the strategic events and thank the extraordinary people who brought me to this point on my path This book was originally published in 1987 by publisher Al Saunders at Newcastle Press When I began writing it in 1985, I was still a practicing architect and bookstore owner The mid-80’s was a difficult time in Houston, with the double impact of a crumbling oildominated economy depriving many people of their livelihood, and the ravages of AIDS depriving many of their lives My days, which had been occupied with business, working toward a vague something in the future, opened to the immediacy of the problems and pain in my community Ironically, my long-time fascination with eastern philosophy, in particular Zen Buddhism and Taoism, moved from the intellectual realm into the hard pragmatism of everyday life I had been reading Tarot cards for myself and those close to me since moving to Houston from Brussels, Belgium in 1972 With the recession and my architecture practice dead in the water, I was spending more time in the bookstore and customers began asking me questions about the books I was selling To my surprise and pleasure, I found myself able to answer many of those questions And, to even greater surprise, many people asked me to read the Tarot for them In the fall of 1985 I accepted an invitation to Tarot readings at the Renaissance Festival in Magnolia, Texas The intensity of that six-week event became a crucible in which I received countless revelations about the origin and meaning of the Tarot In reading after reading, layer after layer of new insights came to me One of those insights was that the exchange of knowledge between the reader and the querent/readee is always equal The reader also learns in every reading So my first thanks must go to the people I read for on those cold weekends in Magnolia Thankfully, this book is now moving into its third edition Rarely is an author given the opportunity to clarify, much less add to, his original intentions I was blessed with Kelly Younger as editor of the first edition She was the perfect balance of nurturing and discipline that this overly sensitive, neophyte writer desperately needed I will Sheet 358 Foreword Foreword I am deeply moved and gratified by Bill Lammey’s work on Tarot It is a comprehensive synthesis of Tarot symbolism with certain fundamental philosophies in the areas of human consciousness research and transpersonal psychology As a student and teacher of transpersonal psychology, the Tarot has been especially significant to me, both personally and professionally, during my own journey into the depths of the Self Tarot is the metaphysical system that has given me the key to understanding and transcribing portions of “the mystery of the Self” in my work I honor its wisdom, its humor, and its incredible accuracy But the Tarot requires an interpreter who is highly trained in the intuition and integrity of The Higher Self for its wisdom to fully materialize I did not know this at the time, but what I had done was to find a way to connect with my essence through the symbolic energies of these powerful cards Then, one day when I was in my teens, a cousin of a friend of mine was visiting and informed me quite dramatically that the Tarot was “evil.” I was shocked! classical Tarot decks is such that there are two groups; referred to as Arcana One is called the Major Arcana; the other the Minor Arcana Arcana means “secrets.” Card: Any of the 78 drawings/illustrations that comprise a classical Tarot deck These are rectangular in most decks, but may also be other shapes, such as square or round Chakra: Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel.” Used in Yoga disciplines, notably in reference to the Kundalini (the vital force lying dormant at the base of the spine until activated), and in the study of metaphysics and esoteric philosophy, to signify the principal centers or vortexes of spiritual energy along the body from an area near the base of the spine to the top of the head Karmic Tarot refers to these seven chakras: Root (base of the spine, Adrenal); Genital (over the sex organs, Spleen); Solar Plexus (over the navel, Pancreas); Heart (over the heart, Thymus); Throat (front of the throat, Thyroid); Third Eye masculine side of the Divine, the all-powerful, all-capable, the judgmental God At its extreme, it represents the infinitely large in the universe Hierarchy: The concept in many schools of metaphysical thought that there is a group of advanced souls guiding man’s progress on the incarnate plane, such guidance having required incarnating themselves from time to time The Christian concept of archangels is similar Hooks: Author’s term for the conventions, spreads/layouts, and card interpretations that every reader develops over time Once a reader has established regular practices, they become the personal rules of grammar in their language of the Tarot, a grammar for the reader’s personal dialect that can be used by God to deliver specific meanings/messages in any given reading Karma: The belief system which allows that the experiences of this lifetime, the lessons to be learned, are chosen in the context of and with the soul’s knowledge of all prior incarnations Karma is another word for our chosen path in toto The popular notion of karma as punishment carried over to the present lifetime for wrongdoing in past lifetimes is incorrectly presented The soul, from its overview, knows what it must to advance efficiently along its path and will chose the work it needs to To the soul, no task or life position is worse or better than any other Karmic Contract: The first four cards in the Karmic Spread constitute the Karmic Contract, representing the readee’s situation at birth They show the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of the work chosen for the present lifetime that are most applicable for the given reading Karmic Spread: The spread that accommodates a layout of 22 cards and which uses the information generated by the karma at work and visible in the structure of the Tarot itself, in particular the way in which the two Arcana interface graphically to reveal a four-fold aspect of the self moving through the seven stages of evolutionary growth in consciousness Karmic Tarot: The Tarot convention that uses a layout of 22 cards selected in each reading from a 78 card classical Tarot deck and distributed over the spread pattern known as the Karmic Spread Layout: The distribution of cards in a designated pattern for a given reading using a predetermined spread convention Each distribution of the cards is a layout Major Arcana: The group of 22 cards, numbered from to 21, whose illustrations and meanings represent the archetypal lessons that the human race must experience and internalize The author also refers
