Situation: You are at a party when a friend offers to take you home Politely refuse his/her offer and tell him/her how you are getting home Possible answer: Thank you, that’s very kind of you, but I’ve already ordered a taxi/my car is just outside, Situation: Just as you are leaving a restaurant, someone tells you that you’ve taken the wrong coat Apologise and explain your mistake Possible answer: Oh, I’m terribly sorry, I didn’t realize, it’s the same colour as mine Situation: You are staying with some English friends and they ask you what you would like for breakfast Say what you would like and tell them what you usually have at home Possible answer: Could I have a real English breakfast, I’ve heard so much about it?/Just toast and coffee please At home I usually have ……… Situation: A friend asks you to look after his/her cat while he/she is on holiday Say you can’t and tell him/her why Possible answer: Oh, I’m terribly sorry, I can’t because I’m allergic to cats/I’m going away at the same time Situation: You’re swimming in the sea with an English friend who wants and ewx to swim out farther Say you don’t want to and explain why Possible answer: I’d rather not because I’m not such a good swimmer as you/I’m tired Situation: An English friend uses a word you don’t understand Tell him and ask him to explain Possible answer: Sorry, what did you say? Is there anything I can for you? Situation: You are at a party and someone offers you an alcoholic drink Refuse politely and say why Possible answer: No, thank you I’m driving so I’ll stick to fruit juice this evening/I never drink alcohol Situation: A friend of yours phones to say she’s given birth to a baby girl What you say? Possible answer: Congratulations! What’s her name?/What’s she like?/Did everything go well? Situation: In a train you help an old man with his luggage He sits down next to you and thanks you Give a reply and start a conversation with him Possible answer: Don’t mention it/Not at all/ Where are you going? Situation: Someone asks you how long you have been living in your present home and whether you are happy there What you say? Possible answer: I’ve been living here for ……… years/since … (date) and I love it Situation: You are staying at the Park Hotel in Birmingham One evening you can’t find your way back to the hotel Ask a person in the street for help Possible answer: Excuse me, I think I’m lost Could you tell me the way to the Park Hotel, please? Situation: You hear that an English friend has failed his driving test Say how disappointed you are and give him some advice Possible answer: Don’t worry, try again in a few weeks, I’m sure you’ll pass it then [...]...Situation: You’ve taken a taxi to the station and the taxi-driver asks you for 30€, but you know it should only be about 20 € Complain and threaten not to pay Possible answer: What! 30€ that’s impossible!
