Learning Management Vendors, November 2011 Corporate LMSs By Don McIntosh www.trimeritus.com 28 Notes: Google and other search engines are arguably the greatest informal research and learning tools that we have. Almost everyone involved in the knowledge industries, teachers, students and many others consult them daily. In 2008, Google launched Google Code University http://code.google.com/edu/ with sample course content and tutorials for Computer Science (CS) students and educators on current computing technologies and paradigms. It is an open source based system with a Creative Commons license. Social networking sites like Myspace, Facebook, YouTube (owned by Google), Delicious, Twitter, Wikipedia and many others are enjoying huge popularity. In 2010, Facebook first had more hits than Google. More learning probably occurs using these tools than with all the formal tools listed here. Many LMS vendors are adding social networking and informal learning tools to their products. Some organizations modify web content management systems to work as LMSs. Web content management systems are used to maintain complex web sites. They include Microsoft Sharepoint, Drupal, Sitecore, OpenText, etc. For example, in 2011 the American College of Cardiology launched a learning management system (LMS) built with Sitecore's Web Content Management System (CMS) software by Velir Studios. SumTotal Systems resulted from a merger between Click2Learn and Docent. They have since purchased Pathlore and DK Systems. In June, 2009, SumTotal Systems was acquired by Vista Equity Partners. In 2010, SumTotal purchased SoftScape and on January 5, 2011, they purchased GeoLearning. In July 2011, they purchased CyberShift Inc. and Accero Inc. signifying a further expansion into Talent/Human Resources Management. In Oct, 2006, Skillsoft purchased NETg. In Feb. 2008 Skillsoft partnered with SumTotal Systems and EEDO to offer interoperability. Skillsoft purchased ElementK in 2011 making it by far the largest supplier of online generic courseware. SilkRoad technology inc. purchased VTN Technologies in Nov. 2008. Skillsoft offers the Skillport LMS and ElementK offers KnowledgeHub LMS primarily to support their own extensive eLearning courseware catalogs. They do not support classroom training management. Brandon Hall Group (www.brandon-hall.com) and Bersin & Associates (http://www.bersin.com) have produced reports profiling these systems. More LMSs are listed at the following web sites  http://www.e-learningcentre.co.uk/. (This is a British site so the list tends to be Eurocentric),  http://www.c4lpt.co.uk/Directory/Tools/instructional.html. Also check http://www.c4lpt.co.uk/recommended/top100-2010.html.  http://www.capterra.com/learning-management-system-software,  http://www.elearningguild.com/buyers_guide/?selection=doc.937. An extensive list of both products and services which goes beyond the scope of this list. WebCT and Blackboard (now merged) are listed as LMSs. They are primarily focused Learning Management Vendors, November 2011 Corporate LMSs By Don McIntosh www.trimeritus.com 29 on the formal education sector so I have also listed them as Education LMS (also called Course Management Systems - CMSs). Blackboard also purchased Angel Learning in May, 2009. The Vista version of WebCT is being phased out by Blackboard in 2013 and replaced with Blackboard Learn. Rapid Learning Management Systems There is a new breed of systems hosted on the web and readily available to everyone which Tony Karrer calls Rapid Learning Management Systems (http://elearningtech.blogspot.com/2009/10/rapid-learning-management-systems.html). They give access to individuals and groups of learners access to online learning and provide some management tools. Learning Management Vendors, November 2011 Corporate LMSs By Don McIntosh www.trimeritus.com 30  Vidizmo Ultralearn http://vidizmo.ultralearn.com/. A software-as-a-service application for interactive rich-media-mashup based learning with an emphasis on video and with some tracking, management and evaluation features.  Wisetail Learning Ecosystem (Wisetail) http://www.wisetail.com/. Described as “The next generation LMS.” It is an eLearning system where employees complete and/or contribute video training content, and interact with one another socially It also includes LMS features like a content management system, course delivery with learning paths, test creation tools, SCORM compatibility, reporting and user management, etc.  Xerceo Feathercap (Xerceo, Inc.) http://www.xerceo.com and http://www.feathercap.net/. Online. Free for individuals.  it's learning (it's learning Inc,) http://www.itslearning.net. For K-12 and post- secondary education.  Time To Know Digital Learning Platform (Time To Know, Inc.) http://www.timetoknow.com/. Described as “…an interactive core curriculum and a digital teaching platform, designed specifically for one-to-one computing classrooms. It is currently available for fourth and fifth grade math and reading/language arts.” It is natural that with the increased popularity of SaaS, cloud computing, and social networking the LMS would evolve to include those things. Many “behind the firewall” LMSs are including social networking tools within the organization because many employers are reluctant to give employees access to Facebook, Twitter, etc. out of fear that they will waste time on them. Some of these tools give access to outside the enterprise social networking but with a learning focus. Perhaps we can call these open access, training marketplaces and communities or Learning Management Vendors, November 2011 Corporate LMSs By Don McIntosh www.trimeritus.com 31 learning management networks (CoursePark's term). Craig Weiss offers a very useful blog on E-Learning. He calls it E-Learnning 24/7 and it can be found at http://elearninfo.com/. Learning Management Vendors, November 2011 Corporate LCMSs By Don McIntosh www.trimeritus.com 32 Learning Content Management Systems (LCMSs) While LMSs manage learners and record keeping, LCMSs manage the content of courses. Typically, course content is stored as learning objects in a learning object repository database. The objects are described and tagged so these objects can be recalled and reused by the same course designers and others. Because many LMSs are taking on the features of LCMSs and vice-versa, there is a duplication of vendors on this list with the previous list. Some companies which offer both make a distinction between them and name them separately; some don’t. Most LCMSs offer course authoring capability and many offer at least modest LMS capability as well. Some education oriented systems call themselves LCMSs. Because their primary function is the creation and delivery of content, this is quite understandable. I prefer to call them education LMSs and have them in a separate category. They are also known as Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) and as Course Management Systems (but this can be confused with content management systems (CMS). The term CMS (Content Management System) is usually used to refer to a system to manage content on a website. LCMSs are specialized CMSs which are specifically designed to manage learning content. 1. Blackboard Learn (Blackboard, Inc.) http://www.blackboard.com Primarily an education oriented system, a version of this platform is offered as a corporate solution as well. In 2005, they purchased WebCT which makes them the largest commercial education LMS. The Vista version of WebCT is being phased out by Blackboard in 2013 and replaced with Blackboard Learn. Blackboard also purchased Angel Learning in May, 2009 shrinking the educational LMS marketplace even further. Blackboard purchased Elluminate and Wimba (virtual classroom tools) in July 2010 and has integrated them into a new product called Collaborate. Blackboard also purchased iStrategy (http://www.istrategy.com) in 2010 and incorporated it into Blackboard Analytics suggesting a move into broader school administration. Blackboard itself was purchased by Providence Equity Partners in June, 2011. 5. BreakthroughPerformanceTech LCMX (Breakthrough Performance Tech) http://www.breakthroughperformancetech.com/.
