(987) Engine 911 Carrera (997) & Boxster/Cayman (987) Engine Components Crankshaft – Boxster/S (987) In order to reduce weight on the crankshaft, the center bore is deeper on the flywheel side This results in a weight reduction of approx 0.6 lbs (0.3 kg) Crankcase – Cayman S (987) The crankcase concept, featuring a high level of component integration, separate crankshaft bearing with cast-in cast iron elements and Lokasil cylinder barrels, has been adopted from the 911 Carrera In order to reduce horsepower loss caused by compression of the air below the piston during downward movement, air passages (see arrow in 911 crankcase image) have been incorporated between the individual cylinders In order to attain a displacement of 3.4 liters, the 96 mm bore of the engine from the 911 Carrera has been combined with the 78 mm stroke of the engine from the Boxster This results in an extremely short stroke, which is conducive to true sports car performance Pistons – Boxster S (987) 3.2 The pistons of the Boxster S (987) have been reinforced in the area of the valve reliefs This results in a weight increase of 0.28 oz (8 g) The increased piston weight is offset by lighter wrist pins designed with a conical design and thinner walls Torsional Vibration Damper – 911 Carrera S (997) Crankcase – 911 Carrera S (997) The higher cylinder gas pressures in the 3.8 liter engine leads to torsional vibrations in the engine as a result of the transmissions of these forces via the pistons and the crankshaft drive (connecting rod and crankshaft) To reduce these torsional vibrations, the vibration damper material was changed from steel to aluminum The larger piston diameter in the 911 Carrera S (997) 3.8 liter engine displaces more air during the downward movement, the cross-sections of the connections between the individual cylinders have been increased Page 3.10 The previous 3.8 liter torsional vibration dampers were made from steel, which was a disadvantage since the heavy weight compromises revving ability and spontaneity To reduce this disadvantage, the 3.8 liter engine of the 911 Carrera S incorporates a torsional vibration damper made of aluminium This reduces the crankshaft drive's mass moment of inertia and enhances the engine's revving ability and spontaneous response 911 Carrera/Boxster/Cayman Engine Repair 911 Carrera (997) & Boxster/Cayman diameters for the intake and exhaust ports, the timing has been duly adapted to the modified gas exchange This enables high torque and power output combined with a smooth torque curve early/late 19° Boxster/Cayman (987) Engine Vacuum Pump Belt Drive – Boxster/S & Cayman/S (987) The 911 Carrera/S (997), Boxster/S and Cayman S (987) engines employ a mechanical vacuum pump instead of a conventional vacuum amplifier to provide the vacuum for the brake booster This pump is driven in tandem configuration together with the oil extraction pump of the left cylinder head of Boxster/Cayman engines (see arrow) and right cylinder head of 911 Carrera engines Boxster (987) and Boxster S (987) with manual transmissions feature tension and idler pulleys made of plastic in order to reduce weight This results in a weight reduction of approx 1.1 lbs (0.5 kg) It has not been possible to implement this change on vehicles with Tiptronic, due to the different mass on the power output side of Tiptronic vehicles in comparison to vehicles with manual transmission, which would result in vibration and subsequent noise Belt Service Life – 911 Carrera/S (997), Boxster/S & Cayman/S (987) On the basis of the excellent service life with the belt drive, Porsche has extended the replacement interval from 48,000 miles (80,000 km) to 60,000 miles (90,000 km) Notes: This design enables a high and constant level of vacuum supply and subsequent effective brake boost even when the most unfavorable underlying conditions apply, e.g low external air pressure at high altitudes, and in highly dynamic driving involving a high proportion of full-load operation, e.g on race tracks Page 3.12 911 Carrera/Boxster/Cayman Engine Repair 911 Carrera (997) & Boxster/Cayman (987) Engine Oil Supply/Oil Level Measurement – 911 Carrera/S (997), Boxster/S & Cayman/S (987) Cooling – Boxster/S (987) The oil supply system as a whole has been adopted from the previous models A change applies in the area of oil level measurement Continuing with the positive experiences with electrical oil level measurement and a changeover in measuring habits away from manual measurement via the oil dipstick to electrical oil level measurement, the new engines not have an oil dipstick Due to the increase in power of the new Boxster (987) and Boxster S (987) models and the resultant higher thermal load, the cooling system had to be revised The Boxster and Boxster S with manual transmission are equipped with two radiators from the 911 Carrera (997) The hole on the crankcase for the oil dipstick is closed with a