UNIT 10 RECYCLING PERIOD 61 LESSON 1 : GETTING STARTED LISTEN AND READ A / Aims and objectives : By the end of the lesson , Ss will be able to do something to protect the environment and save natural resources . B / Teaching aids : Textbook , posters , cassette , 6 flashcards , a chart … C / Procedure : I / Warm up : Brainstorming (Getting started) Reuse plastic bags - Ask Ss to think of ways to reduce the amount of garbage they produce . - Deliver posters to Ss , dividing them into 4 groups - Tell Ss to put the posters on the board after they finish and the team having the most good ideas is Group work of 4/5 teams Ways to reduce the amount of the winner . - Give feedback ( Use cloth bags , use tree leaves to wrap things , make garbage into fertilizer , make vegetable matter into animal food … )  Lead in to new lesson . II / Pre – reading : Introduce the topic of the passage reading and some new words to Ss . 1. Pre – teach vocabulary : - representative (n) = dai dien - to protect = to keep so/ sth safe from danger . -> to protect so / sth from so / sth - natural resource (n) : coal mines , oil / gold / mineral deposits - to recycle “ to make sth already used able to be used again . - to contact = to communicate with so by telephone or letter . -> Have Ss copy . * Checking technique : Jumbled words Individual - Stick 6 flashcards with jumbled words on the board - Ask Ss to rewrite the words in the right order . - Tell Ss the first two groups with right words will get 2 points . - Correct and give feedback contact – representative – resource natural – protect – recycle 2. True / false predictions - Set the scene “ A representative from Friends of the Earth , Miss Blake , is talking to the students of Quang Trung School . Reduce means buying the products which are over packed . 4. We can not reuse things like envelopes , glass , plastic bottles , old plastic bags . 5. Miss Blake says that we should use cloth bags and should not use plastic bags at all . 6. Recycling means not just throwing things away but trying and finding another use for them . - Ask Ss to work in pairs to decide if the statements are true or false . - Call on some Ss to read their guesses and write them on the board . II / While – reading : 1. Checking predictions Teacher – Ss - Ask Ss to open their books , listen to the tape while reading the dialogue . - Call on Ss to correct the false statements . - Give feedback 1. Objectives: - After the lesson Ss will be able to get acquainted with the new topic: the recycling. To review the words: reduce, reuse, and protect environment, packaging, and friend of the earth. II.Teaching aids , Tape and cassette,Textook + picture + posters. III. Teaching procedure. 1. Class organization 2 Oral test Answer the questions: a. what do you often do to protect the environment? b. Do you often participate in protecting? 1. New lesson. A. Getting started. Introduce the lesson; make the list of ways that help to reduce amout of garbage we produce. (Work in pairs) - Ask Ss to give their opinions. Example: We should use cloth bag instead of plastic bag. We shouldn’t buy things over packaged -Give some new words: Cloth bag: túi vải Plastic bag: túi nhựa Banana/ lotus leaves: chuối, hoa sen over packaged: đóng gói quá nhiều Throw away products; sản phẩm vứt đi sau khi dùng.Packaged; đóng gói -Ask Ss to read the new words in chorus. B. Pre- listening and reading. Introduce the topic of the lesson and ask Ss to give the representation of the logo in the text book ( p, 89 ) - Give some new words: - Reprentative : người đại diện Protect the environment; bảo vệ môi trường. Save natural resources: tiết kiệm nguồn nhiên liệu C. While- listening and reading - Play the tape. - Ask Ss to read the reading and in silent - Ask Ss to role play the reading. - Check the pronunciation if necessary. -Ask Ss to read the dialogue again and find out the questions.( Work in pairs) Answer: a. Reduce means not buying products which are over packaged. b. we can reuse things like envelopes, glass, plastic bottles and old plastic bags. c. Recycle means not just throwing things away. Try to find another use for them. d. We can look for information on recycling things by having a contact with an organization like Friends of the Earth, going to the local library, or asking your family and friends or scientific society. e. Mrs Blake tells Lan that we should not use plastic bags because they are difficult to be destroyed, so amount of garbage increases. - check if necessary D. Post- listening and reading. - Ask Ss to list the things that we do to increase the garbage. + Not throwing things away. + Reuse things. + Not buying things that are over packaged. - Ask Ss to work in pairs to write. - Read the sentences aloud. 2. Consolidation. Retell the main content of the lesson and give the way to redue the garbage. 3. Home work - Ask Ss to do the exercise 1 + 2 (p: 59) in the work book. Warm  up: – Drawing pictures appliances using electricity + dictating a text about careless Mary + Asking question “What should Mary do tomorrow to save energy?” – Talking / Discussing about the pictures on page 57 + Is the lighting fixture still burning? + Is the TV on? + Is cassette player on? + What happens to the faucets?  What should we do to save energy? 2.Pre  teach vocabulary: – Water bill (n) : hoá đơn tiền nước (realia) – Plumber (n) : thợ sửa chữa đường nước (explanation) Who is he ? Now, work in pairs and guess about the conversation between them. a) Mrs Ha is worried about her water bill. b) Mrs Mi gives Mrs Ha advice on how to save water. c) Mrs ha has checked the pipes in her house and found no cracks. d) Mrs Ha suggests getting some tools to check cracks in the pipes. e) Mrs Mi suggests taking showers to save water. She advised Mrs Ha to get a plumber to check her water pipes and to reduce the amount of water by taking shower and turning off faucets after (her) use. d. A dripping faucet can waste 500 liters of water a month. III.Post  reading: 1.Discussion (group work) – Topic: “What should we do to save energy at home and at school?” * Possible answer: – Taking a shower instead a bath – Turning off faucets after use – Turning off light/TV/cassette/… before leaving or when noone listen/watch it – Reducing lights – Using fluorescent lights/neon light (tube) instead of bulbs – Reducing using electricity appliances such as: TV, cassette, refrigerator, washing–machine, vacuum cleaner, dryer, iron… 2.Phrasal verbs : turn off (elicit from the text) - Ask students about the meaning, and to tell the phrasal verbs they’ve known. - Have students look at the phrasal verbs on p.63 (LF 2), check the meaning. - Get students to complete the sentences using the right tense form of the phrasal verbs in the box and the pictures *Key : a. look after her little sister (picture 1) b. go on (picture 2) c. turn on (picture 4) d. looked for (picture 3) e. turn off (picture 5) IV.
