LESSON PLAN Unit 12: The Asian Games Period 2: Speaking Time allotted: 45 minutes Class: 11B1 Date: Tuesday, March 8 th , 2011. Supervisor: Tống Nữ Kiều Thu Student: Hoàng Thị Hoài Giang I. Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: + ask and give information about some types of sports in The Asian Games. + express their own ideas about sport results and about their favorite games or athletes. + use useful language to talk about the Asian Games + know how to work in groups, pairs. II. Teaching aids: textbook, handouts, posters. III. Anticipated problems: students may not have enough vocabulary to talk about the topic, so teacher should be ready to provide help. IV. Procedure: Stages/ times Activities Work arrangement I. Warm- up ( 5 minutes) Games: Matching - T divides the class into 2 groups (Group A and Group B); each group chooses a group leader. - T sticks 6 flags and 6 names of countries on the board. - T gives some instructions: “There are 6 flags and 6 names of countries. Match the flags with the correct countries. When you finish, your group leader will write your answers on the board. The group that has all correct answers in the shortest time will be the winner.” - T uses the technique: STEP- BY STEP to check the instructions. Group work - T lets students finish the game in 3 minutes. - T checks; gives comments and feedback (see Appendix A) 1.F 2. D 3. A 4.B 5.E 6. C Lead- in (1 minute) India, the first country. held the 1 st Asian Games. And today you are going to practising asking and answering questions about the Asian Games. Unit 12: The Asian Games Speaking Whole class II. Pre- speaking ( 8 minutes) * Useful language: Useful language Techniques bodybuilding (n) picture, explanation billiards (n) picture, explanation shooting (n) picture, explanation medal => gold medal, silver medal, bronze medal picture, explanation karatedo (n) picture, explanation * Step of presenting useful language: + T reads the new word out clearly. + T elicits the new word. + T models it 2 times. + T lets students repeat it in chorus 2 times. + T lets students repeat it individually 2 times. + T writes the new word on the board. + T checks the new word: T (Vietnamese meaning) - SS (English word). + T asks students to copy the new words in the notebook. Whole class, individual work III. While- speaking ( 16 minutes). Activity 1: Substitution preparation: 3 minutes presentation: 5 minutes (3 pairs) - T gives some instructions: “Work in pairs. Use the information in your handout to substitute the underlined information in following sample dialogue. Practise the dialogue in 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, I will call on some pairs to present your dialogue in front of class”. Pair work - T uses the technique STEP- BY- STEP to check the instructions. B: Eleven (4) A: How many sports were there at the Games? B: Six (5) - T delivers the handouts. Activity 2: Table completion preparation: 3 minutes presentation: 5 minutes (3 students) - T gives some instructions: “Work in pairs. Use the information in your handout. Take turns to talk about the sport results of Vietnamese athletes at 14th Asian Games held in Busan, Korea in 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, I will call on some students to present your dialogue in front of class”. - T uses the technique STEP- BY- STEP to check the instructions. - T delivers the handouts. In billiards, - T lets students practice in 5 minutes. - T goes around and gives help if necessary. - T calls some pairs to perform in front of the class. - T gives comments. IV. Post- speaking (10 mins) Activity 3: Group Discussion preparation: 5 minutes presentation: 5 minutes (5 students) - T gives some instructions: “Work in groups. Decide the group leader and the secretary of each group. Talk about an athlete they like most among following 4 athletes in 5 minutes. After discussing, the group leader will report their group members’ ideas in front of class in 1 minute”. - T uses the technique: STEP- BY- STEP to check the instructions. - T gives an example to students: In my group, Thanh likes Nguyen Thi My Duc most. She had a bronze medal in Wushu at the 14 th Asian Games in Busan, Korea. And - T shows 4 pictures with following information on the board (see APPENDIX C) - T lets students work in 5 minutes. - T goes around the classroom to help if necessary. - T asks some group leaders to present their group members’ ideas in front of class. - T gives comments. Pair work, individual work V. Home- Homework: Whole class work and Evaluation (5 mins) - T asks students to do the following exercise in their notebooks. + Write the report they did in activity 3. Ex: In my group, Thanh likes Nguyen Thi My Duc most. She had a bronze medal in Wushu at the 14 th Asian Games in Busan, Korea. And Evaluation: - T asks students to give their ideas/ feeling of the class and the teacher’s teaching method. - T gives comments on students’ learning attitude during the class.
