The University of Queensland (UQ) awarded an $800,000 contract for a Cat6 solution for the joint UQ/CSIRO biotechnology building to KRONE Australia. Of necessity, universities lead the way as adopters of new technologies and UQ is no different. It was among the first Australian educational institutions to offer courses on biotechnology, the applied science that studies the cells of plants, animals and microbes to develop products and processes to improve our daily lives. At present, UQ's Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) - its courses, staff and students - are spread across a number of buildings on St Lucia Campus. It is UQ's aim to house them in the one building by the end of 2002. The new joint UQ/CSIRO building where the IMB will be located requires a communications network infrastructure with the highest possible bandwidth to enable new and emerging technologies such as videoconferencing, video streaming, and the sophisticated imaging and data processing systems used in this rapidly advancing science. " We've been working towards this goal for almost two years now," said Derek Browning, Supervisor Network Installation and Maintenance, University of Queensland. " It has taken 18 months to construct the two, eight-storey buildings, which include lecture theatres, an auditorium and facilities for distance learning. The project is a joint venture between the University and the CSIRO who will share our facilities to conduct its own biotechnical research. " When the first designs for the building were developed several years ago, Cat5e was the next proposed standard and we were already running 100 Megabit to the desktop over a Gigabit Ethernet backbone. It is imperative that we provide the best cabling infrastructure for our future needs. " CSIRO has contributed a significant portion of the funding for the project as well as providing its cabling infrastructure specifications to use as a basis for our own network design," said Mr. Browning. KRONE Australia won the tender for the UQ cabling infrastructure project from strong competition from two other vendors. " We're using KRONE's Premis NET ® Cat 6 solution of cable, connectors and patch panels as well as KRONE fibre pigtails, connectors and patch panels," said Mr. Browning. "The value of this part of the project is estimated to be around $800,000." " KRONE's Queensland team worked closely with us to ensure we gain the maximum benefit from our Premis NET ® solution," said Mr. Browning. "They have been extremely helpful in responding to our queries on a number of occasions." Glen Johnston, KRONE's Manager, Marketing and Product Development said: " The University of Queensland has been a long-time customer of KRONE, through many tender processes. We are particularly excited that they have chosen us again, against all comers. In fact, the new biotechnology building is the second University of Queensland building to adopt a Premis NET Cat 6 solution. The General Purpose North 3 building was completed earlier this year. " In choosing our Premis NET structured cabling solution, the University receives the industry's most extensive standards-compliant warranty program that guarantees the system's performance for up to 20 years. It is a fully comprehensive product, system and applications warranty that includes all parts, labour and service." The redevelopment of the site at St Lucia is an ongoing process, demanded by the age of some of the older buildings but restricted by the size of the site. " Over the years, we have used KRONE solutions in other areas of the St Lucia campus and, as existing buildings are refurbished or rebuilt, we will certainly be asking the KRONE team to tender for major projects," said Mr. Browning. " To date they have won our business because of product performance and reliability and competitive pricing." About the University of Queensland Founded in 1909, the University of Queensland is the State's oldest higher education institution with approximately 4,500 staff, 30,000 students and 5,500 courses across three campuses - at St Lucia, Gatton and Ipswich. Established as the primary campus in 1948, St Lucia is located on a 115-hectare site in the picturesque inner-city suburb of St Lucia, bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides. As well as Queensland's most extensive multimedia library, state-of-the-art laboratories and lecture theatres, the campus houses 2,000 students in ten residential colleges. On-campus facilities include extensive world-class sporting venues, a shopping arcade, banks, post office, cinema, theatre, restaurants, refectories and recreation precincts. Many of the gracious sandstone buildings are more than 50 years old.
