraders.msft www.nwtraders.msft Internet www.contoso.msft www.contoso.msft *****************************ILLEGAL FOR NON-TRAINER USE****************************** Does your organization need a Web server? If you want to provide information to your employees quickly and dynamically over an intranet, or you want to establish a presence on the Internet, your organization needs a Web server Delivery Tip Focus on the uses of a Web server in a business environment Ask the students for examples of how their companies use Web servers Establishing an IIS Web server with Windows 2000 allows you to create Web sites, which can provide easily accessible information for employees and customers, and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) sites, which allow people to download large files fast With IIS and Windows 2000, you can also create and effectively manage multiple Web sites on a single Web server Creating Sites on an Intranet By moving your internal business processes (such as payroll or procurement) from paper-based systems to an intranet, you can dramatically streamline operations If you make tasks and information available from a central intranet location and accessible from a common browser interface, your employees can spend less time learning procedures, filling out forms, and handling routine paperwork, which will result in reduced labor costs and improved efficiency Module 1: Installing Internet Information Services 5.0 Creating Sites on the Internet An Internet presence allows your business to serve its customers online By providing contact information, answers to frequently asked questions, and details about products and services, for example, you can achieve greater customer satisfaction You can also create e-commerce sites for your organization, enabling customers to purchase products and check order status over the Internet Windows 2000 interoperates with existing systems so that you can efficiently manage operations behind the scenes, such as managing suppliers and shippers, collecting payments, and collecting and managing customer information that helps you tailor your offerings to suit individual buyers You can also use the Web services in Windows 2000 to let your employees work with documents in the same way on the Internet that they on your internal network IIS includes support for the Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) standard, which lets IIS work as both a Web server and a file server With support for drag-and-drop Web publishing and file sharing, users can work with Web documents in the same way that they work with files on their local hard drive or the network Hosting Multiple Web Sites With its greatly improved scalability and new management options, the Web services in Windows 2000 let you support thousands of separate Web sites on a single server For Your Information In testing, Windows 2000 Server runs effectively with over 5,000 Web sites Why would your organization need more than one Web site? You may want to host a separate site for each product or functional division in your organization Some companies, which are known as Internet Service Providers (ISPs), make a business of hosting sites for other people and organizations ISPs have demanding requirements for Web services For any organization that hosts multiple Web sites on a single server, the improvements in Windows 2000 Web services are particularly beneficial 16 Module 1: Installing Internet Information Services 5.0 Unattended Windows Component Installation If you are performing a Windows component installation, you can change the default installation path for IIS by creating an answer file that uses the same format as the Unattend.txt file in the previous procedure To change the default installation paths for Web and FTP roots during an unattended component installation: Create an answer file to be accessed during the unattended component installation This file follows the same format as the Unattend.txt file Include a Components and an InternetServer section in the answer file For example: [Components] iis_common = on iis_inetmgr = on iis_www = on iis_ftp = on iis_htmla = on [InternetServer] PathFTPRoot=D:\Inetpub\Ftproot PathWWWRoot=D:\Inetpub\Wwwroot Start the installation of the FTP or Internet Information Services components by using the Sysocmgr.exe command For example, if the answer file that you created in step was named Iis.txt, the command line to execute the installation would be: sysocmgr /i: %windir%\inf\sysoc.inf /u:c:\iis.txt Note For more information about unattended setup, see "Microsoft Windows 2000 Guide to Unattended Setup." This document can be found on the Windows 2000 installation compact disc To view it, extract the Unattend.doc file from Deploy.cab in the \Support\Tools folder Module 1: Installing Internet Information Services 5.0 17 Lab A: Installing IIS to a Custom Location Topic Objective To introduce the lab Lead-in In this lab, you will uninstall IIS and then reinstall it using an unattended component installation *****************************ILLEGAL FOR NON-TRAINER USE****************************** Objectives After completing this lab, you will be able to: Uninstall IIS Install IIS using an unattended component installation Scenario You are setting up a new computer to be a Web server for your organization The computer already has the default installation of IIS However, you