Reading 3: Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in Groot-Zundert,near Breda, in the Netherlands, where he spent his childhood. He was a difficult child, who grew into an unhappy young man. He started painting in the early 1880s. The paintings that he produced during this period are very dark and serious. They show simple people living in the poverty of life at that time. Van Gogh had a younger brother, Theo, who had move to Paris to become an art dealer. In 1886 Van Gogh went to paris, where he studied the French Impressionist paiters and started to use brighter colours in his paintings. In 1888 he move to Arles, in the South of France, where he developed his own style of painting: ordinary subjects in brilliant, bold colours. His painting from this time are all quite realistic and seem to be from one of the happiness times of his life. Although Van Gogh’s time in Arles started happily, thing soon went wrong. After some months he invited the painter Gauguin, who he had met in Paris, to join him in Arles. They soon started having violent arguments and after one of these, Van Gogh started to show more signs of insanity and was sent to a special hospital. He continued to paint, but some people think his paintings from this period he went into the fields and shot himself. He died two days later. Van Gogh is one of the most famous painters in modern art. In 1998 one of his paintings was sold for £44 million (about $65 million). However, during his short and tragic life Van Gogh received little recognition and sold only one painting in the total of 750 paintings that he produced and he was not recognized as a great painter.
