Lab 8.2.1: Logging on to Windows 2000 Estimated time: 10 minutes Objective In this exercise, the student will learn how to log on to Windows 2000. Equipment: The following equipment is required for this exercise: • A computer running Windows 2000 Professional Background The option to “Log on to Windows 2000 Professional” must be enabled in order to give users the ability to log on to either a network domain or a local computer. The logon process is the main component of security for the Windows 2000 operating system. It defines who is accessing the computer and its network resources. It also specifies the rights and permissions the user has for accessing these resources. Procedures In this lab, the student will log on to the local computer using the local administrator password. Logging on to the local computer as administrator will give the student full administrative control of this computer, but the student will not have access to any network resources. The student will have to log on to the domain using a domain user account in order to have access to network resources. Step 1: Log on to the Local Computer 1.
