Every morning the queen asked the mirror: ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who is the fairest of them all?’ And the mirror always replied: ‘Of all the women in the land, You are the fairest and most grand.’ The queen smiled She always liked to hear this Time passed Snow White became a beautiful young woman One day the queen asked the mirror as usual: ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who is the fairest of them all?’ And the mirror replied: ‘Now so many years have passed, Your beauty Snow White has surpassed!’ ‘What!’ cried the queen I am the most beautiful!’ She called a servant: ‘Take Snow White to the forest and kill her If you don’t kill her, you will die!’ 80 The servant took Snow White to the forest but he couldn’t kill her ‘Run and hide Snow White You must never return to the castle or the queen will kill you and me.’ Snow White was very frightened She went deeper into the forest She was soon very tired At last she saw a small house with a red door She knocked on the door but there was no answer The door was not locked, she opened it and went in There was a small table with seven plates on it and there were seven chairs round it 81 She went upstairs There were seven little beds with blankets and clean white sheets She was so tired She got into one of the beds and quickly fell asleep A few hours later, she opened her eyes and looked up Seven curious faces were looking down at her ‘Oh!’ she said ‘Who are you?’ 82 ‘We are dwarfs,’ they said ‘We live here.’ ‘I’m very sorry’, she said ‘I was so tired I fell asleep You see I’m in danger The queen wants to kill me.’ ‘Don’t worry,’ they said ‘You can stay with us.’ ‘Oh, thank you!’ said Snow White ‘I can help you I can cook, clean the house and make the beds.’ So Snow White stayed at the dwarfs’ house Every morning they went to work and every morning Snow White waved goodbye One morning the queen asked her mirror: ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who is the fairest of them all?’ And the mirror replied: ‘Safe from you, in the forest air Snow White, Oh queen, is the most fair.’ 83 So, Snow White was still alive… A few days later, there was a knock at the door ‘Who’s there?’ said Snow White She opened the door There was a poor old woman in a black dress ‘Pretty combs, pretty combs for sale,’ she said ‘Oh, they are pretty!’ said Snow White, ‘I’ll have that yellow one.’ But the woman was not a poor old woman – she was the wicked queen! And the comb was a poison comb! Snow White put the comb in her hair ‘Oh, oh! I don’t feel well!’ she cried, and she fell to the floor The dwarfs came home and found her on the floor ‘What is the matter?’ they cried They carried her to her room and took the comb out of her hair just in time! Slowly, Snow White opened her eyes again! 84 Soon the wicked queen spoke to the mirror again ‘So, she’s still alive, is she?’ said the queen The next day she went to the dwarfs’ house again This time she was dressed as the farmer’s wife She took a basket of lovely red apples with her ‘My dear,’ she said ‘Here’s a lovely red apple for you.’ But Snow White was a little afraid ‘Don’t be afraid,’ said the queen ‘Look, they are lovely apples.’ And she ate a piece of the apple Here you are And she gave the apple to Snow White Snow White ate a piece of the apple But that side of the apple had poison in it A few seconds later, she fell to the ground The dwarfs came home from work and found Snow White on the ground They thought she was dead They were so sad The animals from the forest – squirrels and birds, foxes and deer – were very sad, too Tears dropped from their eyes ‘She’s too beautiful to bury in the ground,’ the dwarfs said ‘Let’s make a glass coffin and keep her near to us,’ one of them said And they made a glass coffin and put it near the house 85 One day a prince on a white horse came to the dwarfs’ house He saw the glass coffin and stopped ‘What a beautiful young woman,’ he said ‘I can’t believe that she is dead.’ He said to the dwarfs, ‘She must go to my palace I’ll take good care of her there.’ The dwarfs were sad to say goodbye to Snow White But the next day, soldiers came to take the coffin to the palace The soldiers lifted the coffin But they were not very careful They lifted one side too quickly At the moment Snow White’s body moved and the piece of apple moved out from her mouth Suddenly she opened her eyes ‘Oooh!’ Everybody cried ‘She’s alive!’ The Prince helped Snow White to stand up The dwarfs were so happy They held hands and danced 86 As you can imagine, the prince fell in love with Snow White Soon he asked her to marry him Of course, she was sad to leave her dwarfs The big day came The prince and Snow White got married It was a wonderful day The dwarfs were happy because their princess was happy But one person was not there… That day the queen asked the mirror: ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who is the fairest of them all?’ The mirror replied: ‘You’ll see here at the prince’s side, For she is Snow White, the prince’s bride.’ The queen was very angry!