have determined that you would prefer the Web site’s data files to reside on drive D To accomplish this, you will remove the default installation of IIS and use an answer file to install the files on drive D during an unattended component installation Estimated time to complete this lab: 15 minutes 18 Module 1: Installing Internet Information Services 5.0 Exercise Uninstalling IIS Goal In this exercise, you will use the Windows Components Wizard to uninstall IIS This exercise prepares you for the next exercise, in which you will install IIS to a custom location Tasks Log on as Administrator with a password of password, open Windows Explorer, and then examine the contents of C:\Inetpub Detailed steps a Log on as Administrator with a password of password b On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer c In Windows Explorer, expand My Computer, expand Local Disk (C:), and then click Inetpub What folders exist under C:\Inetpub? explain how to update IIS after installation Lead-in You may need to apply updates to IIS after it is installed Updates to IIS Service pack Hotfix Scripting engine update FPSE service release Locating Security Updates Using the Hotfix Checking Tool *****************************ILLEGAL FOR NON-TRAINER USE****************************** As with most software products, there are changes to IIS that were not available at the time that the product was released You must be aware of the types of updates that can be applied to IIS and where to locate them Updates to IIS The primary types of updates that you might need to apply to IIS are service packs, hotfixes, scripting engine updates, and FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) service releases Service pack A service pack is a collection of patches, fixes, and minor upgrades for a specific version of a product, such as a Microsoft Windows operating system product A service pack is not the same as a decimal release, such as an upgrade from version 4.0 to version 4.01 Service packs for each product are generally cumulative For example, if you apply Service Pack to a product, you normally don’t need to apply Service Packs and first, because Service Pack includes the fixes and upgrades in Service Packs and Hotfix A hotfix is a patch to a very specific component of the software These patches are released as required to quickly fix bugs between service pack releases A service pack includes the appropriate hotfixes that have been made available since the previous service pack 22 Module 1: Installing Internet Information Services 5.0 Scripting engine update The scripting engine is used in a number of different products (for example, IIS and Microsoft Internet Explorer) Scripting engines are developed by a separate group within Microsoft and have a different release schedule than the other components of the server When the scripting engine is updated, you will find scripting engine updates available on the Microsoft Web site Applying new scripting engines can correct security problems and give new capabilities to Web developers You can locate the most current information about scripting at http://msdn.microsoft.com/scripting/ For Your Information Applying FPSE service releases is explained in more detail in Module 8, “Managing FrontPageExtended Webs,” in Course 2295A, Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.0 FPSE Service Release New releases for FPSE are made available to correct bugs and security vulnerabilities To ensure secure and smooth operation of your FrontPage Web sites, be sure to update server extensions to the most current service release Locating Security Updates The most important software updates to apply are those that impact security You can find the most current information about product security on the Microsoft TechNet Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/ At that site, you can also subscribe to the Microsoft Security Notification Service, which is a free e-mail notification service that informs subscribers about the security of Microsoft products Using the Hotfix Checking Tool The Hotfix Checking Tool for IIS enables you to ensure that your servers are up to date on all security patches When the tool finds a patch that has not been installed, it can display a dialog or write a warning to the event log You can run the tool continuously or periodically, against the local machine or a remote one, by using either a database on the Microsoft Web site or a locally hosted copy You can also schedule the tool to run at desired intervals by using Task Scheduler To download the Windows 2000 IIS Hotfix Checking Tool, go to the Microsoft TechNet Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools.asp/ Important If you have applied any hotfixes to your IIS installation and then reinstall IIS, you will need to edit the registry before using the Hotfix Checking Tool The installation will overwrite the files installed with a hotfix, but it does not delete the hotfix entries in the registry database The Hotfix Checking Tool examines the registry entries Before you reinstall IIS, delete the IIS hotfix entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix to prevent this problem Module 1: Installing Internet Information Services 5.0 23 Lab B: Updating IIS Topic Objective To introduce the lab Lead-in In this lab, you will update IIS with a service pack, a scripting engine update, and a hotfix
