October 2012 Apprenticeships in York Start your future today with an Apprenticeship in York By the end of this session I want you to: • • Know where to find information on Apprenticeships Recognise the huge range of Apprenticeship opportunities • See where Apprenticeships can take you • Know what support you can expect from Training Providers and Employers • 3 Know your local Training Providers October 2012 December 2016 Choices in education/training from age 14-19 44 October April 2012 2012 Apprenticeships - an Overview • It takes a year as a minimum • A mixture of on and off the job training working for an employer • Work with a mentor • May include day release to a local college • Apprentices REAL jobs for REAL employers for REAL money October 2012 Earn while you Learn • Start earning from day one of your Apprenticeship • Earn a minimum of £2.65 per hour – although many employers pay more The rates of pay are advertised with each vacancy • As your skills develop your pay could increase October 2012 What if I’m not ready to start an Apprenticeship? • Access to Apprenticeships - If you know what you want to but don’t feel ready to start a full-time work placement, you can spend some time preparing for your next stage • Foundation Learning - If you don’t know what you want to yet and perhaps need time to consider your options or improve your basic skills, then register on one of the foundation courses Both of the above options are run at various sites in the city and offer support and individual programmes to get you to the next stage For more information about these options please contact the Castlegate centre October 2012 Apprenticeship choices There are three levels of Apprenticeships available:  Intermediate Apprenticeship – this is where the majority of Apprentices will start  Advanced Apprenticeships Progressing to:  Higher Level Apprenticeships / University  Around 250 different career choices in 80 different sectors  Promotion in the workplace – leading to higher paid jobs October 2012 Apprenticeship Framework The Apprenticeship Framework is made of components: Vocational Qualification (the competence part) Technical Certificate (the background knowledge) Functional Skills (usually Maths, English and ICT) You will be subject to normal employee terms and conditions You will work a minimum of 30 hours per week and will have a minimum of 20 days holiday a year October 2012 Apprenticeship Partnership An Apprenticeship partnership is made up of: Apprentice (learner) Employer (who the learner works for) 10 Training Provider (the organisation that will support the apprentice throughout the Apprenticeship) October 2012 Imagine what you could do… Examples of what you could include: • Accountancy…leading to….Trainee Accountant • Business & Administration…leading to….Office Manager • Construction (Wood Occupations)…leading to… Joiner • Hospitality & Catering leading to Pastry Chef • Engineering…leading to… Mechanical Engineering Technician • Health & Social Care leading to Community Outreach Worker • Rail Transport Engineering…leading to.… Rail Engineering Technician • Retail leading to Purchasing Manager 15 October 2012 What are Employers Looking for?
