“Future Tenses” Conversation Lesson Plan (50 min) Mix Level High School BOYS / Class size: 36 Warm up (10 min) Teacher has written on the board: What are you doing next weekend?” Underneath write “I’m going to ” and “I’m _ing” and “I don’t” know I think I’ll _.” -Greet a student and then work your way into the question For lower level students I always point to the question when I say it and then point to the form I want him to answer in if the student makes a mistake Then that student does the same with another student and so on I have them throw around a ball to choose the next student This basically keeps them on their toes and listening because they know a ball might come flying at them Encourage students to use contractions and pronounce “going to” as “gonna.” Music Video Activity (Engage) (10 min) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0 -Ask Students if they like the song and music video “Gangnam Style.” Ask them how many times they have seen the video Tell them that we are having a Gangnam Style quiz today Tell them we will watch the video and you will stop it and ask them questions I usually write the answers on the board out of order using the target language I want them to use: ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS IN ORDER -He’s going to walk into trash -There’s going to be an explosion -He’s going to look at her butt -He’s going to be in the elevator -He’s going to dance with the cute girl -He’s going to dance at a club - When you pause the video ask them “What will he next” or “What’s he going to next” or “What’s going to happen next.” Pause the video at 00:31, 1:04, 1:36, 1:50, 2:29, and 3:01 Practice, Study, and Activate (20 min) -With 36 students I usually divide the class in half -The first half of the class does the questions worksheet with a partner (Change these questions to fit your specific class and their interests and level) It is important that one of the teachers is there to help them and make sure they are talking and staying on task (not merely writing down the answers or playing around) Explain to the students that it is important that they ask their own follow up questions and really try to talk about each topic Advanced students are encouraged to ask different questions and engage in deeper conversation -The other half of the class is given the laminated cut out cards Each student gets only one – either a question or an answer Then they all stand up and walk around their half of the class and find their partner It is important that they talk during this, repeating their card and listening for the right response This may seem silly but it really helps the low level students to practice in a controlled way It is also really good listening practice When they have a match, they should come to the teacher and say it out loud for the teacher to check -When the students finish their task they should then the other task, so by the end both groups of students have done the worksheet and the activity Check for understanding (10 min) I usually ask a few students some of the questions form the worksheet and have them answer me I always ask follow up questions also Then prompt a student to stand up and ask another student one of the questions as well as one follow up question Keep this going till the end of class Ask your partner the questions You must ask one more follow up question (hint: box) They must answer the question with a complete sentence Write down their answers Do you think PSY will make another hit song as good as “Gangnam Style?” How long you think “Gangnam Style” will be popular? -I think it’ll be popular for Are you going to see a PSY concert this year? Is the world going to listen to more Korean music now that they have heard “Gangnam Style?” What are you doing next weekend? What are you going to for Chuseok this year?
