How good a witness would YOU be? You are walking along the street when a thief runs from a jeweller's shop and jumps into a waiting car, which is driven quickly away Later, the police call you as a witness and you are asked to describe what you saw Take a good look at the picture; then see how many questions you can answer correctly Questions: What time was it? How was the thief dressed? About how tall was he? Did he have any unusual features? Did he seem to have an injury? If so, how was it caused? What did he use to break the window? What was the thief carrying? What kind of car was waiting for him? Was he going to drive the car himself? 10 In which direction was the car facing? 11 Who else was on the street at the time of the theft? 12 Were any of the onlookers acting suspiciously? Answer Key: The time was one o'clock by the jeweller's clock, The thief was dressed in a suit, black leather shoes and a hat His coat collar was turned up He was very tall (six feet / 1.83 metres or more) Compare his height with the letter box on the footpath Yes, he had a deep scar on his left cheek The handkerchief wound round his right hand suggests that he cut himself while breaking the window On the footpath, near the broken glass, was a heavy monkey wrench This was probably used to break the shop window He was carrying a brown leather bag in his left hand The waiting car was a red, open sports car without a number plate No, a driver was waiting in the car 10 The car was facing south This is shown by the weather vane on the church spire 11 As well as the thief and his driver, there was a third man on the footpath nearby 12 The man on the footpath was acting suspiciously: he was not looking at the robbery taking place only a few feet away from him, but in the opposite direction He seemed to be keeping a lookout for the police
