The aim of the lesson Teacher ( T ) helps students ( Ss): • Distinguish the sounds /ei/, /ai/ and /ɔi/. • Review the present perfect tense. • Use Because of and In spite of appropriately. 2. Objectives By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: • Pronounce the sounds /ei/, /ai/ and /ɔi/ clearly and correctly • Master the use of the present perfect tense • Use Because of and In spite of appropriately 3. Skills - Reading - Speaking - Writing - Listening - Work in pair or groups 4. Teaching method - Practising in pairs or groups - Guiding, explaining 5. Teaching aids - Textbook, chalk, board,papers, etc. 6. Procedure Step/Time Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities 1. Warm- up (10 mins) * Greeting - T introduces Mrs.Thuy. - T introduces about herself. - T gives out 9 words. Enjoy day noise Style fly toy Place paper time Listen I. Pronunci- ation ( 9 mins) - T introduces 3 sounds: /ei/, /ai/ and /ɔ i/ + /ei/ has two sounds: e and i. First make the sound e, make it longer eee. Then add the sound i. This is very short. Ex: say /ei/ + /ai/ has two sounds: a and i. First make the sound a. Make it longer aaa. Then add the sound i. This is very short. Ex: wife /ai/ + / ɔ i/ has two sounds: ɔ and i. First make the sound ɔ. Make it longer ɔɔɔ. Then add the sound i. This is very short. Ex: boy / i/ - T asks Ss to work groups to choose, discuss and answer words which have underlined parts pronounced /ei/, /ai/ or /ɔ i/ and put into the column of the sounds /ei/, /ai/ or /ɔ i/ -T goes around the class and gives help if necessary. - After 3 minutes, T has some Ss read out their answers in front of the class. - T checks and gives correct answers. - Teacher’s suggested answers: Suggested answers: /ei/ /ai/ /ɔi/ Day style enjoy Place fly toy Paper time noise - T introduces the lesson. - T aks Ss to review the sounds /ei/, /ai/ and /ɔi/ by pronouncing them clearly and slowly if necessary. The present perfect tense - T asks Ss to review the form and usage of the Present perfect tense. - T writes some examples on blackboard and asks Ss to underline the form of the Present perfect tense. E.g. 1). He has gone for an hour. 2). She has learnt English for 5 years. - Form: - Usage: /ai/ - / ɔ i/ has two sounds: ɔ and i. First make the sound ɔ. Make it longer ɔɔɔ. Then add the sound i. This ia very short. Ex: boy / i/ Listen Repeat Work in pairs and practise Read the sentences Answer the form and usage of the Present perfect tense. Form: - Usage: . The Present Perfect Tense talks about an action which started in the past and continuous up to now. . The Present Perfect Tense to talk about a past action that has the result in the present. . The present perfect is often used S + has/have + V PII S + has/have + V PII III. Exercises ( 10 mins) • The Present Perfect Tense talks about an action which started in the past and continuous up to now. Ex: I have been a teacher for more than ten years. • The Present Perfect Tense to talk about a past action that has the result in the present. Ex: Jimmy has gone to Ha Noi. = He isn't here now. + The present perfect is often used with the word just, for, since and ago. # “Just” talks about actions that have taken place very recently. Ex: You cannot meet Mrs Jones. She has just left # “For” talks about the duration of a period of time Ex: I have been with my department for three years. # “Since” talks about when a period started. Ex: I have been in Internet technologies since 1992. 2. “Because of” and “In spite of” T gives the form, the meaning and the use of “Because of and In spite of” for Ss. Form: 1/. Because of + N/ N.P/gerund, Clause(S+V+O) Ex: Lan was worried because of the rain. We are late because of getting up late. We arrived late because there is a traffic jam. 2/.In spite of + N/ N.P/ gerund, Clause(S+V+O) Ex: We went out in spite of the rain. He went on working in spite of feeling unwell. Marry was still happy in spite of her job was busy. Usage: * “Because of” is used to show the cause. “In spite of” is used to show the concession. 2. Grammar Exercise1: Complete the letter, using the present perfect of the verbs in the box. - T guides Sts to do the exercise. - T asks Ss to read the letter and then complete the letter by using the Present perfect tense of the verbs in the box. with the word just, for, since and ago. # “Just” talks about actions that have taken place very recently. Ex: You cannot meet Mrs Jones. She has just left # “For” talks about the duration of a period of time Ex: I have been with my department for three years. # “Since” talks about when a period started. Ex: I have been in Internet technologies since 1992. E.g: I have lived here since 2005. I have lived here for 3 years. - After that, T asks sts to read clearly their answers. Exercise 3: Complete the sentences, using the information in the box. - T guides the exercise. - T asks sts to complete the following sentences, using the information in the box (page 81) in 5 mins. - T asks sts to read their answers. - T check s and gives correct answers. 1. Because of the cold weather, we kept the fire burning all day. In spite of the cold weather, we all wore shorts. 2. Because of his illness, he had to cancel the appointment. In spite of his illness, he managed to come to school. 3. Because of the large crowds, we could not see what was going on. Do the exercise Read the answers 1.