plug In order to speed up the process of measuring the oil level in certain operating states and in the interests of measuring convenience, map compensation has been introduced Previously, all of the engine oil had to return to the oil pan after the engine was shut off before the oil level could be measured To enable accurate measurement of the oil level, the necessary time required to achieve this state was ensured by means of a waiting time for oil level measurement, determined according to the oil temperature and the length of time the engine has been off With map compensation, the actual measured oil level in the oil pan is compensated to take in account the oil temperature and the length of time the engine has been off The oil that has not yet returned to the oil pan is compared with the previous system Similar to the previous Boxster (986) models, the new Boxster (987) radiators are mounted in the front fenders in front of the front wheels These radiators have been enlarged in terms of both surface area (approx %) and depth (approx 20 %) The two powerful electric fans also include a control system designed to meet the cooling requirements in conjunction with a modified exhaust air concept This ensures flow optimized control of the exhaust air flow and aerodynamic optimization of the cooling system This new feature permits infinite control of the fan speed as a function of the coolant temperature and the system pressure in the air conditioning system instead of two-stage control It has the advantages of requiring less current and therefore creates less of a load on the vehicle electrical system, in addition to quieter operation The coolant pump is identical to that used on the 911 Carrera (997) and ensures a higher coolant flow rate The more efficient operation means that the smaller oil/water heat exchanger of the Boxster (987) 2.7 liter engine can now be used on the Boxster S (987) as well, resulting in a weight reduction of 12.7 oz (360 g) The Boxster S (987) with Tiptronic S features an additional radiator at the front of the vehicle This enables cooling of the automatic transmission oil via an additional oil/water heat familiar cross-flow cooling system is also employed on the new Cayman/S, providing for the efficient and even distribution of coolant to all cylinders The coolant pump, which is identical to that on the 911 Carrera and the Boxster, ensures a high coolant flow rate Since the 911 Carrera (997) is available in two engine types and the 3.8 liter engine has a higher cooling requirement than the 3.6 liter engine, the entire cooling system has had to be revised A coolant pump with an approx 13% increase in capacity is employed to this end This increase in capacity results from an approx mm larger impeller and an enlarged coolant inlet on the crankcase This necessitated corresponding modifications of the seals The oil-water heat exchanger has been enlarged to incorporate two additional cooling fins The efficiency of the front radiators also had to be improved Aerodynamic optimization of the cooling-air guides on the 911 Carrera and Boxster has improved the performance of the cooling system adopted from these vehicles, thereby enabling this system to meet the high cooling requirements resulting from the stated power output The Cayman/S with manual transmission is equipped with two radiator modules like those of the 911 Carrera (997), located in the front fenders in front of the front wheels Two powerful electric fans also possess a control system designed to meet the cooling requirements in conjunction with an adapted exhaust air concept This ensures flowoptimized control of the exhaust air flow and aerodynamic optimization of the cooling system This new feature permits infinite control of the fan speed as a function of the coolant temperature and the refrigerant pressure in the air conditioning system It has the advantages of minimizing the required current input, thereby imposing only a minimal load on the vehicle electrical system and also generating a low level of noise On the Cayman/S with Tiptronic S, an additional third radiator is used at the front of the vehicle to facilitate cooling of the automatic transmission oil via an additional oil-water heat exchanger in the common water circuit Page 3.14 Enlarging the radiators was not an option due to lack of space A third radiator for cars with manual transmissions also was deemed unviable due to weight concerns Taking these concerns into consideration, optimizing the existing cooling concept was the best option available Fine-tuning has improved the radiator core and increased the efficiency of the supply and exhaust channels in the body In addition, variable speed control for the radiator fans has been introduced for the 911 Carrera (997) models The total of all the implemented measures resulted in a substantial improvement in cooling capacity In order to reduce the extent of
