this story interesting for several reasons It is a strange story but it is an interesting one Besides the unusual terms and events that take place, it reveals to a great extent some important traits in the characters of Antonio, Shylock and Bassanio We learn that Bassanio is a spendthrift He has spent all his money Now, he wants another loan He is advised by Antonio to approach some wealthy merchant in Venice for the loan He is ready to stand surety for him Antonio himself has no money with him at the moment It is because all his fortunes are in the ships which are on the high seas Bassanio approaches Shylock He wants a loan of 3000 ducats from him With this money he wants to go to Belmont to woo the beautiful lady, Portia Antonio too reaches Shylock’s house Shylock at first shows hesitation in lending money to Bassanio on the surety of Antonio It is because often Antonio has insulted him in the market place He has even spoken against his race Shylock complains that Antonio lends money free of interest Thus, his business of money-lending is made to suffer It is because his customers go away to Antonio Antonio tells Shylock that while preparing the bond, Shylock should take it as a matter of business He need not take it in any friendly terms So, he is free to lay any harsh conditions for the bond Shylock says that he wants friendship of Antonio and all Christians more than anything else He lays the condition that if Antonio is unable to return the loan within three months of signing the bond, Shylock could cut a pound of flesh from his chest near the heart Antonio is ready to sign this bond Bassanio warns him against signing it However, Antonio believes that within three months his ships would return and he would be able to return the loan Actually, Shylock bears a deep grudge against Antonio in his heart He wants to take his revenge against him He finds this occasion a fit opportunity for that He believes that Antonio’s ships have to face several dangers and difficulties on the sea and they might not return in time Then, he would be able to execute the terms of the bond against Antonio Shylock tells Antonio that actually he could give Antonio a loan of 3000 ducats without any interest, as he wants his friendship But he wants him to sign the bond just in merry sport Antonio is taken in his words and he signs the bond Here, we learn about the crafty nature of Shylock We also learn how indifferent to life and its dangers Antonio is Bassanio’s warning to Antonio shows that he has a high regard for Antonio’s friendship and his life and safety Thus, he is not fair-weather friend Advantages Adverbs Advocates Affixtures Aggressions Actress Czarina Vicereine Queen Tigress Aerated Aestivated Affected Affirmed Affixed Afflicted
