DESIGNING AN INTERVIEW CHECKLIST Step 1: Clarify objectives. Be clear about the objectives of the interview. For example , if you are conducting an oral history , what are the important aspects of the person’s life you want to cover? Step 2: Overall structure. Once you have your objectives clear, no down each of the major issues that you would like to discuss. Think of each of these issues as a separate area for questioning and decide on some specific questions you would like answered for each issue. These issues and specific questions now for the overall structure of your checklist. Step 3: Specific structure. Think of each issue as consisting of three separate questioning stages: - Introductory questions are usually easy to answer and provide specific information about the person , topic, or issue - Broad-based questions allow the respondent to talk more freely and openly about the issues. - Follow -up questions are designed to pick up on particular issues. It is useful to prepare some follow-up questions in advance just in case you need them . When the issue is completed to your satisfaction , you might then start these three –stage process with the next issue or topic. Step 4: Closure. - Before completing the interview ensure that you have all the information you require. At this stage you can ask your respondent if there is anything he or she would like to add . Step 5: Pilot study. - Even well designed checklists don’t always work the first time. It is always good practice to pilot any form of questionnaire. .
