Objectives By the end of the lesson students will be able to: - Develop such reading micro- skills as scanning for specific information and guessing meaning in context. - Use the information they have to read to talk about New York City. B. Teaching aids Textbook, posters. C. Language focus - Understanding new words/ expressions in context. - Deciding on True or False statements. - Passage comprehension. D. Procedure Teacher’s activities Time Students’ activities Aids Warm up Matching -T asks Ss to match the name of cities with the name of countries. Countries: 1. China 2. England 3. USA 4. Thailand 5’ -Ss work inpairs. -Ss give answers 1-d, 2-e, 3-c, 4-a, 5-b Poster 5. Vietnam Cities: a. Bangkok b. Hanoi c. Texas d. Shanghai e. London -T calls on some Ss to answer. -T gives the correct answers: 1-d, 2-e, 3-c, 4-a, 5-b. -T introduces new lesson: unit 15: Cities- A- Reading. Ss work invidually I- Before you read -T gets Ss to work in pairs and match the pictures in the textbook with the correct places. -T checks that Ss have the right answers. -T gives the correct answers: 1- The Empire State Building.(a) 2- The United Nations Headquarters. (b) 3- Central Park.(d) 4- Times Square.(c) -T asks Ss to answer the questions. 1. Where is New York? 2. What do you know about the city? -T calls on some Ss to answer. -T gives suggestion answers: 1. New York is in New York State. 2. It is the most populous city in the United State. 5’ -Ss work in pairs. -Ss answer 1-a, 2-b, 3-d, 4-c. Textbook II- While you read 1.New words * To be located in: nằm ở. * To found: sáng lập, thành lập. * Global finance: tài chính thế giới. * To be characterised by: có đặc điểm là. 5’ Whole class Textbook -T reads aloud new words and calls on some Ss to read. 2.Task1: Matching words in A with their definitions in B. -T gets Ss to read the passage silently and then do task 1. -T asks Ss to go back to the passage to locate and read these words so that they can guess their meanings. -T calls on some Ss to give the answers. -T checks the answers with the whole class. 1-d, 2-c, 3-e, 4-a, 5-b. 3.Task 2: Decide whether the statements are true (T) or false (F). -T gets Ss to read through all the 5 questions and identify the key words in each question. -T gives an example: in question 1, these might be “name”, “state” and “city”. -T asks Ss read these words carefully to find the answers to the questions. -T asks Ss to work in pairs -T gets Ss to check their answers with a friend. -T calls on some Ss to present and explain their answers. -T gives feedback and correct answers: 1. T (lines 1-2) 2. F (“ .is ice-free all seasons, line 7) 3. T (it’s on the Hudson and Passaic rivers, lines 3-5) 4. T (“ it is home of the UN”, lines 18- 19) 5. Then Ss underline the key words to decide what information they need to find in the text. -T gets Ss to check their answers with a peer. -T calls on some Ss to write their answers on the board and ask them to explain their choices. -T gives the correct answers: 1. It is in the southeastern part of New York State ( lines 1-2). 2. 7 million people in the city and 19 million people in the metropolitan region ( lines 9-11). 3. Because it was founded by the Dutch and the capital of the Netherlands was Amsterdam ( lines 15-16). 4. It is the home of the UN and the centre of global finance, communications, and business ( lines 18-19). 5. III- After you read -T asks Ss to work in groups to discuss the question: If you could visit New York, which place (s) of interest there would you like to see? Why? -T calls on some group to present in front of class. -T gives feedback and a model answer: 5’ -Ss work in groups -Ss present in front of the class Texbook If I could visit New York, I would like to visit The Statue of Liberty because it is very beautiful and is one of the most typical symbol of New York.
