Về nghĩa, những chữ này thường thay thế được cho nhau. Chữ Kind là thông dụng nhất, Sort dùng nhiều hơn trong văn nói, trong khi Type thấy nhiều hơn trong văn viết. “Kind of” dùng để chỉ một nhóm có tính chất tương tự nhau hoặc chỉ một loại xác định. Ví dụ: Todays vehicles use two kind of fuel petrol and diesel. Còn “type of” dùng để chỉ sự đa dạng của một thứ. Ví dụ: type of car, type of bread.... “Sort of” chỉ một nhóm có cùng tính chất với nhau. Ví dụ: We both like the same sort of music. Kind of, sort of, type of thường có “this” hoặc “that” đứng trước và danh từ số ít theo sau. Ví dụ: His teacher does not tolerate this kind of mistake. She is the sort of woman who always gets what she wants. What type of car do you drive? Kinds of, sorts of, types of đi với “these” hoặc “those”. Ví dụ: My teacher does not tolerate these kinds of mistakes. I hate those sorts of people who only care about money.
