Extreme skiing is not the sport for those unskilled and fainthearted. According to Chris Landry “If you fall, you die.” This unconventional and relatively new sport involves skiing down mountains which are steeper than ordinary skiing slopes. The pitch of an average ski slope, even on the expert runs, is no more than 20-30 degrees. Extreme skiers, on the other hand, go down slopes pitched at about 50-60 degrees, so that on the steepest runs, the skiers’ elbows graze the snow on the uphill side. As one skier describes it, "Extreme skiing is something like skiing down the side of a building." Since there are no handy skiing lifts to take extreme skiers to the top of the mountains, they must depend upon their mountain-climbing skills to get to the position for their daring downhill runs. Often the preparatory climb is the most dangerous part of the trip- some skiers have lost their lives on the way up the mountains. Extreme skiing demands the utmost skilled and controlled skills. One mistake can be fatal- it is all or nothing to the extreme skiers. They must be prepared to hurl themselves off the cliffs which sharply drop away. It is psychologically very difficult to drop those first few frightening yards. The extreme skiers must be alert and be able to cope with the unknown hazards which certainly lie ahead. One danger is the possibility of an avalanche. On warm and sunny days, the sun can soften the snow, causing it to break off in slabs, setting off an avalanche. In spite of the obvious dangers, extreme skiing still attracts a few brave people who accept challenges and thrills. American extreme skier Chris Landry, who made his landmark descent for personal satisfaction, does not see extreme skiing as an aggressive or competitive sport. For him, extreme skiing is not “conquering” the mountain, it is “becoming one” with it. 51. Extreme skiing is………………………….?
