Methodology Participants of the study Instrument Procedure for conducting the questionnaire survey Procedure for conducting the class observation Procedure for conducting the interview Data analysis procedure The participants of the study are class 10ENGLISH1, 10ENGLISH2, 10A1 AND 10A2 at High School for Gifted Students questionnaires Instrument interview class observation Everything observed, heard, and experienced during class observation was carefully noted in detail in the following observation sheet Time Content Warm-up Pre-speaking While-speaking Post-speaking Homework Teacher’s activities Student’s activities Procedure for conducting the questionnaire survey fifteen minutes before the classes began teach er of Englis h twenty- minute break at the staff room Questionnaires 90 minutes Five weeks after the Classroom observation sheet questionnaire survey had been administered Procedure for conducting the class observation in each class recorded and assessed participation of 10 random students the interview was then ary u n a J f o h t 2 Procedure for conducting the interview Result Questionnaire results Observation results Interview results Questionnaire result What are some factors that affect their speaking skill? What are some problems that students in 10 English in Hanoi National University of Education – high school for gifted students have to encounter in learning speaking skill? Observation results: (1) There are no speaking lessons which are separated from other lessons (2) The students were not given enough time to prepare for a speaking task before the task was performed and to perform their task (3) When the students were asked to work in groups, not all of them were participated and they often worked individually to complete the task (4) They tended to use (5) While the students were Vietnamese when they making performances, the other discussed in groups and often students in class did not listen go off topic or chatting attentively (6) Some student talked very well in a small group, but they still looked very nervous when they spoke in front of the class (7) They focused too much on the grammar and could not talk naturally (8) They often used note whenever they present (9) Whenever the students made mistakes, the teacher stopped them and corrected the mistakes 10) The students had to a lot of things in a (11) The students were given too little time on forty-five minute period listening sessions • • • • • (5)The students talked with too much interruption and spoke unnaturally (6)There were many off topic sentences (7) The intonation and the pronunciation were sometimes incorrect (3) Lacking of confidence was one of the easiest noticeable problems (4) The vocabulary of students was limited, and sometimes the students used inappropriate words results: Interview Discussion of findings What are some factors affect speaking ability of the students at class 10ENGLISH1?
